How Changes in Unemployment Benefit Duration Affect the Inflow into Unemployment

    Get PDF
We study how changes in the maximum benefit duration affect the inflow into unemployment in the Netherlands. Until August 2003, workers who became unemployed after age 57.5 were entitled to unemployment benefits until the age of 65, after which they would receive old age pensions. This characteristic made it attractive for workers to enter unemployment shortly after age 57.5 rather than shortly before. Indeed, we find a peak in the inflow into unemployment for workers after age 57.5. From August 2003 onwards the maximum benefit durations were reduced. We find that shortly after 2003 the peak in the inflow disappeared.unemployment inflow, potential benefit duration, unemployment insurance

There are only two nonobtuse binary triangulations of the unit nn-cube

Triangulations of the cube into a minimal number of simplices without additional vertices have been studied by several authors over the past decades. For 3≤n≤73\leq n\leq 7 this so-called simplexity of the unit cube InI^n is now known to be 5,16,67,308,14935,16,67,308,1493, respectively. In this paper, we study triangulations of InI^n with simplices that only have nonobtuse dihedral angles. A trivial example is the standard triangulation into n!n! simplices. In this paper we show that, surprisingly, for each n≥3n\geq 3 there is essentially only one other nonobtuse triangulation of InI^n, and give its explicit construction. The number of nonobtuse simplices in this triangulation is equal to the smallest integer larger than n!(e−2)n!({\rm e}-2).Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

Spatio-temporal coherent control of thermal excitations in solids

X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements of femtosecond laser-induced transient gratings are applied to demonstrate the spatio-temporal coherent control of thermally induced surface deformations on ultrafast timescales. Using gracing incidence X-ray diffraction we unambiguously measure the amplitude of transient surface deformations with sub-\AA{} resolution. Understanding the dynamics of femtosecond TG excitations in terms of superposition of acoustic and thermal gratings makes it possible to develop new ways of coherent control in X-ray diffraction experiments. Being the dominant source of TG signal, the long-living thermal grating with spatial period Λ\Lambda can be canceled by a second, time-delayed TG excitation shifted by Λ/2\Lambda/2. The ultimate speed limits of such an ultrafast X-ray shutter are inferred from the detailed analysis of thermal and acoustic dynamics in TG experiments

    COllective INtelligence with task assignment

In this paper we study the COllective INtelligence (COIN) framework of Wolpert et al. for dispersion games (Grenager, Powers and Shoham, 2002) and variants of the EL Farol Bar problem. These settings constitute difficult MAS problems where fine-grained coordination between the agents is required. We enhance the COIN framework to dramatically improve convergence results for MAS with a large number of agents. The increased convergence properties for the dispersion games are competitive with especially tailored strategies for solving dispersion games. The enhancements to the COIN framework proved to be essential to solve the more complex variants of the El Farol Bar-like problem
