The perils of professionalism: lawyers, teachers, and engineers in Nazi Germany

"The contradiction between the professions' progressive self-representation and their self-seeking opportunism was especially disastrous in their collaboration with National Socialism. As a result of the overcrowding and unemployment in the late Weimar Republic, many well educated Germans lent a willing ear to the radical propaganda of NS-affiliates which clamored for the exclusion of Jews, Leftists and women. While young, male, Aryan university graduates profited from the Nazi seizure of power, their hopes for a re-professionalization were quickly dashed by the loss of autonomy and ideological indoctrination in favor of race, war and empire. Many professionals therefore experienced the Third Reich as a severe de-professionalization by decreasing their number, weakening their training, abolishing their organizational freedom and involving them in atrocities. On the basis of the German example, the article therefore tries to warn against the consequences of ignoring the ethical foundations of liberal professionalism." (author's abstract

The great change: quantitative approaches to the transformation of European society

In dem Beitrag wird ein Überblick über quantitative Annäherungen an die Geschichte aus der Sicht der historischen Sozialforschung gegeben, so wie sie sich auf der Bellagio-Konferenz dargestellt haben. Es werden die Schwierigkeiten aufgezeigt, die verhindern, daß die quantitative Forschung im Kontext der Geschichtswissenschaft voll anerkannt wird. Um zu zeigen, wie diese Schwierigkeiten überwunden werden können, wird beispielhaft die Transformation der europäischen Gesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts in eine transnationale, multidimensionale moderne Gesellschaft untersucht. Verschiedene Forschungsansätze dazu werden skizziert. Als ein zweiter Schwerpunkt der historischen Debatte wird die Beziehung zwischen Bevölkerungswachstum und Entwicklung der modernen Familie dargestellt. Am Beispiel der mittel- und osteuropäischen Eliten werden die Möglichkeiten quantitativer Forschung in der Geistesgeschichte aufgezeigt. Insgesamt wird durch die selbstkritische Sicht während der Konferenz eine Weiterführung in Richtung auf eine qualitative und quantitative Forschung ermöglicht. (KW

(Inter)national styles of quantitative history (1987)

Die quantitative Geschichtsforschung hat schrittweise ihre internationale Dimension ausgebaut. Die meisten Pionierarbeiten zur Anwendung quantitativer Methoden sind in den USA entstanden. Eine Reihe von Konferenzen mit der Teilnahme amerikanischer und sowjetischer oder westdeutscher Geschichtswissenschaftler, das Projekt der Übersetzung der Annales sowie mehrere Treffen zwischen führenden Historikern zeigte das Interesse an der quantitativ forschenden Arbeitsweise und förderte ihre Entwicklung in anderen Ländern. Der Autor bezeichnet die Tatsache als paradox, dass mit dem Fortschreiten der Vereinheitlichung der Hardware und der Software ihre Anwendung immer weiter von den US-amerikanischen Mustern abwich. Er schildert die einzelnen Entwicklungsschritte im Zeitraum zwischen dem Ende der 1920er und den 1980er Jahren sowie ihre Eigenart in den einzelnen Regionen. Promises and problems of quantitative research in Central European history

"In spite of a grand tradition of statistical analysis in the last decades of the 19th century, quantitative methods spread more slowly among German historians than among their French or British colleagues who were interested in the structural approach of the Annales or in family demography. This essay describes the organizational efforts of Quantum in Germany and of the quantitative methods committee of the Conference Group for German History in the United States. Moreover, it contrasts the results of a German and American survey of the use of these methods, noting considerable differences between the two contexts in subject matter and interpretation. The article aimed at convincing reluctant scholars to make use of quantification and to progress to more sophisticated statistical analyses wherever interpretative questions demand it. Beyond the national narrative: implications of reunification for recent German history

"This essay addresses the interpretative implications of German unification. First, the precise interaction between the international framework of détente and the internal dynamics of the democratic awakening has to be traced in order to explain the surprising overthrow of Communism and the return of a German national state. Therefore part of the history of the years 1990-2010 in Germany, sometimes referred to as the 'Berlin Republic', can be understood as working out the consequences of unification. But then it must also be realized, that a growing part is also composed of other issues such as globalization, immigration and educational reform. Hence the resumption of the national narrative is a backward-looking perspective that blocks the recognition of more recent problem areas that cannot be dealt with by telling a success story about the Federal Republic. Instead a history of the present require an engagement with new transnational issues of postmodern modernity." (author's abstract

The illusion of limited war: chancellor Bethmann Hollweg's calculated risk, July 1914

"The central figure in the Fischer controversy about Germany's responsibility for the outbreak of the First World War was the imperial chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg. On the basis of the controversial diary of his personal assistant Kurt Riezler, this article revisits the policy of the civilian leader of the German government, characterized by a 'defensive aggressiveness'. Fearing the growth of Russian power and closer Anglo-French cooperation, Bethmann was willing to run a 'calculated risk' by backing a local Balkan war in which Austria could defeat Serbia, while risking a continental war with Russia and France in order to split the Entente. This gamble failed due to the Russian decision for general mobilization, German military pressure to invade Belgium and the British entry into the conflict that expanded the conflict to a European war which Berlin was unlikely to win. With such arguments the article tries to sketch a complex intermediary position between critics and apologists of German 'war guilt.'" (author's abstract

The return of history: the unification of German historiographies and the search for master narratives

Der Beitrag untersucht, welche Konsequenzen die Ereignisse von 1989 und die deutsch-deutsche Vereinigung für die Wissenschaftslandschaft, insbesondere die Geschichtswissenschaftler, der DDR nach sich gezogen haben. Die unverhoffte Einheit brachte nämlich nicht nur neue Freiheiten, sondern auch das Ende bestimmter Privilegien, die an die SED-Diktatur geknüpft waren. Auf der intellektuellen Ebene müssen sich westliche Geschichtswissenschaftler mit der Frage beschäftigen, wie diese "zweite" deutsche Diktatur zu erklären ist. Auf diesem Hintergrund verfolgt der Beitrag unter dem Stichwort der "nationalen Meistererzählung" die unterschiedlichen Geschichtsschreibungen der BRD und der DDR nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, berichtet von den Innovation im universitären Bereich nach der Wende sowie von den Benachteiligungen der DDR-Wissenschaftler und DDR-Institutionen. Der Autor plädiert für eine ausgewogeneren wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Ansatz bei der Herangehensweise an die akademische Transformation. Statt die Perspektive auf das erfolgreichere System der Bundesrepublik zu begrenzen, könnte ein offenerer Ansatz ebenso versuchen, die Erinnerungen an die Erlebnisse in der DDR explizit einzubeziehen. Aus solchen multiplen Perspektiven entsteht keine neue nationale Meistererzählung der erweiterten Bundesrepublik, wohl aber ein Verständnis für die Brüche und Unwägbarkeiten deutscher Geschichte. (ICH
