Unimpeded permeation of water through helium-leak-tight graphene-based membranes

Permeation through nanometer pores is important in the design of materials for filtration and separation techniques and because of unusual fundamental behavior arising at the molecular scale. We found that submicron-thick membranes made from graphene oxide can be completely impermeable to liquids, vapors and gases, including helium, but allow unimpeded permeation of water (H2O permeates through the membranes at least 10^10 times faster than He). We attribute these seemingly incompatible observations to a low-friction flow of a monolayer of water through two dimensional capillaries formed by closely spaced graphene sheets. Diffusion of other molecules is blocked by reversible narrowing of the capillaries in low humidity and/or by their clogging with water

Variability and uncertainty in empirical ground-motion prediction for probabilistic hazard and risk analyses

© The Author(s) 2015.The terms aleatory variability and epistemic uncertainty mean different things to people who routinely use them within the fields of seismic hazard and risk analysis. This state is not helped by the repetition of loosely framed generic definitions that actually inaccurate. The present paper takes a closer look at the components of total uncertainty that contribute to ground-motion modelling in hazard and risk applications. The sources and nature of uncertainty are discussed and it is shown that the common approach to deciding what should be included within hazard and risk integrals and what should be pushed into logic tree formulations warrants reconsideration. In addition, it is shown that current approaches to the generation of random fields of ground motions for spatial risk analyses are incorrect and a more appropriate framework is presented

Constraining the variation of fundamental constants using 18cm OH lines

We describe a new technique to estimate variations in the fundamental constants using 18cm OH absorption lines. This has the advantage that all lines arise in the same species, allowing a clean comparison between the measured redshifts. In conjunction with one additional transition (for example, an HCO+^+ line), it is possible to simultaneously measure changes in α\alpha, gpg_p and y≡me/mpy \equiv m_e/m_p. At present, only the 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz lines have been detected at cosmological distances; we use these line redshifts in conjunction with those of HI 21cm and mm-wave molecular absorption in a gravitational lens at z∼0.68z\sim 0.68 to constrain changes in the above three parameters over the redshift range 0<z≲0.680 < z \lesssim 0.68. While the constraints are relatively weak (≲\lesssim 1 part in 10310^3), this is the first simultaneous constraint on the variation of all three parameters. We also demonstrate that either one (or more) of α\alpha, gpg_p and yy must vary with cosmological time or there must be systematic velocity offsets between the OH, HCO+^+ and HI absorbing clouds.Comment: 5 pages, no figures. Conjugate 18cm OH Satellite Lines at a Cosmological Distance

We have detected the two 18cm OH satellite lines from the z∼0.247z \sim 0.247 source PKS1413+135, the 1720 MHz line in emission and the 1612 MHz line in absorption. The 1720 MHz luminosity is LOH∼354L⊙L_{\rm OH} \sim 354 L_\odot, more than an order of magnitude larger than that of any other known 1720 MHz maser. The profiles of the two satellite lines are conjugate, implying that they arise in the same gas. This allows us to test for any changes in the values of fundamental constants, without being affected by systematic uncertainties arising from relative motions between the gas clouds in which the different lines arise. Our data constrain changes in G≡gp[α2/y]1.849G \equiv g_p [\alpha^2/y]^{1.849}, where y≡me/mp y \equiv m_e/m_p; we find ΔG/G=2.2±3.8×10−5\Delta G/G = 2.2 \pm 3.8 \times 10^{-5}, consistent with no changes in α\alpha, gpg_p and yy.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. The HI gas content of galaxies around Abell 370, a galaxy cluster at z = 0.37

We used observations from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to measure the atomic hydrogen gas content of 324 galaxies around the galaxy cluster Abell 370 at a redshift of z = 0.37 (a look-back time of ~4 billion years). The HI 21-cm emission from these galaxies was measured by coadding their signals using precise optical redshifts obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The average HI mass measured for all 324 galaxies is (6.6 +- 3.5)x10^9 solar masses, while the average HI mass measured for the 105 optically blue galaxies is (19.0 +- 6.5)x10^9 solar masses. The significant quantities of gas found around Abell 370, suggest that there has been substantial evolution in the gas content of galaxy clusters since redshift z = 0.37. The total amount of HI gas found around Abell 370 is up to ~8 times more than that seen around the Coma cluster, a nearby galaxy cluster of similar size. Despite this higher gas content, Abell 370 shows the same trend as nearby clusters, that galaxies close to the cluster core have lower HI gas content than galaxies further away. The Abell 370 galaxies have HI mass to optical light ratios similar to local galaxy samples and have the same correlation between their star formation rate and HI mass as found in nearby galaxies. The average star formation rate derived from [OII] emission and from de-redshifted 1.4 GHz radio continuum for the Abell 370 galaxies also follows the correlation found in the local universe. The large amounts of HI gas found around the cluster can easily be consumed by the observed star formation rate in the galaxies over the ~4 billion years (from z = 0.37) to the present day.Comment: accepted by MNRA

Comparative study between open versus laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty

Background: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the commonly performed procedure and has undergone a paradigm shift from open to laparoscopic approach in the era of minimally invasive surgery but the superiority is still debatable. The aim was to compare open (Lichtenstein) versus laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal approach (TAPP) hernia repair techniques. Methods: A total of 60 patients were enrolled in the study and divided into two equal groups (open versus laparoscopic) were compared. Results: It was observed that laparoscopic repair (TAPP) has statistically significant superiority than open inguinal hernioplasty in terms of lesser post-operative pain (VAS score of 4.8±0.66, 3.67±0.66, 2.53±0.82 versus 6.7±0.92, 5.03±0.72, 3.83±0.65 at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours post operatively, p value <0.001), shorter duration of hospital stay (3.1±0.71 days versus 5.83±0.75 days, p value <0.001) and early resumption to regular activities (10.57±2.28 days versus 12.2±1.52 days, p value 0.002). It also showed that incidence intra operative and post-operative complications was lesser in laparoscopic group but not statistically significant. Whereas duration of surgery was prolonged in laparoscopic group (104±27.49 min versus 61.5±17.08 min, p value <0.001). Conclusions: Laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty (TAPP) is superior to open inguinal hernioplasty in terms of lesser intra operative and post-operative complications, lesser post-operative pain, shorter duration of hospital stay with early resumption to regular activities having better subjective and objective cosmetic results in short term follow-up. However, duration of surgery was prolonged on comparison with Lichtenstein open inguinal hernioplasty

Neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) gas evolution in field galaxies at z similar to 0.1 and similar to 0.2

We measure the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) gas content of field galaxies at intermediate redshifts of z similar to 0.1 and similar to 0.2 using hydrogen 21-cm emission lines observed with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. In order to make high signal-to-noise ratio detections, an H i signal stacking technique is applied: H i emission spectra from multiple galaxies, optically selected by the second Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology redshift survey project, are co-added to measure the average H i mass of galaxies in the two redshift bins. We calculate the cosmic H i gas densities ((Hi)) at the two redshift regimes and compare those with measurements at other redshifts to investigate the global evolution of the H i gas density over cosmic time. From a total of 59 galaxies at z similar to 0.1 we find (Hi) = (0.33 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3), and at z similar to 0.2 we find (Hi) = (0.34 +/- 0.09) x 10(-3), based on 96 galaxies. These measurements help bridge the gap between high-z damped Lyman alpha observations and blind 21-cm surveys at z = 0. We find that our measurements of (Hi) at z similar to 0.1 and similar to 0.2 are consistent with the H i gas density at z similar to 0 and that all measurements of (Hi) from 21-cm emission observations at z less than or similar to 0.2 are in agreement with no evolution of the H i gas content in galaxies during the last 2.4 Gyr.

The HI content of star-forming galaxies at z = 0.24

We use observations from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to measure the atomic hydrogen gas content of star-forming galaxies at z = 0.24 (i.e. a look-backtime of ~3 Gyr). The sample of galaxies studied were selected from Halpha-emitting field galaxies detected in a narrow-band imaging survey with the Subaru Telescope. The Anglo-Australian Telescope was used to obtain precise optical redshifts for these galaxies. We then coadded the HI 21 cm emission signal for all the galaxies within the GMRT spectral line data cube. From the coadded signal of 121 galaxies, we measure an average atomic hydrogen gas mass of (2.26 +- 0.90)*10^9 solar masses. We translate this HI signal into a cosmic density of neutral gas at z = 0.24 of Omega_gas = (0.91 +- 0.42)*10^-3. This is the current highest redshift at which Omega_gas has been constrained from 21 cm emission and our value is consistent with that estimated from damped Lyman-alpha systems around this redshift. We also find that the correlations between the Halpha luminosity and the radio continuum luminosity and between the star formation rate and the HI gas content in star-forming galaxies at z = 0.24 are consistent with the correlations found at z = 0. These two results suggest that the star formation mechanisms in field galaxies ~3 Gyr ago were not substantially different from the present, even though the star formation rate is 3 times higher.Comment: 11 pages, contains 9 figures and 1 table.
