Equality in Education: Progress, Problems and Possibilities
This brief highlights findings from Educational Equality: 1966 and Now by Marshall S. Smith and Jennifer O⟚y, which observes that there is evidence of considerable progress toward the goal of equality of educational outcomes; gaps in achievement between African American and white students, and to a lesser extent between income groups, have been substantially reduced
The Intersection of Writing Process Pedagogy and Prolepsis: A Phenomenological Case Study of Secondary Writing Instruction
The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the lived experiences and essences of secondary high school students and participating teachers in a three-week summer journalism camp sponsored by the National Writing Project and funded by the MacArthur T. Foundation. This study employs Moustakas\u27 (1994) modification of the van Kaam method for phenomenological data analysis in order to reveal the intersection of writing process pedagogy and prolepsis, a writing framework I developed. Data sources included pre-and-post writing samples, semi-structured interviews, field notes and student writing artifacts which were collected between May 27, 2019 and June 14, 2019. Data were analyzed in order to examine how students’ attitudes and beliefs about writing and their own writer identity shifted and changed throughout the camp as they experienced the learning activities crafted for them.
Analysis resulted in the identification of three essential themes: (1) curating a supportive learning environment through purposeful pedagogy is crucial for helping to shape students’ beliefs about writing; this happens through co-construction of knowledge and experiencing a sociocultural space; (2) reflection is vital for learning; and (3) prolepsis can be an effective mediational tool for developing student writers because it fosters a writing process pedagogy that gives student agency and choice. These results provide supporting evidence for the argument that writing instruction is inherently sociocultural, in that a co-construction of knowledge between teachers and students, a focus on fostering and sustaining a community of practice and a curation of learning activities to develop students’ writing skills are the necessary mediative tools for instruction
The effectiveness of teacher involvement in the design of a writing curriculum
A South Texas school district, PSJA ISD was studied to demonstrate whether classroom teachers can collaborate and create an effective curriculum and resources for the students of the district. The paper will include data from the STAAR Test that has been released during 2011-2015, interviews of teachers that were part of the curriculum team, and data from the United States Census Bureau to understand the demographics of the region. Data that is included will compare the State of Texas to the district before the teacher-created curriculum was in place and after the teacher-created curriculum was implemented
Putting the Pieces Together: Systems for School Reform
This brief summarizes Systemic School Reform by Marshal S. Smith and Jennifer O⟚y, which appears in full in The Politics of Curriculum and Testing, edited by Susan Fuhrman and Betty Malen (Falmer 1991).
Systemic School Reform is an analytic essay which draws on research conducted by CPRE and others about the effectiveness of current education policies. The author also looked at developing policy systems in a number of states. Smith and O⟚y propose a design for a systemic state structure that supports school-site efforts to improve classroom instruction and learning. The structure would be based on clear and challenging standards for student learning; policy components would be tied to the standards and reinforce one another in providing guidance to schools and teachers about instruction
