    Angular Momentum Mixing in Crystalline Color Superconductivity

    In crystalline color superconductivity, quark pairs form at non-zero total momentum. This crystalline order potentially enlarges the domain of color superconductivity in cold dense quark matter. We present a perturbative calculation of the parameters governing the crystalline phase and show that this is indeed the case.     Concentration of anti-MĂŒllerian hormone in dairy heifers is positively associated with productive herd life

    Reliable biomarkers predictive of productive herd life (time in herd after birth of first calf) have heretofore not been discovered in dairy cattle. However, circulating concentrations of anti-MĂŒllerian hormone (AMH) are positively associated with number of follicles or antral follicle count (AFC), ovarian function, and fertility, and approximately 25% of cows have a relatively low AFC and low AMH concentrations. The present study tested the hypothesis that heifers with the lowest AMH concentrations have suboptimal fertility and are removed from a herd for poor reproductive performance at a greater rate, and therefore have a shorter productive herd life compared with age-matched herdmates with higher AMH. To test this hypothesis, 11- to 15-mo-old Holstein heifers (n=281) were subjected to a single measurement of AMH. All heifers not removed from the herd had the opportunity to complete 2 lactations and start their third lactation after calving. During this time, performance and health parameters for each individual were recorded daily by herd managers. Results showed that the quartile of heifers with the lowest AMH concentration also had, on average, a shorter productive herd life (by 196 d), a reduced survival rate after birth of the first calf, the lowest level of milk production (first lactation), the lowest total percentage of cows pregnant (across all lactations), the highest culling rates (first and second lactations and overall), and the highest culling rate for poor reproduction (first lactation) compared with age-matched herdmates with higher AMH. We concluded that a single determination of AMH concentration in young adult dairy heifers may be a simple diagnostic method to predict herd longevity, and AMH may be a useful phenotypic marker to improve longevity of dairy cows

    Lutetium incorporation in magmas at depth:changes in melt local environment and the influence on partitioning behaviour

    International audienceThe structure of two Lu doped (4000 ppm) model end member silicate liquids, a highly polymerised haplogranite (Si-Al-Na-K-O) and a less polymerised anorthite-diopside (Si-Al-Mg-Ca-O), have been studied up to 8 GPa using in situ x-ray diffraction techniques. The results are the first to identify trace rare Earth element incorporation in silicate melts at high pressure. At pressures below 5 GPa, the bonding environment of Lu-O was found to be dependent on composition with coordination number CN Lu−O = 8 and bond distance r Lu−O = 2.36Å36Å in the haplogranite melt, decreasing to CN Lu−O = 6 and r Lu−O = 2.29Å29Å in the anorthite-diopside melt. This compositional variance in coordination number at low pressure is consistent with observations made for Y-O in glasses at ambient conditions and is coincident with a dramatic increase in the partition coefficients previously observed for rare Earth elements with increasing melt polymerisation. With increasing pressure we find that CN Lu−O and r Lu−O remain constant in the haplo-granite melt. However, an abrupt change in both Lu-O coordination and bond distance is observed at 5 GPa in the anorthite-diopside melt, with CN Lu−O increasing from 6 to 8-fold and r Lu−O from 2.29 to 2.39Å39Å. This occurs over a similar pressure range where a change in the P-dependence in the reported rare Earth element partition coefficients is observed for garnet-, clinopyroxene-, and olivine-melt systems. This work shows that standard models for predicting trace elements at depth must incorporate the effect of pressure-induced structural transformations in the melt in order to realistically predict partitioning behaviour

    The Isgur-Wise function in a relativistic model for qQˉq\bar Q system

    We use the Dirac equation with a ``(asymptotically free) Coulomb + (Lorentz scalar) linear '' potential to estimate the light quark wavefunction for qQˉ q\bar Q mesons in the limit mQ→∞m_Q\to \infty. We use these wavefunctions to calculate the Isgur-Wise function Ο(v.vâ€Č)\xi (v.v^\prime ) for orbital and radial ground states in the phenomenologically interesting range 1≀v.vâ€Č≀41\leq v.v^ \prime \leq 4. We find a simple expression for the zero-recoil slope, Οâ€Č(1)=−1/2−ϔ2/3\xi^ \prime (1) =-1/2- \epsilon^2 /3, where Ï”\epsilon is the energy eigenvalue of the light quark, which can be identified with the Λˉ\bar\Lambda parameter of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. This result implies an upper bound of −1/2-1/2 for the slope Οâ€Č(1)\xi^\prime (1). Also, because for a very light quark q(q=u,d)q (q=u, d) the size \sqrt {} of the meson is determined mainly by the ``confining'' term in the potential (Îłâˆ˜Ïƒr)(\gamma_\circ \sigma r), the shape of Οu,d(v.vâ€Č)\xi_{u,d}(v.v^\prime ) is seen to be mostly sensitive to the dimensionless ratio Λˉu,d2/σ\bar \Lambda_{u,d}^2/\sigma. We present results for the ranges of parameters 150MeV<Λˉu,d<600MeV150 MeV <\bar \Lambda_{u,d} <600 MeV (Λˉs≈Λˉu,d+100MeV)(\bar\Lambda_s \approx \bar\Lambda_{u,d}+100 MeV), 0.14GeV2≀σ≀0.25GeV20.14 {GeV}^2 \leq \sigma \leq 0.25 {GeV}^2 and light quark masses mu,md≈0,ms=175MeVm_u, m_d \approx 0, m_s=175 MeV and compare to existing experimental data and other theoretical estimates. Fits to the data give: Λˉu,d2/σ=4.8±1.7{\bar\Lambda_{u,d}}^2/\sigma =4.8\pm 1.7 , −Οu,dâ€Č(1)=2.4±0.7-\xi^\prime_{u,d}(1)=2.4\pm 0.7 and ∣VcbâˆŁÏ„B1.48ps=0.050±0.008\vert V_{cb} \vert \sqrt {\frac {\tau_B}{1.48 ps}}=0.050\pm 0.008 [ARGUS '93]; Λˉu,d2/σ=3.4±1.8{\bar\Lambda_{u,d}}^2/\sigma = 3.4\pm 1.8, −Οu,dâ€Č(1)=1.8±0.7-\xi^\prime_{u,d}(1)=1.8\pm 0.7 and ∣VcbâˆŁÏ„B1.48ps=0.043±0.008\vert V_{cb} \vert \sqrt { \frac {\tau_B}{1.48 ps}}=0.043\pm 0.008 [CLEO '93]; ${\bar\Lambda_{u,d}}^2/Comment: 22 pages, Latex, 4 figures (not included) available by fax or via email upon reques

    Development of an Integrated Survey Vehicle for Measuring Pavement Surface Conditions at Highway Speeds, Volume I: Technical Report

    DTFH61-85-C-00172The objective of this study was to develop an integrated survey vehicle for measuring pavement surface conditions at highway speeds. This was accomplished by determining the requirements and operating characteristics for such a system, preparing a design, and estimating initial and operating costs. This volume contains a review of the data and measurement needs for pavement condition surveys. The equipment available and under development for this purpose are identified with emphasis on measurements at highway speeds. Three potential survey vehicle designs are presented: the first uses off-the-shelf components, the second uses state-of-the-art components, while the third anticipates the addition of equipment still in development. The final design that was selected incorporates all three types of equipment. A complete, detailed design for the vehicle and the test equipment was prepared and each subpart discussed. Operating procedures for the survey vehicle are established and given in this report

    High-Pressure Transformation of SiO2 Glass from a Tetrahedral to an Octahedral Network:A Joint Approach Using Neutron Diffraction and Molecular Dynamics

    International audienceA combination of in situ high-pressure neutron diffraction at pressures up to 17.5(5) GPa and moleculardynamics simulations employing a many-body interatomic potential model is used to investigate thestructure of cold-compressed silica glass. The simulations give a good account of the neutron diffractionresults and of existing x-ray diffraction results at pressures up to ∌60 GPa. On the basis of the moleculardynamics results, an atomistic model for densification is proposed in which rings are “zipped” by a pairingof five- and/or sixfold coordinated Si sites. The model gives an accurate description for the dependence ofthe mean primitive ring size hni on the mean Si-O coordination number, thereby linking a parameter that issensitive to ordering on multiple length scales to a readily measurable parameter that describes the localcoordination environment

    Search for Rare and Forbidden 3-body Di-muon Decays of the Charmed Mesons D+ and Ds+

    Using a high statistics sample of photo-produced charm particles from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report results of a search for eight rare and Standard-Model-forbidden decays: D+, Ds+ > h+/- muon-/+ muon+ (with h=pion or Kaon). Improvement over previous results by a factor of 1.7--14 is realized. Our branching ratio upper limit D+ > pion+ muon- muon+ of 8.8E-6 at the 90% C.L. is below the current MSSM R-Parity violating constraint.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure file

    N-body simulations of gravitational dynamics

    We describe the astrophysical and numerical basis of N-body simulations, both of collisional stellar systems (dense star clusters and galactic centres) and collisionless stellar dynamics (galaxies and large-scale structure). We explain and discuss the state-of-the-art algorithms used for these quite different regimes, attempt to give a fair critique, and point out possible directions of future improvement and development.
