INTRODUCTION The role of magnesium defi ciency in metabolic syndrome pathophysiology is one of the issue presently discussed in the literature. The others electrolyte disturbances in this syndrome are also the object of interest. The aim of the study was to analyze electrolyte equilibrium disorders in patients with metabolic syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 36 (29 females and 9 males) patients with metabolic syndrome hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Wards of District Hospitals in Blachownia and Paj臋czno and 29 (10 females and 19 males) healthy volunteers (control group). The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to IDF (2005) criteria. RESULTS In contrast to the sodium and potassium serum magnesium level was signifi cantly lower in patients with metabolic syndrome than in the control group. Moreover there was a negative serum magnesium correlation between waist circumference and body mass index among patients with metabolic syndrome. There were positive correlations between serum sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum potassium and triglycerides concentrations in the group with metabolic syndrome. The foregoing correlations were not found in the control group. CONCLUSIONS 1. Serum magnesium was significantly lower in patients with metabolic syndrome than in the control group. 2. The correlation between serum magnesium and waist circumference, body mass index shows the possible abdominal fatty tissue influence on magnesium equilibrium among patients with metabolic syndrome. 3. The positive correlation between serum sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure points the possible role of sodium in pathogenesis of hypertension in metabolic syndrome.WST臉P Jednym z problem贸w patofi zjologii zespo艂u metabolicznego dyskutowanym w aktualnym pi艣miennictwie jest rola niedoboru magnezu. Przedmiotem zainteresowania s膮 r贸wnie偶 inne zaburzenia elektrolitowe w tym zespole. Celem prezentowanego badania by艂a analiza zaburze艅 elektrolitowych u chorych z zespo艂em metabolicznym hospitalizowanych na oddzia艂ach chor贸b wewn臋trznych. MATERIA艁 I METODY Analizie poddano 36 (29 kobiet i 9 m臋偶czyzn) pacjent贸w hospitalizowanych w Oddziale Chor贸b Wewn臋trznych Szpitala w Blachowni i Paj臋cznie spe艂niaj膮cych kryteria zespo艂u metabolicznego oraz 29 (10 kobiet i 19 m臋偶czyzn) zdrowych ochotnik贸w (grupa kontrolna). Zesp贸艂 metaboliczny rozpoznawano na podstawie kryteri贸w International Diabetes Federation (IDF) z 2005 roku. WYNIKI W odr贸偶nieniu od sodu i potasu, st臋偶enie magnezu w surowicy u chorych z zespo艂em metabolicznym by艂o mniejsze ni偶 u os贸b zdrowych. Ponadto st臋偶enie magnezu w surowicy wykazywa艂o ujemn膮 korelacj臋 z obwodem talii oraz BMI badanych chorych. U os贸b obci膮偶onych zespo艂em metabolicznym wykazano dodatnie korelacje pomi臋dzy st臋偶eniami sodu oraz ci艣nieniem skurczowym i rozkurczowym, jak r贸wnie偶 mi臋dzy st臋偶eniem potasu i triacylogliceroli. Powy偶szych korelacji nie stwierdzono w grupie kontrolnej. WNIOSKI 1. St臋偶enie magnezu w surowicy chorych z zespo艂em metabolicznym jest znamiennie mniejsze ni偶 u os贸b zdrowych. 2.

The aim of the studywas to evaluate lung function among patients who underwent Nuss Procedure. The analysis included spirometric evaluation of the lung function before Nuss Procedure, during perioperative period and after removing steel bars from behind the sternum. Material and methods. The study group involved patients operated on the pectus excavatum in the Department of Thoracic Surgery in Pozna艅 in years 2002-2004. The study group consisted of 44 patients (5 females and 39 males). Aged between 10 to 32 years old, the mean age was 16. The following spirometric parameters were analysed: vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), FEV1/VC ratio, peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow for 25% (FEF25), 50% (FEF50) and 75% FVC (FEF75). Results. The values of the FVC, FEV1, FEF25, and FEV1/VC ratio in the study group were significantly higher in the postoperative period in comparison with the preoperative period. There was a statistically significant correlation between the improvement in spirometric parameters after Nuss Procedure and the impairment of spirometric values in preoperative period. There were no statistical differences between the value of initial chest deformation and spirometric parameters improvement. There were also no statistically significant correlations between age, height and weight of the patient in the study group and spirometric values improvement. Conclusion. There is a statistical improvement in lung function in patients who underwent Nuss Procedure. The improvement in spirometric parameters correlates with the impairment of spirometric values in the preoperative period
