Branching and annihilating Levy flights
We consider a system of particles undergoing the branching and annihilating
reactions A -> (m+1)A and A + A -> 0, with m even. The particles move via
long-range Levy flights, where the probability of moving a distance r decays as
r^{-d-sigma}. We analyze this system of branching and annihilating Levy flights
(BALF) using field theoretic renormalization group techniques close to the
upper critical dimension d_c=sigma, with sigma<2. These results are then
compared with Monte-Carlo simulations in d=1. For sigma close to unity in d=1,
the critical point for the transition from an absorbing to an active phase
occurs at zero branching. However, for sigma bigger than about 3/2 in d=1, the
critical branching rate moves smoothly away from zero with increasing sigma,
and the transition lies in a different universality class, inaccessible to
controlled perturbative expansions. We measure the exponents in both
universality classes and examine their behavior as a function of sigma.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
The reaction in ion-ion collisions
We study the threshold -meson production in the process , which appears as a possible important mechanism in high energy
nuclei-nuclei collisions. The isotopic invariance of the strong interaction and
the selection rules due to P-parity and total angular momentum result in a
general and model independent parametrization of the spin structure of the
matrix element in terms of three partial amplitudes. In the framework of
one-pion exchange model these amplitudes can be derived in terms of the two
threshold partial amplitudes for the process . We predict the
ratio of cross sections for meson production in - and -collisions and the polarization properties of the -meson, in
, as a function of a single parameter, which
characterizes the relative role of transversal and longitudinal -meson
polarizations in the process .Comment: 10 pages 3 figure
Heat kernel regularization of the effective action for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations
The presence of fluctuations and non-linear interactions can lead to scale
dependence in the parameters appearing in stochastic differential equations.
Stochastic dynamics can be formulated in terms of functional integrals. In this
paper we apply the heat kernel method to study the short distance
renormalizability of a stochastic (polynomial) reaction-diffusion equation with
real additive noise. We calculate the one-loop {\emph{effective action}} and
its ultraviolet scale dependent divergences. We show that for white noise a
polynomial reaction-diffusion equation is one-loop {\emph{finite}} in and
, and is one-loop renormalizable in and space dimensions. We
obtain the one-loop renormalization group equations and find they run with
scale only in .Comment: 21 pages, uses ReV-TeX 3.
Velocity-force characteristics of an interface driven through a periodic potential
We study the creep dynamics of a two-dimensional interface driven through a
periodic potential using dynamical renormalization group methods. We find that
the nature of weak-drive transport depends qualitatively on whether the
temperature is above or below the equilibrium roughening transition
temperature . Above , the velocity-force characteristics is Ohmic,
with linear mobility exhibiting a jump discontinuity across the transition. For
, the transport is highly nonlinear, exhibiting an interesting
crossover in temperature and weak external force . For intermediate drive,
, we find near a power-law velocity-force characteristics
, with , and well-below ,
, with . In the limit
of vanishing drive () the velocity-force characteristics crosses over
to , and is controlled by soliton nucleation.Comment: 18 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
The diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in differentiating benign and malignant pediatric ovarian tumors
BACKGROUND: The diagnostic workup of ovarian tumors in children and adolescents is challenging because preserving fertility, in addition to oncological safety, is of particular importance in this population. Therefore, a thorough preoperative assessment of ovarian tumors is required. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of MR imaging in differentiating benign from malignant ovarian tumors in children and adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all children and adolescents age <18 years who underwent MR imaging of ovarian tumors during 2014-2019 at a pediatric specialty center. Two radiologists reviewed all MR imaging. We used pathology reports to define the histological diagnosis. RESULTS: We included 30 girls who underwent MR imaging for an ovarian tumor. Signs indicative for malignancy were tumors with a diameter âĽ8 cm, with areas of contrast enhancement, irregular margins, extracapsular tumor growth, and ascites. All benign and malignant ovarian tumors were correctly identified by the radiologists. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic utility of MR imaging in classifying ovarian tumors in children and adolescents as benign or malignant is promising and might aid in defining the indication for ovarian-sparing versus non-ovarian-sparing surgery. We recommend evaluating these tumors with MR imaging prior to deciding on surgical treatment
Alpha beta T-cell graft depletion for allogeneic HSCT in adults with hematological malignancies
We conducted a multicenter prospective single-arm phase 1/2 study that assesses the outcome of alpha beta T-cell depleted allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) of peripheral blood derived stem cells from matched related, or unrelated donors (10/10 and 9/10) in adults, with the incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) as the primary end point at day 100. Thirty-five adults (median age, 59; range, 19-69 years) were enrolled. Conditioning consisted of antithymocyte globulin, busulfan, and fludarabine, followed by 28 days of mycophenolic acid after allo-HSCT. The minimal follow-up time was 24 months. The median number of infused CD34(+) cells and alpha beta T cells were 6.1 x 10(6) and 16.3 x 10(3) cells per kg, respectively. The cumulative incidence (CI) of aGVHD grades 2-4 and 3-4 at day 100 was 26% and 14%. One secondary graft failure was observed. A prophylactic donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) (1 x 10(5) CD3(+) T cells per kg) was administered to 54% of the subjects, resulting in a CI of aGVHD grades 2-4 and 3-4 to 37% and 17% at 2 years. Immune monitoring revealed an early reconstitution of natural killer (NK) and gamma delta T cells. Cytomegalovirus reactivation associated with expansion of memory-like NK cells. The CI of relapse was 29%, and the nonrelapse mortality 32% at 2 years. The 2-year CI of chronic GVHD (cGVHD) was 23%, of which 17% was moderate. We conclude that only 26% of patients developed aGVHD 2-4 after alpha beta T-cell-depleted allo-HSCT within 100 days and was associated with a low incidence of cGVHD after 2 years. An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Forward pi^0 Production and Associated Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down
to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons
are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for
pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the
forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and
energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x.
Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events
containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD
models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the
data.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures and 3 table
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
