    On the Spread of Viruses on the Internet

    We analyze the contact process on random graphs generated according to the preferential attachment scheme as a model for the spread of viruses in the Internet. We show that any virus with a positive rate of spread from a node to its neighbors has a non-vanishing chance of becoming epidemic. Quantitatively, we discover an interesting dichotomy: for it virus with effective spread rate λ, if the infection starts at a typical vertex, then it develops into an epidemic with probability λ^Θ ((log (1/ λ)/log log (1/ λ))), but on average the epidemic probability is λ^(Θ (1))

    Background: Elevated blood lead levels (EBLL) are declining in the United States, although some population subgroups continue to exhibit significant health disparities. A childhood lead poisoning prevention program was recently started in Nevada, and many efforts have been made to support this program and increase the screening rates. Methods: To expand the potential pool of children screened for EBLLs, a pilot study was performed to evaluate lead concentrations in extracted deciduous teeth using Graphic Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Results: Lead concentrations as determined by GFAAS and ICP-MS were found to be within normal ranges (0.585 ppm ± 0.022) and were similar to previous studies. Hispanic patients exhibited higher lead levels (0.580 ppm ± 0.032) than Black (0.478 ppm ± 0.051) patients, and were significantly higher than White (0.275 ppm ± 0.035) patients (p \u3c 0.05). Analysis of a small number of matched saliva samples, however, found no evidence for acute lead poisoning. Although limited by a small initial sample size (n=22), this pilot study provides evidence that teeth can be effectively used to reveal lead exposure in pediatric dentistry patients

    Preparing adolescents attending progressive and no-excuses urban charter schools to analyze, navigate, and challenge race and class inequality

    Background/Context: Sociopolitical development (SPD) refers to the processes by which an individual acquires the knowledge, skills, emotional faculties, and commitment to recognize and resist oppressive social forces. A growing body of scholarship has found that such sociopolitical capabilities are predictive in marginalized adolescents of a number of key outcomes, including resilience, academic achievement, and civic engagement. Many scholars have long argued that schools and educators have a central role to play in fostering the sociopolitical development of marginalized adolescents around issues of race and class inequality. Other scholars have investigated school-based practices for highlighting race and class inequality that include youth participatory-action research, critical literacy, and critical service-learning. Objective of Study: The present study sought to add to the existing scholarship on schools as opportunity structures for sociopolitical development. Specifically, this study considered the role of two different schooling models in fostering adolescents' ability to analyze, navigate, and challenge the social forces and institutions contributing to race and class inequality. Setting: The six high schools participating in the present study were all urban charter public high schools located in five northeastern cities. All six schools served primarily low-income youth of color and articulated explicit goals around fostering students' sociopolitical development. Three of these high schools were guided by progressive pedagogy and principles, and three were guided by no-excuses pedagogy and principles. Research Design: The present study compared the sociopolitical development of adolescents attending progressive and no-excuses charter high schools through a mixed methods research design involving pre-post surveys, qualitative interviews with participating adolescents and teachers, and ethnographic field notes collected during observations at participating schools. Results: On average, adolescents attending progressive high schools demonstrated more significant shifts in their ability to analyze the causes of racial inequality, but adolescents attending no-excuses high schools demonstrated more significant shifts in their sense of efficacy around navigating settings in which race and class inequality are prominent. Neither set of adolescents demonstrated significant shifts in their commitment to challenging the social forces or institutions contributing to race and class inequality. Conclusions: Both progressive and no-excuses schools sought to foster adolescents' commitment to challenging race and class inequality, but focused on different building blocks to do so. Further research is necessary to understand the pedagogy and practices that show promise in catalyzing adolescents' analytic and navigational abilities into a powerful commitment to collective social action-the ultimate goal of sociopolitical development

    Automatically detecting asymmetric running using time and frequency domain features

    Human motion analysis technologies have been widely employed to identify injury determining factors and provide objective and quantitative feedback to athletes to help prevent injury. However, most of these technologies are: ex- pensive, restricted to laboratory environments, and can require significant post processing. This reduces their ecological validity, adoption and usefulness. In this paper, we present a novel wearable inertial sensor framework to accurately distinguish between symmetrical and asymmetrical running patterns in an unconstrained environment. The framework can automatically classify symmetry/asymmetry using Short Time Fourier Trans- form (STFT) and other time domain features in conjunction with a customized Random Forest classifier. The accuracy of the designed framework is up to 94% using 3-D accelerometer and 3-D gyroscope data from a sensor node attached on the upper back of a subject. The upper back inertial sensors data were then down-sampled by a factor of 4 to simulate utilizing low-cost inertial sensors whilst also facilitating a decrease of the computational cost to achieve near real-time application. We conclude that the proposed framework can potentially pave the way for employing low-cost sensors, such as those used in smartphones, attached on the upper back to provide injury related and performance feedback in real-time in unconstrained environments

    This Community Service (PKM) aims to provide knowledge and insight to security guards who are carrying out Diksar (basic education) about public services, the rule of law, information technology, and the use of the Indonesian language that is good and right. The benefits of PKM activities are aimed at security guards (security) so that they can provide an understanding of public services, as law enforcers and comply with applicable laws or regulations, understand currently developing information technology and be able to use good and correct Indonesian according to situations and conditions . The results and conclusions of this PKM are that this PKM activity has educated and provided in-depth knowledge about the important role in terms of service and knowledge of security guards as law enforcers and obedient to rules, security guards can understand and apply information technology that is currently developing, and provide an understanding of the proper use of the Indonesian language according to the situation and conditions

    Differences in Lipid Measurements by Antiretroviral Regimen Exposure in Cohorts from Asia and Australia

    We explored the mean differences in routinely measured lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) according to exposure to different combination antiretroviral regimens in Asian (n = 2051) and Australian (predominantly Caucasian, n = 794) cohorts. The regimen was defined as at least 3 antiretroviral drugs with at least 2 nucleoside-reverse transcriptases (NRTIs) and either of at least one protease inhibitor (PI) or non-nucleoside-reverse transcriptases (NNRTIs). We categorised cART regimens as: NRTIs as tenofovir based or not; NNRTIs as nevirapine or efavirenz (but not both); and PI as atazanavir based or not. We found that the impact of various antiretroviral regimens on lipids in Asian and Australian cohorts was only different by cohort for total cholesterol (P for interaction between regimen and cohort: <0.001) but not in case of other lipids (P for interaction: >0.05). The differences in total cholesterol were however small and unlikely to be of clinical significance. Overall, tenofovir with nevirapine or atazanavir was associated with the most favorable lipids, while the PI regimens without tenofovir and atazanavir were associated with least favorable lipids. We conclude that the impact of various ART regimens on lipids is largely similar in Asian and Australian cohorts and that the newer drugs such as tenofovir and atazanavir are likely to provide similar benefit in terms of lipid profiles in both populations
