Management of Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries in Overhead Athletes

    Get PDF
Ulnar collateral ligament injuries of the elbow are frequent among overhead athletes. The incidence of ulnar collateral ligament reconstructions (UCLRs) in high-level players has increased dramatically over the past decade, but the optimal technique of UCLR is controversial. Surgeons need to manage the patients’ expectations appropriately when considering the mode of treatment. This article reviews current studies on the management of ulnar collateral ligament injuries, particularly in overhead athletes

Predictive Solution for Radiation Toxicity Based on Big Data

    Get PDF
Radiotherapy is a treatment method using radiation for cancer treatment based on a patient treatment planning for each radiotherapy machine. At this time, the dose, volume, device setting information, complication, tumor control probability, etc. are considered as a single-patient treatment for each fraction during radiotherapy process. Thus, these filed-up big data for a long time and numerous patients’ cases are inevitably suitable to produce optimal treatment and minimize the radiation toxicity and complication. Thus, we are going to handle up prostate, lung, head, and neck cancer cases using machine learning algorithm in radiation oncology. And, the promising algorithms as the support vector machine, decision tree, and neural network, etc. will be introduced in machine learning. In conclusion, we explain a predictive solution of radiation toxicity based on the big data as treatment planning decision support system

Prediction of Cancer Patient Outcomes Based on Artificial Intelligence

    Get PDF
Knowledge-based outcome predictions are common before radiotherapy. Because there are various treatment techniques, numerous factors must be considered in predicting cancer patient outcomes. As expectations surrounding personalized radiotherapy using complex data have increased, studies on outcome predictions using artificial intelligence have also increased. Representative artificial intelligence techniques used to predict the outcomes of cancer patients in the field of radiation oncology include collecting and processing big data, text mining of clinical literature, and machine learning for implementing prediction models. Here, methods of data preparation and model construction to predict rates of survival and toxicity using artificial intelligence are described

Hydrauric Analysis On Water Stage Change Along The Submerged Weir And Tides Effect In Han River

Sinkok submerged weir in Han river, Seoul Korea was built in early 1980’s for the purpose of water level maintenance and protection from sea water intrusion from the estuary. Its length is almost 1 km and 2.4 meter height which has two composite structures of rigid and movable weir. Huge wetland developed as the results of weir construction just down to the weir. However, recently social conflicts for the weir removal occurred for the river rehabilitation and aqua-eco system recover. This study focused on hydraulic analysis, especially water level changes in terms of with and without submerged weir along the tides where the height has 9 meters difference between ebb and high tide. HEC-RAS for the 1-D simulation and SMS for 2-D analysis were used covering 25 km river length and tributaries. Tides time series records and discharge records from upstream dam of 1-year were and 2 submerged weirs as well as 25 bridges were considered in boundaries. Hydraulic data in the 4 gauging stations were collected for the model calibration. Water level changes were reviewed along 4 cases – with/without weir and flood/dry season - The results showed that more than 3 meter difference of water surface fluctuation along up and downstream including wetland as tide changes in a day. The wetland dimension and water quality were also affected along the water level. The contraction of wetland area might cause the changes of aqua habitat to plants and animals. These results make it difficult to make a decision of removal of the submerged weir. A comprehensive analysis of not only hydraulic but also water quality and environmental effect should be considered. Topographical measurement of the attachments of the central band of the interosseous membrane on interosseous crests of the radius and ulna

    Get PDF
Background To suggest a reasonable isometric point based on the anatomical consistency of interosseous membrane (IOM) attachment in association with topographic characteristics of the interosseous crests, the footprints of the central band (CB) of the IOM on the radial and ulnar interosseous crests (RIC and UIC) were measured. Methods We measured the distance from the CB footprints from each apex of both interosseous crests in 14 cadavers and the angles between the forearm axis of rotation (AOR) and the distal slopes of the RIC and UIC in 33 volunteers. Results The CB footprints lay on the downslope of both interosseous crests with its upper margin on average 3-mm proximal from the RIC's apex consistently in the radial length, showing normality (p>0.05), and on average 16-mm distal from the UIC's apex on the ulna without satisfying normality (p0.05), and there was no side-to-side difference in both forearms (p<0.05). Conclusions The CB attached to the downslope just distal to the RIC's apex constrains the radius to the UIC that coincides with the AOR of the forearm circumduction, maintaining itself both isometrically and isotonically

MMP-Inhibitory Effects of Flavonoid Glycosides from Edible Medicinal Halophyte Limonium tetragonum

    Get PDF
Limonium tetragonum has been well-known for its antioxidative properties as a halophyte. This study investigated the antimetastasis effect of solvent-partitioned L. tetragonum extracts (LTEs) and isolated compounds on HT1080 mouse melanoma cell model with a focus on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and TIMP and MAPK pathways. Upregulation and stimulation of MMPs result in elevated degradation of extracellular matrix which is part of several complications such as metastasis, cirrhosis, and arthritis. The anti-MMP capacity of LTEs was confirmed by their MMP-inhibitory effects, regulation of MMP and TIMP expression, and suppression of MAPK pathway. Among all tested LTEs, 85% aq. MeOH and n-BuOH were found to be most active fractions which later yielded two known flavonoid glycosides, myricetin 3-galactoside and quercetin 3-o-beta-galactopyranoside. Anti-MMP potential of the compounds was confirmed by their ability to regulate MMP expression through inhibited MAPK pathway activation. These results suggested that L. tetragonum might serve as a potential source of bioactive substances with effective anti-MMP properties

AbstractThis study investigated the plant distribution in Hajo Island, Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. The surveyed plants were recorded as total 483 taxa, 100 families, 298 genera, 427 species, 1 subspecies, 52 varieties, and 3 forms. Total 1,360 pieces were obtained as evidential specimen. Through floristic survey and collection in Hajo Island, Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, 1,360 items of specimen were obtained. Based on the specimen, the flora in Hajo Island included total 483 taxa, 100 families, 298 genera, 427 species, 1 subspecies, 52 varieties, and 3 forms. The investigation was carried out based on mountains (Mt. Dondae-bong, Mt. Songarak, and Mt. Singeum), reservoirs (Jodo reservoir, Yukdong reservoir), Hajodo lighthouse, and Jodo bridge. In particular, rare plants designated by Korea Forest Service were recorded as 12 taxa such as Glochidion chodoense, Crypsinus hastatus, Celtis choseniana, Ardisia crenata, Millettia japonica, etc. Endemic plants were recorded as 3 taxa such as Hepatica insularis, etc. Special plants over 3rd degree designated by the Ministry of Environment were recorded as 31 taxa such as Litsea japonica, Kadsura japonica, Raphiolepis indica var. umbellata, Verbena officinalis, Stauntonia hexaphylla, etc. Naturalized plants were recorded as 31 taxa, accounting for 6.4% of the total, such as Physalis angulata, Aster subulatus, Euphorbia supina, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Bromus unioloides, etc
