Lens magnification by CL0024+1654 in the U and R band
[ABRIDGED] We estimate the total mass distribution of the galaxy cluster
CL0024+1654 from the measured source depletion due to lens magnification in the
R band. Within a radius of 0.54Mpc/h, a total projected mass of
(8.1+/-3.2)*10^14 M_sol/h (EdS) is measured, which corresponds to a mass-
to-light ratio of M/L(B)=470+/-180. We compute the luminosity function of
CL0024+1654 in order to estimate contamination of the background source counts
from cluster galaxies. Three different magnification-based reconstruction
methods are employed using both local and non-local techniques. We have
modified the standard single power-law slope number count theory to incorporate
a break and applied this to our observations. Fitting analytical magnification
profiles of different cluster models to the observed number counts, we find
that the cluster is best described either by a NFW model with scale radius
r_s=334+/-191 kpc/h and normalisation kappa_s=0.23+/-0.08 or a power-law
profile with slope xi=0.61+/-0.11, central surface mass density
kappa_0=1.52+/-0.20 and assuming a core radius of r_core=35 kpc/h. The NFW
model predicts that the cumulative projected mass contained within a radius R
scales as M(<R)=2.9*10^14*(R/1')^[1.3-0.5lg (R/1')] M_sol/h. Finally, we have
exploited the fact that flux magnification effectively enables us to probe
deeper than the physical limiting magnitude of our observations in searching
for a change of slope in the U band number counts. We rule out both a total
flattening of the counts with a break up to U_AB<=26.6 and a change of slope,
reported by some studies, from dlog N/dm=0.4->0.15 up to U_AB<=26.4 with 95%

Exploring the feasibility and acceptability of a sleep wearable headband among a community sample of chronic pain individuals: An at-home observational study
Background
Chronic pain conditions affect up to one third of the adult population in the United Kingdom. Sleep problems are prevalent and negatively impact quality of life. Lack of standardised tools for routine screening and assessment of sleep changes have been a barrier for sleep management. Novel sleep wearables offer an exciting and accessible way to measure sleep but have not been tested outside of the consumer-led landscape and are not commonly used in research and clinical settings.
Aims
The study aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of a sleep monitoring headband (Dreem 2) utilising EEG technology and accompanying smartphone application among a cohort of adults with chronic pain.
Results
Twenty-one adults (81% women) completed a one-week home sleep study using a sleep headband and accompanying app. Ninety per cent of participants met the pre-defined requirement of two-night's sleep recording. All participants recorded one night of sleep data via the sleep headband. The majority (76%) of participants were satisfied with the sleep study, and 86% of participants were willing to wear the headband longer than the 2-night minimum requirement. Finally, 76% reported the headband as âsomewhatâ or âextremelyâ comfortable whist awake; 57% rated the headband as comfortable during sleep.
Conclusion
The Dreem 2 headband appears to be a feasible and acceptable means of collecting sleep measurements among individuals with chronic pain, despite common sleep disturbances. These devices may have utility for screening, assessment and monitoring in research and practice. Further research is needed to provide guidelines and training for integration
The Radio Afterglow and Host Galaxy of the Dark GRB 020819
Of the fourteen gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) localized to better than 2' radius
with the SXC on HETE-2, only two lack optical afterglow detections, and the
high recovery rate among this sample has been used to argue that the fraction
of truly dark bursts is ~10%. While a large fraction of earlier dark bursts can
be explained by the failure of ground-based searches to reach appropriate
limiting magnitudes, suppression of the optical light of these SXC dark bursts
seems likely. Here we report the discovery and observation of the radio
afterglow of GRB 020819, an SXC dark burst, which enables us to identify the
likely host galaxy (probability of 99.2%) and hence the redshift (z=0.41) of
the GRB. The radio light curve is qualitatively similar to that of several
other radio afterglows, and may include an early-time contribution from the
emission of the reverse shock. The proposed host is a bright R = 19.5 mag
barred spiral galaxy, with a faint R ~ 24.0 mag "blob'' of emission, 3" from
the galaxy core (16 kpc in projection), that is coincident with the radio
afterglow. Optical photometry of the galaxy and blob, beginning 3 hours after
the burst and extending over more than 100 days, establishes strong upper
limits to the optical brightness of any afterglow or associated supernova.
Combining the afterglow radio fluxes and our earliest R-band limit, we find
that the most likely afterglow model invokes a spherical expansion into a
constant-density (rather than stellar wind-like) external environment; within
the context of this model, a modest local extinction of A_V ~ 1 mag is

A monument to the player: Preserving a landscape of socio-cultural capital in the transitional MMORPG

Despite the persistent nature of these games, however, the virtual spaces that anchor these worlds may not always be able to exist in perpetuity. Encouraging a community to migrate from one space to another is a challenge now facing some game developers. This paper examines the case of Guild WarsÂź and its âHall of Monumentsâ, a feature that bridges the accomplishments of players from the current game to the forthcoming sequel. Two factor analyses describe the perspectives of 105 and 187 self-selected participants. The results reveal four factors affecting attitudes towards the feature, but they do not strongly correlate with existing motivational frameworks, and significant differences were found between different cultures within the game. This informs a discussion about the implications and facilitation of such transitions, investigating themes of capital, value perception and assumptive worlds. It is concluded that the way subcultures produce meaning needs to be considered when attempting to preserve the socio-cultural landscape

The early X-ray afterglows of optically bright and dark Gamma-Ray Bursts
A systematical study on the early X-ray afterglows of both optically bright
and dark gamma-ray bursts (B-GRBs and D-GRBs) observed by Swift has been
presented. Our sample includes 25 GRBs. Among them 13 are B-GRBs and 12 are
D-GRBs. Our results show that the distributions of the X-ray afterglow fluxes
(), the gamma-ray fluxes (), and the ratio ()
for both the D-GRBs and B-GRBs are similar. The differences of these
distributions for the two kinds of GRBs should be statistical fluctuation.
These results indicate that the progenitors of the two kinds of GRBs are the
same population. Their total energy explosions are comparable. The suppression
of the optical emissions from D-GRBs should results from circumburst but not

The optical afterglow of the short gamma-ray burst GRB 050709
It has long been known that there are two classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs),
mainly distinguished by their durations. The breakthrough in our understanding
of long-duration GRBs (those lasting more than ~2 s), which ultimately linked
them with energetic Type Ic supernovae, came from the discovery of their
long-lived X-ray and optical afterglows, when precise and rapid localizations
of the sources could finally be obtained. X-ray localizations have recently
become available for short (duration <2 s) GRBs, which have evaded optical
detection for more than 30 years. Here we report the first discovery of
transient optical emission (R-band magnitude ~23) associated with a short
burst; GRB 050709. The optical afterglow was localized with subarcsecond
accuracy, and lies in the outskirts of a blue dwarf galaxy. The optical and
X-ray afterglow properties 34 h after the GRB are reminiscent of the afterglows
of long GRBs, which are attributable to synchrotron emission from
ultrarelativistic ejecta. We did not, however, detect a supernova, as found in
most nearby long GRB afterglows, which suggests a different origin for the

A New Constraint on the Escape Fraction in Distant Galaxies Using Gamma-ray Burst Afterglow Spectroscopy
We describe a new method to measure the escape fraction fesc of ionizing
radiation from distant star-forming galaxies using the afterglow spectra of
long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Optical spectra of GRB afterglows allow
us to evaluate the optical depth of the host ISM, according to the neutral
hydrogen column density N(HI) observed along the sightlines toward the
star-forming regions where the GRBs are found. Different from previous effort
in searching for faint, transmitted Lyman continuum photons, our method is not
subject to background subtraction uncertainties and does not require prior
knowledge of either the spectral shape of the host galaxy population or the IGM
Lya forest absorption along these GRB sightlines. Because most GRBs occur in
sub-L_* galaxies, our study also offers the first constraint on fesc for
distant low-mass galaxies that dominate the cosmic luminosity density. We have
compiled a sample of 27 GRBs at redshift z>2 for which the underlying N(HI) in
the host ISM are known. These GRBs together offer a statistical sampling of the
integrated optical depth to ionizing photons along random sightlines from
star-forming regions in the host galaxies, and allow us to estimate the mean
escape fraction averaged over different viewing angles. We find
=0.02\pm 0.02 and place a 95% c.l. upper limit <= 0.075 for these
hosts. We discuss possible biases of our approach and implications of the
result. Finally, we propose to extend this technique for measuring at

Cerebrospinal fluid proteomics targeted for central nervous system processes in bipolar disorder
The etiopathology of bipolar disorder is largely unknown. We collected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from two independent case-control cohorts (total nâ=â351) to identify proteins associated with bipolar disorder. A panel of 92 proteins targeted towards central nervous system processes identified two proteins that replicated across the cohorts: the CSF concentrations of testican-1 were lower, and the CSF concentrations of C-type lectin domain family 1 member B (CLEC1B) were higher, in cases than controls. In a restricted subgroup analysis, we compared only bipolar type 1 with controls and identified two additional proteins that replicated in both cohorts: draxin and tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 21 (TNFRSF21), both lower in cases than controls. This analysis additionally revealed several proteins significantly associated with bipolar type 1 in one cohort, falling just short of replicated statistical significance in the other (tenascin-R, disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 23, cell adhesion molecule 3, RGM domain family member B, plexin-B1, and brorin). Next, we conducted genome-wide association analyses of the case-control-associated proteins. In these analyses, we found associations with the voltage-gated calcium channel subunit CACNG4, and the lipid-droplet-associated gene PLIN5 with CSF concentrations of TNFRSF21 and CLEC1B, respectively. The reported proteins are involved in neuronal cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, particularly in the developing brain, and in pathways of importance for lithiumâs mechanism of action. In summary, we report four novel CSF protein associations with bipolar disorder that replicated in two independent case-control cohorts, shedding new light on the central nervous system processes implicated in bipolar disorder
