The study was undertaken to study the relationship between knowledge level and profile characteristics of pulses seed growers. A sample of 90 pulses seed growing farmers was selected from 3 blocks of Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu. The blocks were Kinathukadavu, Thondamuthur and Karamadai. For the study 30 farmers from each of the three blocks, where the highest number of farmers cultivating pulses for seed production were selected by employing simple random sampling technique in each block. Collection of data was done with the help of semi structured interview schedule. The study revealed that experience in seed production, social participation, urban contact and information seeking behaviour would increase the knowledge level of seed growers. The variables experience in seed production was contributing more than 75 per cent of the variation inthe knowledge level.

Technology Adoption Behaviour of Jasmine Growers – A Critical Analysis

Jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is one of the oldest fragrant flowers cultivated by man. The flower is used for various purposes viz., making garlands, bouquets, decorating hair of women, religious offerings etc. Scientific cultivation of jasmine is one of the important prerequisites for increasing the production and productivity among the jasmine growers. The technology adoption of jasmine cultivation by the jasmine growers has not received the attention of both the extension functionaries of State Department of Horticulture and Agriculture to the required level and hence, the present study was undertaken with the objective to study the adoption behavior of jasmine growers in Tiurnelveli District. Vallioor block of Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu was selected purposively for the study based on more area under jasmine cultivation with a sample size of 120. The respondents were selected based on proportionate random sampling method. The data were collected from each respondent through pre-tested interview schedule. The results of the study revealed that majority of the jasmine growers had adopted local variety (Ramanathapuram), pest management practices for blossom midge and bud worm, right time of harvest, application of inorganic fertilizers, water management, weed management and application of manure after pruning. One-third of the respondents had adopted the technologies like optimum spacing, application of FYM and root rot disease management. Based on the findings , the paper suggests concerted dissemination efforts by the change agents in the region, for improving jasmine productivit

Neonatal Intensive Care Units Nurses' Attitude Toward Advantages and Disadvantages of Open vs Closed Endotracheal Suction

    Get PDF
Background: The vital issue of protecting the airway and maintaining ventilation in preterm infants makes tracheal suctioning an important procedure. The decision to use closed or open endotracheal suction method depends on the clinical status of infants and the nurses’ skills and preferences. Objectives: The current study aimed to compare the two methods based on the perceptions of the nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Patients and Methods: A comparative-descriptive study carried out on 35 NICU nurses in Taleghani and Al-Zahra teaching hospitals in Tabriz, Iran, in 2013. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire (13 Items). Data analysis, including t-test was performed using SPSS Ver. 13. A P ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: According to the nurses’ point of view, there are differences between characteristics of open and closed endotracheal suctioning methods (P < 0.001). By using closed endotracheal suction, the risk of traumatizing airway, developing pneumonia, increasing intracranial pressure, prolonging emergency suctioning, developing intra-ventricular hemorrhage, blood stream infection, physiological instability and lowering positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) are reduced. Meanwhile, lower cost, lower risk of extubation, comfort and easy washing procedure were reported as advantages of open suction. Conclusion: Closed endotracheal suctioning was evaluated to be better than the open method in the preterm neonates. More studies, especially experimental and efficient cost analysis, are recommended

Fostering Physical Activity for Children and Youth: Opportunities for a Lifetime of Health

    Get PDF
Provides background research about the current state of physical activity in the nation and highlights organizational practices and public policies to improve physical activity among children and youth. The report serves as a launching pad for action for practitioners and advocates who are interested in engaging in systems and environmental change approaches in four key arenas: schools, early childcare and education settings, out-of-school-time programs, and communities.Commissioned by the Convergence Partnership, a national collaborative of health funders in the U.S., the report was informed by research and key informant interviews. Reflecting the Convergence Partnership's vision, the report's analysis of policy opportunities at the federal, state and local level emphasizes ways to ensure that health equity is at the forefront of collaborative efforts. This document is part of a larger strategy to identify high-impact approaches that will move the Convergence Partnership closer to the vision of healthy people in healthy places. In addition to this document, the Partnership has released other policy briefs on topics such as the built environment and access to healthy food

After 2001’s 9/11 attacks, public attitudes towards Muslims worsened, and concern increased about the perceived threat of Islamic radicalization in US prisons. But how has the news media portrayed Muslim prisoners in the US? In new research, which examines news reports over a 25 year period, Janani Umamaheswar finds that despite concerns over radicalization, newspapers tended to be nuanced and balanced in their coverage of Muslim inmates

D2-40 Positive Lymphatic Vasculature in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC): An Immunohistochemical study

    Get PDF
This immunohistochemical study comprised of a total of thirty five subjects in three groups: ten in metastatic OSCC (Group 1), fifteen in non metastatic OSCC (Group 2) and ten in control group (Group 3). D2-40 monoclonal antibody against lymphatic endothelial cells was used to study the lymphatic vessel density between the 3 groups. The conclusions of the study are: • D2-40 positivity is specific to lymphatic endothelial cells and absent in endothelial cells of blood vessels. • Lymphatic vessel density is higher in non metastatic OSCC group when compared to the control group (p=0.001). • Lymphatic vessel density is higher in the metastatic OSCC group when compared to the normal group (p=0.000). • Lymphatic vessel density is higher in the metastatic OSCC group when compared to non metastatic OSCC group (p=0.001). • Lymphatic vessel density is higher in metastatic OSCC group than non metastatic OSCC group which is in turn higher than the control group (p=0.000). • Lymphatic vessel density is higher, but not statistically significant in poorly differentiated and moderately differentiated OSCC when compared to well differentiated OSCC. • D2-40 stained the basal layer of the surface epithelium having. • sub epithelial inflammatory cell infiltrate and those adjacent to tumor islands. • D2-40 immunoreactivity was diffuse in poorly and moderately differentiated OSCC. It was restricted to the basal cells in well differentiated OSCC. Our results indicate that D2-40 has the potential to be a surrogate marker of OSCC aggressiveness because lymphatic vessel density and D2-40 positive reaction in cancer cells were associated with lymphatic vessel density. Thus, staining with D2-40 may be important in determining the prognosis of OSCC
