Collective action initiatives to improve marketing performance: Lessons from farmer groups in Tanzania
"The primary inquiry of this study is to identify and understand the underlying factors that enable smallholder farmer groups to improve their market situation. The specific objective of this paper is to examine to what extent certain group characteristics and asset endowments facilitate collective action initiatives to improve group marketing performance. This objective is approached through an evaluation of a government-led program in Tanzania, which is attempting to increase smallholder farmers' incomes and food security through a market-oriented intervention. Findings suggest that more mature groups with strong internal institutions, functioning group activities, and a good asset base of natural capital are more likely to improve their market situation. Gender composition of groups also factors in group marketing performance. It acts as an enabling factor for male-dominated groups and as a disabling factor for female-only groups. Examining Community College Student Experiences with and Attitudes Toward Collaboration in Online Courses
This research examined the experiences and attitudes of community college students toward using collaboration in online courses, as guided by four research questions: 1) What do community college students report as their experiences with collaboration in online courses regarding types and frequency of collaboration tools used? 2) What is the level of community college student agreement with how collaboration in online courses is helpful? 3) What is the level of community college student agreement with what inhibits collaboration in online courses? and 4) What are community college student attitudes toward collaboration in online courses? Data were collected with a quantitative survey completed by 73 community college students who were enrolled in at least one online course the previous semester.Findings revealed self-reported collaboration experiences in online courses primarily involved participation in discussion boards and email communications. Results showed that most students agreed collaboration helped increase achievement and build social skills for a successful career, and that most participants disagreed with factors that may inhibit collaboration in online courses. When examining participant attitudes toward collaboration in online courses, findings yielded the following outcomes: best things about working together in online courses were gaining a better understanding of course content and feeling a sense of community; worst things were low participation of other students, insufficient communication, poorly organized collaborative activities, and lack of community. When asked if they would like more collaboration opportunities in online courses, most participants replied no, citing a desire to work alone; while those who wanted additional opportunity indicated a desire for community and better understanding of content. Furthermore, when asked what they would change about collaboration activities in online courses, most participants indicated that they would change nothing. The findings of this research have implications for those who develop online courses and/or professional development for higher education faculty who teach online courses with regard to implementing effective collaborative strategies that can help students and instructors work together to achieve learning, improve retention, and better prepare students for the future
Mitigating Cotton Revenue Risk Through Irrigation, Insurance, and Hedging
This study focuses on managing cotton production and marketing risks using combinations of irrigation levels, put options (as price insurance), and crop insurance. Stochastic cotton yields and prices are used to simulate a whole-farm financial statement for a 1,000 acre furrow irrigated cotton farm in the Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley under 16 combinations of risk management strategies. Analyses for risk-averse decision makers indicate that multiple irrigations are preferred. The benefits to purchasing put options increase with yields, as they are more beneficial when higher yields are expected from applying more irrigation applications. Development of a Reliable Surgical Quality Assurance System for 2-stage Esophagectomy in Randomized Controlled Trials
Objective: The aim was to develop a reliable surgical quality assurance system for 2-stage esophagectomy. This development was conducted during the pilot phase of the multicenter ROMIO trial, collaborating with international experts. Summary of Background Data: There is evidence that the quality of surgical performance in randomized controlled trials influences clinical outcomes, quality of lymphadenectomy and loco-regional recurrence. Methods: Standardization of 2-stage esophagectomy was based on structured observations, semi-structured interviews, hierarchical task analysis, and a Delphi consensus process. This standardization provided the structure for the operation manual and video and photographic assessment tools. Reliability was examined using generalizability theory. Results: Hierarchical task analysis for 2-stage esophagectomy comprised fifty-four steps. Consensus (75%) agreement was reached on thirty-nine steps, whereas fifteen steps had a majority decision. An operation manual and record were created. A thirty five-item video assessment tool was developed that assessed the process (safety and efficiency) and quality of the end product (anatomy exposed and lymphadenectomy performed) of the operation. The quality of the end product section was used as a twenty seven-item photographic assessment tool. Thirty-one videos and fifty-three photographic series were submitted from the ROMIO pilot phase for assessment. The overall Gcoefficient for the video assessment tool was 0.744, and for the photographic assessment tool was 0.700. Conclusions: A reliable surgical quality assurance system for 2-stage esophagectomy has been developed for surgical oncology randomized controlled trials

Robert “Bob” Harris (1926-1998), of Lancaster, South Carolina, spent decades researching the genealogical history of the Harris family, dating back to Essex, England in the 1500s, and various branches thereof. The collection includes extensive notes, family trees, correspondence, and photocopies of original documents, such as wills and deeds, from the 1700s and 1800s. Mr. Harris, along with distant relatives and various correspondents from around the country, searched government records, archives, church records, newspapers and a variety of other sources to compile a significant collection of data pertaining to the history of various lines of Harris descendants. There are many family names mentioned in the collection, some only briefly and others more extensively. Loss-of-function mutations in TNFAIP3 leading to A20 haploinsufficiency cause an early-onset autoinflammatory disease
Systemic autoinflammatory diseases are driven by abnormal activation of innate immunity. Herein we describe a new disease caused by high-penetrance heterozygous germline mutations in TNFAIP3, which encodes the NF-B regulatory protein A20, in six unrelated families with early-onset systemic inflammation. The disorder resembles Behçet\u27s disease, which is typically considered a polygenic disorder with onset in early adulthood. A20 is a potent inhibitor of the NF-B signaling pathway. Mutant, truncated A20 proteins are likely to act through haploinsufficiency because they do not exert a dominant-negative effect in overexpression experiments. Patient-derived cells show increased degradation of IBα and nuclear translocation of the NF-B p65 subunit together with increased expression of NF-B-mediated proinflammatory cytokines. A20 restricts NF-B signals via its deubiquitinase activity. In cells expressing mutant A20 protein, there is defective removal of Lys63-linked ubiquitin from TRAF6, NEMO and RIP1 after stimulation with tumor necrosis factor (TNF). NF-B-dependent proinflammatory cytokines are potential therapeutic targets for the patients with this disease
PaLM: Scaling Language Modeling with Pathways
Large language models have been shown to achieve remarkable performance
across a variety of natural language tasks using few-shot learning, which
drastically reduces the number of task-specific training examples needed to
adapt the model to a particular application. To further our understanding of
the impact of scale on few-shot learning, we trained a 540-billion parameter,
densely activated, Transformer language model, which we call Pathways Language
Model PaLM. We trained PaLM on 6144 TPU v4 chips using Pathways, a new ML
system which enables highly efficient training across multiple TPU Pods. We
demonstrate continued benefits of scaling by achieving state-of-the-art
few-shot learning results on hundreds of language understanding and generation
benchmarks. On a number of these tasks, PaLM 540B achieves breakthrough
performance, outperforming the finetuned state-of-the-art on a suite of
multi-step reasoning tasks, and outperforming average human performance on the
recently released BIG-bench benchmark. A significant number of BIG-bench tasks
showed discontinuous improvements from model scale, meaning that performance
steeply increased as we scaled to our largest model. PaLM also has strong
capabilities in multilingual tasks and source code generation, which we
demonstrate on a wide array of benchmarks. We additionally provide a
comprehensive analysis on bias and toxicity, and study the extent of training
data memorization with respect to model scale. Finally, we discuss the ethical
considerations related to large language models and discuss potential
mitigation strategies
Profiles of Parental Burnout Around the Globe: Similarities and Differences Across 36 Countries
Parental burnout (PB) is a pervasive phenomenon. Parenting is embedded in cultural values, and previous research has shown the role of individualism in PB. In this paper, we reanalyze previously collected data to identify profiles based on the four dimensions of PB, and explore whether these profiles vary across countries’ levels of collectivistic-individualistic (COL-IND) values. Our sample comprised 16,885 individuals from 36 countries (73% women; 27% men), and we used a latent profile approach to uncover PB profiles. The findings showed five profiles: Fulfilled, Not in PB, Low risk of PB, High risk of PB and Burned out. The profiles pointed to climbing levels of PB in the total sample and in each of the three country groups (High COL/Low IND, Medium COL-IND, Low COL/High IND). Exploratory analyses revealed that distinct dimensions of PB had the most prominent roles in the climbing pattern, depending on the countries’ levels of COL/IND. In particular, we found contrast to be a hallmark dimension and an indicator of severe burnout for individualistic countries. Contrary to our predictions, emotional distance and saturation did not allow a clear differentiation across collectivistic countries.
