Crime and its perception in urban environment
Jana Jíchová: Crime and its Perception in Urban Environment ABSTRACT Crime is an important social phenomenon that affects many aspects of the functioning of society and the life of every person. It also represents an important interdisciplinary topic that deals with a number of disciplines, including geography. Logically, there is a thematic and methodological overlap; each of the sciences emphasize on different aspects of crime, using various methods and research approaches, interpretations, and therefore contributes to the knowledge of crime differently. The importance of geography is particularly in the enrichment of the crime research on spatial dimension and contributes to its cognition through analysis of the distribution of crime and studies of perception of crime. Although this type of studies is well established in Western crime research, in the Czech geography is paid to them only little attention. This doctoral thesis introduces geography of crime in the Czech context, discusses its theoretical and methodological developments and its applicability and application in our cities.. More emphasis is put on the concept of fear of crime, which constitutes an essential component of feeling of safety affecting daily life, the use of urban space and spatial mobility of individuals. Zároveň představuje významné interdisciplinární téma, kterému se věnuje řada oborů, včetně geografie. Logicky zde dochází k tematickým i metodickým přesahům; každá z věd klade důraz na odlišné aspekty kriminality, využívá jiných metod a výzkumných postupů, způsobů interpretace, a proto přispívá k poznání kriminality odlišně. Význam geografie spočívá zejména v obohacení výzkumu kriminality o prostorovou dimenzi, napomáhá k jejímu poznání prostřednictvím analýz rozmístění kriminality a studiemi percepce zločinu. Právě lepší pochopení diferencovaného vnímání zločinu různými skupinami obyvatel či uživatelů a...Department of Social Geography and Regional Develop.Katedra sociální geografie a region. rozvojeFaculty of SciencePřírodovědecká fakult
“And Did He Come to Pick You Up?”: Parental Control as an Invisible Barrier to the Spatial Behaviour of Daughters in Distant University Cities
Research on perceptions of security has long focused on exploring fear for oneself, but fear for other person, so-called altruistic fear, which can contribute significantly to the overall perception of security, is equally important. Fear for others is also related to the need for surveillance and control over those for whom we worry. This article focuses on the importance of transferred, spatially absent parental control for the perception of fear for daughters who moved from a small municipality to a large, distant university city. Through semi-structured interviews with female first and second year college students, we examine how their feelings of safety and danger in the new environment transformed during their transition to university, how parents approached their leaving home and how they communicated with their daughters, and how the parents continued to supervise them despite the spatial divide. Our analysis shows the different forms that the relationship between parental control and their daughter’s fear can take, and how fear for oneself can be interwoven with fear for others.Research on perceptions of security has long focused on exploring fear for oneself, but fear for other person, so-called altruistic fear, which can contribute significantly to the overall perception of security, is equally important. Perception of fear in Žižkov and Jarov
The main aim of this thesis is to discover how the inhabitants of Žižkov and Jarov perceive their place of residence in terms of the potentially risk places and safety. Following this aim the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used: questionnaire survey, interviews, statistical data analysis. The researches on fear of crime emphasize differentiation in the perception of fear by men and women and by various age groups, which is also reflected in this thesis. Further the focus is on identification of places which are often perceived as more hazardous and reasons which conduce to this perception. This research also tries to discover whether an overlap of places with higher incidence of crimes and localities which inhabitants perceive as the most hazardous exists. The thesis simultaneously brings closer the theme of fear and fear of crime, options to perceive living environment. The results proved that some localities, for example parks or deserted and deprived places, are perceived as hazardous. The research also pointed that women and some age groups strongly perceived the fear of crime and the overlap of places with higher incidence of crimes and localities perceived as dangerous exists. Kriminalita a její percepce ve vnitřním městě :případová studie pražského Žižkova a Jarova
The paper deals with residents’ perceptions of crime and safety using the example of two Prague inner city neighbourhoods - Žižkov and Jarov. Main focus is placed on the identification of crime hot spots and types of high-risk environments from the perspective of local residents. Attention is also paid to reasons that people associate with the existence of crime hot spots, and to a comparison of the perceived and real dangers of these places. The differences in the perceptions of various groups of residents are also noted. The paper thus continues a wider debate in scholarly literature discussing the impacts of demographic and environmental characteristics on perceived fear of crime.32934
