    Where Do U.S. Immigrants Come From, and Why?

    The United States has experienced rising immigration levels and changing source since the 1950s. The changes in source have been attributed to the 1965 Amendments to the Immigration Act that abolished country-quotas and replaced them with a system that emphasized family reunification. Some believed that the Amendments would not change the 'traditional' sources of US immigrants. Given this view, it seems all the more remarkable that the sources of immigration changed so dramatically. This paper isolates the economic and demographic fundamentals that determined immigration rates by source from 1971 to 1998 -- income, education, demographic composition and inequality. The paper also allows for persistence - big US foreign-born stocks implying a strong 'friends and neighbors' pull on current immigrant flows. Specific policy variables are included which are derived directly from the quotas allocated to different visa categories. Parameter estimates from the panel data are then used to implement counterfactual simulations that serve to isolate the effects of immigration policy as well as source-country economic and demographic conditions.

    Explaining U.S. immigration, 1971-98

    The authors develop and estimate a model explaining the level and country-source composition of United States immigration since the early 1970s. The model incorporates ratios of source country income, education, and demographic structure, as well as relative inequality. The authors'model also incorporates both network effects, as reflected in the stock of previous immigrants, and various controls for immigration quota policy. The model is estimated on a panel of 81 source countries for 1971-98. The results strongly support the influence of economic, demographic, and geographic variables as well as policy.     What accounts for the differences in rates of emigration from Latin America compared with those from other sending regions such as Asia and Africa? Why do cross-border migration rates vary so much across Latin America? What explains those rates? This paper looks at evidence covering the period between the early 1970s and the late 1990s. It represents the start of a project seeking answers to these questions.

    A molecular shell with star formation toward the supernova remnant G349.7+0.2

    A field of ~38'x38' around the supernova remnant (SNR) G349.7+0.2 has been surveyed in the CO J=1-0 transition with the 12 Meter Telescope of the NRAO, using the On-The-Fly technique. The resolution of the observations is 54". We have found that this remnant is interacting with a small CO cloud which, in turn, is part of a much larger molecular complex, which we call the ``Large CO Shell''. The Large CO Shell has a diameter of about 100 pc, an H_2 mass of 930,000 solar masses, and a density of 35 cm-3. We investigate the origin of this structure and suggest that an old supernova explosion ocurred about 4 million years ago, as a suitable hypothesis. Analyzing the interaction between G349.7+0.2 and the Large CO Shell, it is possible to determine that the shock front currently driven into the molecular gas is a non-dissociative shock (C-type), in agreement with the presence of OH 1720 MHz masers. The positional and kinematical coincidence among one of the CO clouds that constitute the Large CO Shell, an IRAS point-like source and an ultracompact H II region, indicate the presence of a recently formed star. We suggest that the formation of this star was triggered during the expansion of the Large CO Shell, and suggest the possibility that the same expansion also created the progenitor star of G349.7+0.2.     Free-Standing Leaping Experiments with a Power-Autonomous, Elastic-Spined Quadruped

    We document initial experiments with Canid, a freestanding, power-autonomous quadrupedal robot equipped with a parallel actuated elastic spine. Research into robotic bounding and galloping platforms holds scientific and engineering interest because it can both probe biological hypotheses regarding bounding and galloping mammals and also provide the engineering community with a new class of agile, efficient and rapidly-locomoting legged robots. We detail the design features of Canid that promote our goals of agile operation in a relatively cheap, conventionally prototyped, commercial off-the-shelf actuated platform. We introduce new measurement methodology aimed at capturing our robot’s “body energy” during real time operation as a means of quantifying its potential for agile behavior. Finally, we present joint motor, inertial and motion capture data taken from Canid’s initial leaps into highly energetic regimes exhibiting large accelerations that illustrate the use of this measure and suggest its future potential as a platform for developing efficient, stable, hence useful bounding gaits.     Disparities in routine breast cancer screening for medicaid managed care members with a work-limiting disability

    Objective: Examine disparities in routine mammography for women who qualify for Medicaid, because of a work-limiting disability. Methods: Individual-level data were obtained for women enrolled in Massachusetts Medicaid Managed Care plans who met the 2007 Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) criteria for the breast cancer screening measure (n=35,171). Disability status was determined from Medicaid eligibility records. Mammography screening was modeled using multivariate logistic regression. Separate models for women with and without a disability were also estimated. Results: Although unadjusted breast cancer screening rates were roughly equal for women with and without disability, after adjusting for confounders disability status had a significant negative association with screening mammography (OR=0.74; p Conclusion: Nationwide, rates of routine mammography for Medicaid managed care plans averaged below 50% in 2006. Given that a majority of eligible women served by Medicaid have disabilities, and studies have shown that women with disabilities are more likely to be diagnosed with late stage disease, a focus on improving rates of screening for women with disabilities is overdue

    Identification of Functional Platelet-Activating Factor Receptors on Human Keratinocytes

    Platelet-activating factor (PAP) is a potent inflammatory mediator that has been shown to be produced by human keratinocytes and is thought to play a role in cutaneous inflammation, Immunofluorescence and radioligand binding studies were used to characterize PAP receptors (PAF-R) on human keratinocytes and the human epidermoid cell lines A-431 and HaCaT. Indirect immunofluorescence studies demonstrated anti-PAF-R staining of primary cultures of human keratinocytes, A-431 cells, and HaCaT cells, Primary cultures of human fibroblasts and the melanoma cell line SK-30 failed to show immunostaining above that seen with control antiserum. With indirect immunofluorescence studies of sections of normal human skin, a granular anti-PAF-R staining pattern was noted on the keratinocyte cell membranes. A-431 cells readily metabolized PAF by deacetylationreacylation at 37°C, but not at 4°C. Binding studies on crude membrane preparations of A-431 cells conducted at 4°C demonstrated specific binding that reached saturation by 120 min. Scatchard analysis of PAF binding data revealed a single class of high-affinity (KD = 6.3 ± 0.3 nM) PAP binding sites, The immunofluorescence and radioligand binding sites were shown to be functional PAF-Rs, as 10 pM to 1 μM PAF increased intracellular calcium in primary cultures of human keratinocytes, A-.431 cells, and HaCaT cells, whereas PAF treatment of primary cultures of human fibroblasts or the melanoma cell line SK-30 did not result in changes in the intracellular calcium concentration. The structurally dissimilar PAF-R antagonists CV-6209, Ro19-3704, and alprazolam all inhibited the PAF-induced calcium changes in A-431 cells, The CV-6209 inhibition was seen at doses that competed with the PAF binding to these cells. These studies provide the first evidence for the presence of a functional PAF-R expressed on human keratinocytes, suggesting that this lipid mediator may play an important role in normal keratinocytes or in inflammatory dermatology

    Severity of Depression Predicts Remission Rates Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

    Background: Multiple factors likely impact response and remission rates in the treatment of depression with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Notably the role of symptom severity in outcomes with rTMS is poorly understood.Objective/Hypothesis: This study investigated the predictors of achieving remission in patients suffering from depression who receive ≥3 rTMS treatments per week. Methods: Available data on 41 patients treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from 2009 to 2014 were included for analysis. Patients received a range of pulse sequences from 3,000 to 5,000 with left sided or bilateral coil placement. Primary outcome measures were total score on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) or the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology—Self Rated (QIDS-SR). Remission was defined as a total score less than five, and response was defined as a 50% decrease in the total score on both outcome metrics. Outcomes in patients diagnosed as suffering from mild or moderate depression were compared to those suffering from severe depression. Results: Of the 41 patients receiving treatment, 16 reached remission by the end of treatment. Remission rate was associated with the initial severity of depression, with patients with mild or moderate depression reaching remission at a significantly higher rate than those with severe depression. Total number of rTMS sessions or length of treatment were not predictors of remission. Conclusion: Patients with a baseline level of depression characterized as mild or moderate had significantly better outcomes following rTMS compared to patients with severe depression
