Effects of cobalt in nickel-base superalloys
The role of cobalt in a representative wrought nickel-base superalloy was determined. The results show cobalt affecting the solubility of elements in the gamma matrix, resulting in enhanced gamma' volume fraction, in the stabilization of MC-type carbides, and in the stabilization of sigma phase. In the particular alloy studied, these microstructural and microchemistry changes are insufficient in extent to impact on tensile strength, yield strength, and in the ductilities. Depending on the heat treatment, creep and stress rupture resistance can be cobalt sensitive. In the coarse grain, fully solutioned and aged condition, all of the alloy's 17% cobalt can be replaced by nickel without deleteriously affecting this resistance. In the fine grain, partially solutioned and aged condition, this resistance is deleteriously affected only when one-half or more of the initial cobalt content is removed. The structure and property results are discussed with respect to existing theories and with respect to other recent and earlier findings on the impact of cobalt, if any, on the performance of nickel-base superalloys
The Bulk Motion of Flat Edge-On Galaxies Based on 2MASS Photometry
We report the results of applying the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (TF) relations to
study the galaxy bulk flows. For 1141 all-sky distributed flat RFGC galaxies we
construct J, H, K_s TF relations and find that Kron magnitudes show
the smallest dispersion on the TF diagram. For the sample of 971 RFGC galaxies
with V_{3K} < 18000 km/s we find a dispersion and an
amplitude of bulk flow V= 199 +/-61 km/s, directed towards l=301 degr +/-18
degr, b=-2 degr +/-15 degr. Our determination of low-amplitude coherent flow is
in good agreement with a set of recent data derived from EFAR, PSCz, SCI/SCII
samples. The resultant two- dimensional smoothed peculiar velocity field traces
well the large-scale density variations in the galaxy distributions. The
regions of large positive peculiar velocities lie in the direction of the Great
Attractor and Shapley concentration. A significant negative peculiar velocity
is seen in the direction of Bootes and in the direction of the Local void. A
small positive peculiar velocity (100 -- 150 km/s) is seen towards the
Pisces-Perseus supercluster, as well as the Hercules - Coma - Corona Borealis

How Barred is the NIR Nearby Universe? An analysis using 2MASS
We determine a firm lower limit to the bar fraction of 0.58 in the nearby
universe using J+H+Ks-band images for 134 spirals from 2MASS. With a mean
deprojected semi-major axis of 5.1 kpc, and a mean deprojected ellipticity of
0.45 this local bar sample lays the ground work for studies on bar formation

Dermatological Disease in the Older Age Group: A Cross-sectional Study in Aged Care Facilities
Background: Older people living in aged care facilities face multiple potential barriers to accessing dermatological care including physical and/or cognitive disability. This group is therefore at risk for undiagnosed and untreated dermatological disease including inflammatory dermatoses and skin cancer. Methods: Two large aged care facilities providing both low level (residential) and high level (hospital) care were selected for this cross-sectional study. Each participant underwent a full dermatological examination. In addition, functional and cognitive status were assessed using the Rehabilitation Complexity Scale and Abbreviated Mental Test score. Results: 88 participants were recruited and 81.8% were found to have at least one significant condition. Inflammatory disease was more common in those with little physical disability compared to those with serious physical disability (odds ratio 3.69; 95% CI 1.1-12.6, p=0.04). No significant association was found between skin disease and cognitive impairment. Conclusion: A high rate of dermatological disease was found. Findings ranged from frequent but not lifethreatening conditions (e.g. onychomycosis), to those associated with a significant morbidity (e.g. eczema, lichen sclerosus and bullous pemphigoid), to potentially life-threatening (e.g. squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma and breast cancer). Identification of novel subgroup a variants with enhanced receptor binding and replicative capacity in primary isolates of anaemogenic strains of feline leukaemia virus
<b>BACKGROUND:</b>
The development of anaemia in feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-infected cats is associated with the emergence of a novel viral subgroup, FeLV-C. FeLV-C arises from the subgroup that is transmitted, FeLV-A, through alterations in the amino acid sequence of the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the envelope glycoprotein that result in a shift in the receptor usage and the cell tropism of the virus. The factors that influence the transition from subgroup A to subgroup C remain unclear, one possibility is that a selective pressure in the host drives the acquisition of mutations in the RBD, creating A/C intermediates with enhanced abilities to interact with the FeLV-C receptor, FLVCR. In order to understand further the emergence of FeLV-C in the infected cat, we examined primary isolates of FeLV-C for evidence of FeLV-A variants that bore mutations consistent with a gradual evolution from FeLV-A to FeLV-C.<p></p>
<b>RESULTS:</b>
Within each isolate of FeLV-C, we identified variants that were ostensibly subgroup A by nucleic acid sequence comparisons, but which bore mutations in the RBD. One such mutation, N91D, was present in multiple isolates and when engineered into a molecular clone of the prototypic FeLV-A (Glasgow-1), enhanced replication was noted in feline cells. Expression of the N91D Env on murine leukaemia virus (MLV) pseudotypes enhanced viral entry mediated by the FeLV-A receptor THTR1 while soluble FeLV-A Env bearing the N91D mutation bound more efficiently to mouse or guinea pig cells bearing the FeLV-A and -C receptors. Long-term in vitro culture of variants bearing the N91D substitution in the presence of anti-FeLV gp70 antibodies did not result in the emergence of FeLV-C variants, suggesting that additional selective pressures in the infected cat may drive the subsequent evolution from subgroup A to subgroup C.<p></p>
<b>CONCLUSIONS:</b>
Our data support a model in which variants of FeLV-A, bearing subtle differences in the RBD of Env, may be predisposed towards enhanced replication in vivo and subsequent conversion to FeLV-C. The selection pressures in vivo that drive the emergence of FeLV-C in a proportion of infected cats remain to be established
Galaxies behind the Galactic plane: First results and perspectives from the VVV Survey
Vista Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) is an ESO variability survey that is
performing observations in near infrared bands (ZYJHKs) towards the Galactic
bulge and part of the disk with the completeness limits at least 3 mag deeper
than 2MASS. In the present work, we searched in the VVV survey data for
background galaxies near the Galactic plane using ZYJHKs photometry that covers
1.636 square degrees. We identified 204 new galaxy candidates by analyzing
colors, sizes, and visual inspection of multi-band (ZYJHKs) images. The galaxy
candidates colors were also compared with the predicted ones by star counts
models considering a more realistic extinction model at the same completeness
limits observed by VVV. A comparison of the galaxy candidates with the expected
one by Milennium simulations is also presented. Our results increase the number
density of known galaxies behind the Milky Way by more than one order of
magnitude. A catalog with galaxy properties including ellipticity, Petrosian
radii and ZYJHKs magnitudes is provided, as well as comparisons of the results

Challenges and solutions during analysis in a longitudinal narrative case study.
AIM: To describe the challenges faced by those performing complex qualitative analysis during a narrative study and to offer solutions. BACKGROUND: Qualitative research requires rigorous analysis. However, novice researchers often struggle to identify appropriately robust analytical procedures that will move them from their transcripts to their final findings. The lack of clear and detailed accounts in the literature that consider narrative analysis and how to address some of the common challenges researchers face add to this problem. DATA SOURCES: A longitudinal narrative case study exploring the personal and familial changes reported by uninjured family members during the first year of another family member's traumatic brain injury. Review methods This is a methodological paper. DISCUSSION: The challenges of analysis included: conceptualising analysis; demonstrating the relationship between the different analytical layers and the final research findings; interpreting the data in a way that reflected the priorities of a narrative approach; and managing large quantities of data. The solutions explored were: the mapping of analytic intentions; aligning analysis and interpretation with the conceptual framework; and the use of matrices to store and manage quotes, codes and reflections. CONCLUSION: Working with qualitative data can be daunting for novice researchers. Ensuring rigorous, transparent, and auditable data analysis procedures can further constrain the interpretive aspect of analysis. Implications for research/practice The solutions offered in this paper should help novice researchers to manage and work with their data, assisting them to develop the confidence to be more intuitive and creative in their research
Catalog of Isolated Galaxies Selected from the 2MASS Survey
We search for isolated galaxies based on the automatic identification of
isolated sources from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) followed by a
visual inspection of their surroundings. We use the modified Karachentseva
criterion to compile a catalog of 3227 isolated galaxies (2MIG), which contains
6% of 2MASS Extended Sources Catalog (or 2MASX) sources brighter than Ks = 12
mag with angular diameters a_K > 30 arcsec. The catalog covers the entire sky
and has an effective depth of z = 0.02. The 2493 very isolated objects of the
catalog, which we include into the 2MVIG catalog, can be used as a reference
sample to investigate the effects of the environment on the structure and
evolution of galaxies located in regions with extremely low density of matter.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure
