Facilitating question identification through natural intensity eyebrow movements in virtual avatars
In conversation, recognizing social actions (similar to âspeech actsâ) early is important to quickly understand the speakerâs intended message and to provide a fast response. Fast turns are typical for fundamental social actions like questions, since a long gap can indicate a dispreferred response. In multimodal face-to-face interaction, visual signals may contribute to this fast dynamic. The face is an important source of visual signalling, and previous research found that prevalent facial signals such as eyebrow movements facilitate the rapid recognition of questions. We aimed to investigate whether early eyebrow movements with natural movement intensities facilitate question identification, and whether specific intensities are more helpful in detecting questions. Participants were instructed to view videos of avatars where the presence of eyebrow movements (eyebrow frown or raise vs. no eyebrow movement) was manipulated, and to indicate whether the utterance in the video was a question or statement. Results showed higher accuracies for questions with eyebrow frowns, and faster response times for questions with eyebrow frowns and eyebrow raises. No additional effect was observed for the specific movement intensity. This suggests that eyebrow movements that are representative of naturalistic multimodal behaviour facilitate question recognition
Occurrence of Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in a Sanitary Sewer System: Implications for Assessing Vapor Intrusion Alternative Pathways
Sewer systems have been recently recognized as potentially important exposure pathways to consider during vapor intrusion assessments; however, this pathway has not been well-characterized and there is need for additional information about the occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in sewer systems. This paper reports the results of sewer gas sampling conducted in a sanitary sewer over the years of 2014â2017. Sewer gas samples were collected and analyzed using several different techniques, including TO-15 (grab), TO-17 (passive), RadielloÂź (passive) and a novel continuous monitoring technique, the Autonomous Rugged Optical Multigas Analyzer (AROMA). The applicability of each of the different approaches used in this study is discussed in the context of investigating sanitary sewers as a vapor intrusion alternative pathway. The data confirmed that trichloroethylene (TCE) concentrations in sewer gas were detected adjacent to and extending hundreds of feet away from a previously defined vapor intrusion area, where TCE was a primary contaminant. TCE concentrations detected in sewer gas ranged from non-detect to 1600 ÎŒg/m3. Temporal variability was observed in TCE concentrations over timescales that ranged from minutes to months to years at discrete sampling locations. Spatial variability in sewer gas concentrations was also observed throughout the study area. Temporal and spatial variability may be caused by groundwater contamination sources in the study area, as well as sewer gas transport mechanisms
Twin wall of cubic-tetragonal ferroelastics
We derive solutions for the twin wall linking two tetragonal variants of the
cubic-tetragonal ferroelastic transformation, including for the first time the
dilatational and shear energies and strains. Our solutions satisfy the
compatibility relations exactly and are obtained at all temperatures. They
require four non-vanishing strains except at the Barsch-Krumhansl temperature
TBK (where only the two deviatoric strains are needed). Between the critical
temperature and TBK, material in the wall region is dilated, while below TBK it
is compressed. In agreement with experiment and more general theory, the twin
wall lies in a cubic 110-type plane. We obtain the wall energy numerically as a
function of temperature and we derive a simple estimate which agrees well with

Contemporary outcomes of complete atrioventricular septal defect repair: Analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database
ObjectiveContemporary outcomes data for complete atrioventricular septal defect (CAVSD) repair are limited. We sought to describe early outcomes of CAVSD repair across a large multicenter cohort, and explore potential associations with patient characteristics, including age, weight, and genetic syndromes.MethodsPatients in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database having repair of CAVSD (2008-2011) were included. Preoperative, operative, and outcomes data were described. Univariate associations between patient factors and outcomes were described.ResultsOf 2399 patients (101 centers), 78.4% had Down syndrome. Median age at surgery was 4.6 months (interquartile range, 3.5-6.1 months), with 11.8% (n = 284) aged â€2.5 months. Median weight at surgery was 5.0 kg (interquartile range, 4.3-5.8 kg) with 6.3% (n = 151) < 3.5 kg. Pulmonary artery band removal at CAVSD repair was performed in 122 patients (4.6%). Major complications occurred in 9.8%, including permanent pacemaker implantation in 2.7%. Median postoperative length of stay (PLOS) was 8 days (interquartile range, 5-14 days). Overall hospital mortality was 3.0%. Weight < 3.5 kg and age †2.5 months were associated with higher mortality, longer PLOS, and increased frequency of major complications. Patients with Down syndrome had lower rates of mortality and morbidities than other patients; PLOS was similar.ConclusionsIn a contemporary multicenter cohort, most patients with CAVSD have repair early in the first year of life. Prior pulmonary artery band is rare. Hospital mortality is generally low, although patients at extremes of low weight and younger age have worse outcomes. Mortality and major complication rates are lower in patients with Down syndrome
