    Appropriate spatial sampling of rainfall for flow simulation

    The objective of this study is to find the appropriate number and location of raingauges for a river basin for flow simulation by using statistical analyses and hydrological modelling. First, a statistical method is used to identify the appropriate number of raingauges. Herein the effect of the number of raingauges on the cross-correlation coefficient between areally averaged rainfall and discharge is investigated. Second, a lumped HBV model is used to investigate the effect of the number of raingauges on hydrological modelling performance. The Qingjiang River basin with 26 raingauges in China is used for a case study. The results show that both cross-correlation coefficient and modelling performance increase hyperbolically, and level off after five raingauges (therefore identified to be the appropriate number of rain-gauges) for this basin. The geographical locations of raingauges which give the best and worst hydrological modelling performance are identified, which shows that there is a strong dependence on the local geographical and climatic patterns

    Arterial complications, venous thromboembolism and deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A systematic review

    AIM To summarize the current knowledge on vascular complications and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. METHODS A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, CINAHL, PubMed publisher, and Google scholar medical literature databases were searched up to November 10, 2015. Any arthroscopic surgical method of primary or revision intra-articular ACL reconstruction of all graft types in humans was included. A risk of bias assessment was determined. RESULTS Fourty-seven studies were included in the review. Pseudaneurysms were the most frequently reported arterial complication after ACL reconstruction, irrespective of graft type or method of graft fixation with an incidence of 0.3%. The time to diagnosis of arterial complications after ACL reconstruction varied from days to mostly weeks but even years. After ACL reconstruction without thromboprophylaxis, the incidence of DVT was 9.7%, of which 2.1% was symptomatic. The incidence of pulmonary embolism was 0.1%. Tourniquet time > 2 h was related to venous thromboembolism. Thromboprophylaxis is indicated in patients with risk factors for venous thromboembolism. CONCLUSION After ACL reconstruction, the incidence of arterial complications, symptomatic DVT and pulmonary embolism was 0.3%, 2.1% and 0.1% respectively. Arterial complications may occur with all types of arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, methods of graft fixation as well as any type of graft. Patients considered to be at moderate or high risk of venous thromboembolism should routinely receive thromboprophylaxis after ACL reconstruction

    The Duality of Technology: ICT as an enabler and inhibiter in Business Process improvement

    The improvement of business processes often depends on ICT, which can either facilitate or impede improvements. Yet it is not clear though to what extent ICT enables or inhibits business process improvement and what factors can explain this effect. Orlikowski’s duality of technology underscores the socio-historical context of technology and the dual nature of technology, as objective reality and as socially constructed product. In this article the duality of technology is used as the theoretical lens to analyze the interaction between ICT and business improvement using two case studies. Factors show the duality of technology by having an enabling or inhibiting effect depending on the situation. Some factors were found that can have either an enabling or inhibiting effect and this effect was found to be dependent on the context. This stresses the need for situational-specific understanding and taking into account the context

    Impact of Alkyl Chain Length on the Formation of Regular- and Reverse-Graded Quasi-2D Perovskite Thin Films

    Crystallization of low-dimensional perovskites is a complex process that leads to multidimensional films comprising two-dimensional (2D), quasi-2D, and three-dimensional (3D) phases. Most quasi-2D perovskite films possess a regular gradient with 2D phases located at the bottom of the film and 3D phases at the top. Recently, multiple studies have reported reverse-graded perovskite films, where the location of the 2D and 3D structures is inverted. The underlying reasons for such a peculiar phase distribution are unclear. While crystallization of regular-graded quasi-2D perovskites has been described as starting with 3D phases from the liquid-air interface, the film formation of reverse-graded films has not been investigated yet. Here, we examine the impact of the alkyl chain length on the formation of regular- and reverse-graded perovskites using n-alkylammonium ions. We find that long alkyl chains reverse the phase distribution gradient. By combining photoluminescence spectroscopy with in situ optical absorption measurements, we demonstrate that crystallization starts at the liquid-N2 interface, though as 3D phases for short-chain n-alkylammonium ions and as quasi-2D phases for long chains. We link this behavior to enhanced van der Waals interactions between long-chain n-alkylammonium ions in polar solvents and their tendency to accumulate at the liquid-N2 interface, creating a concentration gradient along the film thickness.</p

    Wave attenuation in mangrove forests; field data obtained in Trang, Thailand

    Mangroves thrive in sheltered intertidal areas in the tropics and sub-tropics. Due to this position at the interface between land and sea, mangroves play an important role in the attenuation of waves. Dissipation of wave energy in mangrove forests is an interesting feature from the viewpoint of coastal protection. Nevertheless, field data are sparse and modeling attempts reveal the need for additional data. This paper presents the results of an extensive field campaign, lasting 6 months, in mangroves along the Andaman coast of Trang Province in southern Thailand. Wave attenuation has been studied along two contrasting transects with different elevation and vegetation characteristics and different orientations towards the Andaman Sea. Along the Kantang transect, which is mostly exposed to swell waves, vegetation densities increased from 4.5 to 9.3 volume-‰ along the transect and on average 63% of the incident wave energy was attenuated over a distance of 246 m. Along the Palian transect, mostly exposed to sea waves instead, vegetation increased from 4.3 to 19 volume-‰ and 72% of the incident wave energy was attenuated over this 98 m transect. It was found that standardized wave attenuation correlates well with incident wave energy, when attenuation is analyzed per vegetation zone. Energy reduction rates of these zones, defined by the gradient of the correlations between the standardized wave attenuation and incident wave energy, are found to increase significantly with vegetation density. Consistently, wave reduction rates, expressing the gradient of the correlation between wave height reduction and incident wave heights, are found to be 0.001-0.014 for the study sites and also show a significant and increasing trend with vegetation densities

    Health care reform and financial crisis in the Netherlands:consequences for the financial arena of health care organizations

    Over the past decade, many health care systems across the Global North have implemented elements of market mechanisms while also dealing with the consequences of the financial crisis. Although effects of these two developments have been researched separately, their combined impact on the governance of health care organizations has received less attention. The aim of this study is to understand how health care reforms and the financial crisis together shaped new roles and interactions within health care. The Netherlands – where dynamics between health care organizations and their financial stakeholders (i.e., banks and health insurers) were particularly impacted – provides an illustrative case. Through semi-structured interviews, additional document analysis and insights from institutional change theory, we show how banks intensified relationship management, increased demands on loan applications and shifted financial risks onto health care organizations, while health insurers tightened up their monitoring and accountability practices towards health care organizations. In return, health care organizations were urged to rearrange their operations and become more risk-minded. They became increasingly dependent on banks and health insurers for their existence. Moreover, with this study, we show how institutional arenas come about through both the long-term efforts of institutional agents and unpredictable implications of economic and societal crises.<br/

    For better or worse:Governing healthcare organisations in times of financial distress

    Due to processes of financialisation, financial parties increasingly penetrate the healthcare domain and determine under which conditions care is delivered. Their influence becomes especially visible when healthcare organisations face financial distress. By zooming-in on two of such cases, we come to know more about the considerations, motives and actions of financial parties in healthcare. In this research, we were able to examine the social dynamics between healthcare executives, banks and health insurers involved in a Dutch hospital and mental healthcare organisation on the verge of bankruptcy. Informed by interviews, document analysis and translation theory, we reconstructed the motives and strategies of executives, banks and health insurers and show how they play a crucial role in decision-making processes surrounding the survival or downfall of healthcare organisations. While parties are bound by legislation and company procedures, the outcome of financial distress can still be influenced. Much depends on how executives are perceived by financial stakeholders and how they deal with threats of destabilisation of the network. We further draw attention to the consequences of financialisation processes on the practices of healthcare organisations in financial distress

    Quadruple junction polymer solar cells with four complementary absorber layers

    A monolithic two‐terminal solution‐processed quadruple junction polymer solar cell in an n–i–p (inverted) configuration with four complementary polymer:fullerene active bulk‐heterojunction layers is presented. The subcells possess different optical bandgaps ranging from 1.90 to 1.13 eV. Optical modeling using the transfer matrix formalism enables prediction of the fraction of absorbed photons from sunlight in each subcell and determine the optimal combination of layer thicknesses. The quadruple junction cell features an open‐circuit voltage of 2.45 V and has a power conversion efficiency of 7.6%, only slightly less than the modeled value of 8.2%. The external quantum efficiency spectrum, determined with appropriate light and voltage bias conditions, exhibits in general an excellent agreement with modeled spectrum. The device performance is presently limited by bimolecular recombination, which prevents using thick photoactive layers that could absorb light more efficiently
