    Determining Competitiveness of Pakistan Sports Goods Industry Using Revealed Comparative Analysis

      This study calculates and explains the comparative advantage of Pakistan\u27s sports goods industries in the international market. Static and dynamic comparative advantage analysis differentiates this work from the previous ones for the sports goods industry. The top ten Pakistani sports items have been chosen for this purpose. The product positioning of these products in the international market has also been determined. The results of this study indicate that China and India have a strong revealed comparative advantage in festivals, carnivals, or other forms of entertainment goods and Balls, respectively. In contrast, the United States, Thailand, and Indonesia have a significant revealed comparative advantage in Golf balls. China acquires a competitive position in the global market in 9 of Pakistan\u27s top 10 sports items for 2019. According to dynamic revealed comparative advantage, Pakistan has the most significant revealed comparative advantage for inflatable balls from 2005 to 2019 in the international market, implying that Pakistan has a competitive edge in exporting this product. The Government of Pakistan needs to prioritize and facilitate the sports goods industry for increasing exports of this industry

    Modeling induction and routing to monitor hospitalized patients in multi-hop mobility-aware body area sensor networks

    In wireless body area sensor networks (WBASNs), energy efficiency is an area of extreme significance. At first, we present a mathematical model for a non-invasive inductive link which is used to recharge the battery of an implanted biomedical device (pacemaker). Afterwards, we propose a distance-aware relaying energy-efficient (DARE) and mutual information-based DARE (MI-DARE) routing protocols for multihop mobility-aware body area sensor networks (MM-BASNs). Both the routing protocols and the non-invasive inductive link model are tested with the consideration of eight patients in a hospital unit under different topologies, where the vital signs of each patient are monitored through seven on-body sensors and an implanted pacemaker. To reduce energy consumption of the network, the sensors communicate with a sink via an on-body relay which is fixed on the chest of each patient. The behavior (static/mobile) and position of the sink are changed in each topology, and the impact of mobility due to postural changes of the patient(s) arms, legs, and head is also investigated. The MI-DARE protocol further prolongs the network lifetime by minimizing the number of transmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques outperform contemporary schemes in terms of the selected performance metrics. © 2016, Javaid et al

    Global, regional, and national burden of disorders affecting the nervous system, 1990–2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

    BACKGROUND: Disorders affecting the nervous system are diverse and include neurodevelopmental disorders, late-life neurodegeneration, and newly emergent conditions, such as cognitive impairment following COVID-19. Previous publications from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study estimated the burden of 15 neurological conditions in 2015 and 2016, but these analyses did not include neurodevelopmental disorders, as defined by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11, or a subset of cases of congenital, neonatal, and infectious conditions that cause neurological damage. Here, we estimate nervous system health loss caused by 37 unique conditions and their associated risk factors globally, regionally, and nationally from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: We estimated mortality, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), by age and sex in 204 countries and territories, from 1990 to 2021. We included morbidity and deaths due to neurological conditions, for which health loss is directly due to damage to the CNS or peripheral nervous system. We also isolated neurological health loss from conditions for which nervous system morbidity is a consequence, but not the primary feature, including a subset of congenital conditions (ie, chromosomal anomalies and congenital birth defects), neonatal conditions (ie, jaundice, preterm birth, and sepsis), infectious diseases (ie, COVID-19, cystic echinococcosis, malaria, syphilis, and Zika virus disease), and diabetic neuropathy. By conducting a sequela-level analysis of the health outcomes for these conditions, only cases where nervous system damage occurred were included, and YLDs were recalculated to isolate the non-fatal burden directly attributable to nervous system health loss. A comorbidity correction was used to calculate total prevalence of all conditions that affect the nervous system combined. FINDINGS: Globally, the 37 conditions affecting the nervous system were collectively ranked as the leading group cause of DALYs in 2021 (443 million, 95% UI 378–521), affecting 3·40 billion (3·20–3·62) individuals (43·1%, 40·5–45·9 of the global population); global DALY counts attributed to these conditions increased by 18·2% (8·7–26·7) between 1990 and 2021. Age-standardised rates of deaths per 100 000 people attributed to these conditions decreased from 1990 to 2021 by 33·6% (27·6–38·8), and age-standardised rates of DALYs attributed to these conditions decreased by 27·0% (21·5–32·4). Age-standardised prevalence was almost stable, with a change of 1·5% (0·7–2·4). The ten conditions with the highest age-standardised DALYs in 2021 were stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, diabetic neuropathy, meningitis, epilepsy, neurological complications due to preterm birth, autism spectrum disorder, and nervous system cancer. INTERPRETATION: As the leading cause of overall disease burden in the world, with increasing global DALY counts, effective prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies for disorders affecting the nervous system are needed

    Ginger Loaded Polyethylene Oxide Electrospun Nanomembrane: Rheological and Antimicrobial Attributes

    Synthetic antibiotics have captured the market in recent years, but the side effects of these products are life-threatening. In recent times, researchers have focused their research on natural-based products such as natural herbal oils, which are eco-friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, and antibacterial. In this study, polyethylene oxide (PEO) and aqueous ginger extract (GE) were electrospun to produce novel antibacterial nanomembrane sheets as a function of PEO and GE concentrations. A GE average particle size of 91.16 nm was achieved with an extensive filtration process, inferring their incorporation in the PEO nanofibres. The presence of the GE was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) through peaks of phenol and aromatic groups. The viscoelastic properties of PEO/GE solutions were analysed in terms of PEO and GE concentrations. Increasing PEO and GE concentrations increased the solution’s viscosity. The dynamic viscosity of 3% was not changed with increasing shear rate, indicating Newtonian fluid behaviour. The dynamic viscosity of 4 and 5 wt% PEO/GE solutions containing 10% GE increased exponentially compared to 3 wt%. In addition, the shear thinning behaviour was observed over a frequency range of 0.05 to 100 rad/s. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis also specified an increase in the nanofibre’s diameter with increasing PEO concentration, while SEM images displayed smooth morphology with beadless nanofibres at different PEO/GE concentrations. In addition, PEO/GE nanomembranes inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, as presented by qualitative antibacterial results. The extent of PEO/GE nanomembrane’s antibacterial activity was further investigated by the agar dilution method, which inhibited the 98.79% Staphylococcus aureus population at 30% GE concentration

    Medicine Affordability and Accessibility: A Case of Low and Middle-Income Group of Gujranwala District

    In Pakistan, around two-thirds population is away from essential medicines because of the higher prices prevalent in the private sector and the low availability of medicines in the public sector (WHO, Health profile of Pakistan). High out-of-pocket payments on medicines increase the burden on poor households. Using the World Health Organization and Health Action International methods, a survey of 50 medications was undertaken in District Gujranwala of the Punjab, Pakistan, to assess drug availability and affordability status. The findings reveal that medicine availability is deficient in public sector hospitals, which are the primary source of free medicines for the public, while the availability is high in the private sector. Poor households have to face serious financial issues because of the higher prices. Therefore, the government needs to ensure the availability of medicines in the public sector through efficient procurement. To reduce the prices of medicines in the private sector, the government must promote low-price generic medicines and set a price cap for essential medicines

    The most challenging aspect identified in this study revolves around effectively managing machine breakdowns to ensure uninterrupted production. This paper presents a real-time dynamic scheduling model that addresses the challenges of the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSSP) while considering the occurrence of random machine breakdowns. An improved hybrid metaheuristic and rule-based multi-strategy technique has been proposed that regenerates an optimized dynamic schedule when a random machine is interrupted. The proposed technique establishes that the presence of real-time system updates from IoT devices will improve scheduling decisions. The proposed methodology’s efficacy is showcased through an extensive computational investigation encompassing 9 benchmark problems and a real-world case study, considering three performance objectives (Robustness, Stability and Compound Effectiveness). The results have been compared with three related techniques from literature. The proposed technique gives better results in most cases and can be adopted in increasing the performance of Manufacturing Execution Systems in an Industry 4.0 setup (MES 4.0)

    Interleukin 17 F is a member of IL-17 cytokine family with a 50% structural homology to IL-17A and plays a significant role either alone or in combination with IL-17A towards inflammation in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A growing number of drugs targeting IL-17 pathway are being tested against population specific disease markers. The major objective of this research was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Anakinra (an IL-1 R1 inhibitor) and Ustekinumab (an IL-12 and IL-23 inhibitor) by targeting IL17F. The three dimensional structures of IL17F was taken from PDB while structures of drugs were taken from PubChem database. Docking was performed using MOE and Schrodinger ligand docking software and binding energies, including s-score using London-dG fitness function and glide score using glide internal energy function, between drug and targets were compared. Furthermore, Protein-Drug complex were subjected to 150 ns Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulations using Schrodinger’s Desmond Module. Docking and MD simulation results suggest anakinra as a more potent IL17F inhibitor and forming a more structurally stable complex. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma</p
