Exploring deep brain stimulation as a treatment for tinnitus

Roughly 10-15% of people suffer from tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Many patients experience various symptoms associated with the continuous ringing sound. Unfortunately, no treatment is currently available for tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that tinnitus is caused by disrupted brain signals. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) sends electrical impulses to the brain to correct these disruptions. Several studies carried out as part of this dissertation found DBS to be a suitable treatment option for tinnitus. However, further research is necessary before this treatment can be applied in practice

Sustainability in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Projects

Sustainability is without doubt one of the most important challenges of our time. How can we develop prosperity, without compromising the life of future generations? Companies are integrating concepts of sustainability in their marketing, corporate communications, annual reports and in their actions. It is for that reason that sustainability is rapidly gaining importance as a criteria in the selection and execution of information and communication technology (ICT) projects. This paper explores the impact of the concepts of sustainability on ICT projects. Based on a literature review of the concepts of sustainability, and the role of ICT in sustainability, we will apply the concepts of sustainability to ICT projects and create a framework for developing sustainability indicators in ICT projects. We will conclude the paper by reporting a small scale expert research project that explored the application of sustainability in projects today.
