    Planting a misdiagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a person's mind

    Objective: There is an extensive corpus of knowledge about how misinformation may distort autobiographical memories. A diagnostic error can be conceptualised as a form of misinformation. Methods: The authors discuss the case of a 58-year-old woman who was given a misdiagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Results: The patient was deeply convinced that the diagnosis was correct, even when she was confronted with contradictory evidence. Conclusion: A diagnosis is not a neutral piece of information. It profoundly affects the lives of patients. The consequences of a misdiagnosis may be similar to persistent false memories

    The Effective Pre-school and Primary Education Project 3-11 (EPPE 3-11) is a largescale longitudinal study of the impact of pre-school and primary school on children’s developmental outcomes, both cognitive and social/behavioural. The study has been following children from the start of pre-school (at age 3 years plus) through to the end of primary school. Previous reports have focused on the educational and social/behavioural outcomes of the EPPE 3-11 sample at the end of Year 5 (age 10) and progress from the end of Year 1 (age 6) to the end of Year 5 (age 10) in primary school (Sammons et al., 2007a; 2007b). The research also explored the predictive power of a wide variety of child, parent, and family characteristics on attainment and development, including the Early years home learning environment (HLE) during the years of preschool and aspects of the later HLE during Key stage 1 of primary school (Sammons et al., 2002; 2003; Sylva et al., 2004). This research builds on earlier reports (Sammons et al., 2007a; 2007b) by investigating relationships between children’s outcomes in Year 5 and aspects of pupils’ selfperceptions and their views of primary school, measured in Year 5 (age 10) and in Year 2 (age 7) of primary school, controlling for background characteristics. These measures have been derived from a self-report instrument completed by EPPE 3-11 children.     The Effective Pre-School and Primary Education 3-11 (EPPE 3-11) project investigates the impact of preschool, primary school and family on a range of outcomes for a national sample of approximately 2,800 children in England between the ages of 3 and 11 years. This Research Brief presents findings on pupils’ Self-perceptions (‘Enjoyment of school’, ‘Anxiety and Isolation’, ‘Academic self-image’ and ‘Behavioural self-image’) and their views of different features of primary school (‘Teachers’ support for pupils’ learning’, ‘Headteacher qualities’ and ‘Positive social environment’) in Year 5. The analyses involved two steps: first, differences in pupils’ Self-perceptions and Views of primary school measured at Year 5 were explored, in relation to child, family and Home Learning Environment (HLE) characteristics. Second, the relationships between pupils’ Self-perceptions and their Views of primary school and educational outcomes and progress, both cognitive (Reading and Mathematics) and social/behavioural (‘Self-regulation’, ‘Hyperactivity’, ‘Pro-social’ and ‘Anti-social’ behaviour) were investigated. The analyses also explored pupils’ Self-perceptions measured at a younger age (Year 2) and how they relate to children’s later cognitive and social/behavioural outcomes in Year 5 and progress from Year 1 to Year 5

    Poor working memory predicts false memories

    Two studies investigated whether individual differences in simple span verbal working memory and complex working memory capacity are related to memory accuracy and susceptibility to false memory development. In Study 1, undergraduate students (N = 60) were given two simple span working memory tests: forward and backward digit span. They also underwent a memory task that is known to elicit false memories of nonpresented words, the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. Poor simple span working memory (as reflected by suboptimal backward digit span scores) was related to elevated levels of false recognition. Study 2 (N = 65) replicated this finding, in that suboptimal backward digit span performance was found to be predictive of false recognition. However, complex working memory capacity (operation span) was not related to false recognition. This pattern suggests that even in a homogenous sample of undergraduates, poor working memory is associated with the susceptibility to recollect words never presented

    Executive function does not predict coping with symptoms in stable patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Associations between coping with and control over psychotic symptoms were examined using the Maastricht Assessment of Coping Strategies-24, testing the hypothesis that the cognitive domain of executive functioning predicted quality and quantity of coping.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>MACS-24 was administered to 32 individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. For each of 24 symptoms, experience of distress, type of coping and the resulting degree of perceived control were assessed. Coping types were reduced to two contrasting coping categories: symptomatic coping (SC) and non-symptomatic coping (NSC; combining active problem solving, passive illness behaviour, active problem avoiding, and passive problem avoiding). Cognitive functioning was assessed using the GIT (Groninger Intelligence Test), the Zoo map (BADS: Behavioural Assessment of Dysexecutive function), Stroop-test and Trail making.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Cognitive function was not associated with frequency of coping, nor did cognitive function differentially predict SC or NSC. Cognitive function similarly was not associated with symptom distress or level of perceived control over the symptom.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was no evidence that cognitive function predicts quantity or quality of coping with symptoms in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Variation in the realm of emotion regulation and social cognition may be more predictive of coping with psychotic symptoms.</p

    The Functions of Mediator in Candida albicans Support a Role in Shaping Species-Specific Gene Expression

    The Mediator complex is an essential co-regulator of RNA polymerase II that is conserved throughout eukaryotes. Here we present the first study of Mediator in the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. We focused on the Middle domain subunit Med31, the Head domain subunit Med20, and Srb9/Med13 from the Kinase domain. The C. albicans Mediator shares some roles with model yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, such as functions in the response to certain stresses and the role of Med31 in the expression of genes regulated by the activator Ace2. The C. albicans Mediator also has additional roles in the transcription of genes associated with virulence, for example genes related to morphogenesis and gene families enriched in pathogens, such as the ALS adhesins. Consistently, Med31, Med20, and Srb9/Med13 contribute to key virulence attributes of C. albicans, filamentation, and biofilm formation; and ALS1 is a biologically relevant target of Med31 for development of biofilms. Furthermore, Med31 affects virulence of C. albicans in the worm infection model. We present evidence that the roles of Med31 and Srb9/Med13 in the expression of the genes encoding cell wall adhesins are different between S. cerevisiae and C. albicans: they are repressors of the FLO genes in S. cerevisiae and are activators of the ALS genes in C. albicans. This suggests that Mediator subunits regulate adhesion in a distinct manner between these two distantly related fungal species
