Effect of Aqueous Ozone on the NF-κB System
Ozone has been proposed as an alternative oral antiseptic in dentistry, due to its antimicrobial power reported for gaseous and aqueous forms, the latter showing a high biocompatibility with mammalian cells. New therapeutic strategies for the treatment of periodontal disease and apical periodontitis should consider not only antibacterial effects, but also their influence on the host immune response. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effect of aqueous ozone on the NF-κB system, a paradigm for inflammationassociated signaling/transcription. We showed that NF-κB activity in oral cells stimulated with TNF, and in periodontal ligament tissue from root surfaces of periodontally damaged teeth, was inhibited following incubation with ozonized medium. Under this treatment, IκBalpah proteolysis, cytokine expression, and κB-dependent transcription were prevented. Specific ozonized amino acids were shown to represent major inhibitory components of ozonized medium. In summary, our study establishes a condition under which aqueous ozone exerts inhibitory effects on the NF-κB system, suggesting that it has an antiinflammatory capacity
First principles structures and circular dichroism spectra for the close-packed and the 7/2 motif of collagen
The recently proposed close-packed motif for collagen is investigated using
first principles semi-empirical wave function theory and Kohn-Sham density
functional theory. Under these refinements the close-packed motif is shown to
be stable. For the case of the 7/2 motif a similar stability exists. The
electronic circular dichroism of the close-packed model has a significant
negative bias and a large signal. An interesting feature of the close-packed
structure is the existence of a central channel. Simulations show that, if
hydrogen atoms are placed in the cavity, a chain of molecular hydrogens is

Leukotrienes provide an NFAT-dependent signal that synergizes with IL-33 to activate ILC2s.
Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and type 2 helper T cells (Th2 cells) are the primary source of interleukin 5 (IL-5) and IL-13 during type 2 (allergic) inflammation in the lung. In Th2 cells, T cell receptor (TCR) signaling activates the transcription factors nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), and activator protein 1 (AP-1) to induce type 2 cytokines. ILC2s lack a TCR and respond instead to locally produced cytokines such as IL-33. Although IL-33 induces AP-1 and NF-κB, NFAT signaling has not been described in ILC2s. In this study, we report a nonredundant NFAT-dependent role for lipid-derived leukotrienes (LTs) in the activation of lung ILC2s. Using cytokine reporter and LT-deficient mice, we find that complete disruption of LT signaling markedly diminishes ILC2 activation and downstream responses during type 2 inflammation. Type 2 responses are equivalently attenuated in IL-33- and LT-deficient mice, and optimal ILC2 activation reflects potent synergy between these pathways. These findings expand our understanding of ILC2 regulation and may have important implications for the treatment of airways disease

Fortunately, Wisconsin foundations are rebounding from the recent economic downturn. While the total number of active foundations (1301) decreased slightly from 2011’s high number, 57 new foundations were identified and two key measures show positive growth. Total assets increased by 12% from last year to over 490 million, close to pre-recession totals. Investigation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and room temperature skyrmions in W/CoFeB/MgO thin films and microwires
Recent studies have shown that material structures, which lack structural
inversion symmetry and have high spin-orbit coupling can exhibit chiral
magnetic textures and skyrmions which could be a key component for next
generation storage devices. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) that
stabilizes skyrmions is an anti-symmetric exchange interaction favoring
non-collinear orientation of neighboring spins. It has been shown that material
systems with high DMI can lead to very efficient domain wall and skyrmion
motion by spin-orbit torques. To engineer such devices, it is important to
quantify the DMI for a given material system. Here we extract the DMI at the
Heavy Metal (HM) /Ferromagnet (FM) interface using two complementary
measurement schemes namely asymmetric domain wall motion and the magnetic
stripe annihilation. By using the two different measurement schemes, we find
for W(5 nm)/Co20Fe60B20(0.6 nm)/MgO(2 nm) the DMI to be 0.68 +/- 0.05 mJ/m2 and
0.73 +/- 0.5 mJ/m2, respectively. Furthermore, we show that this DMI stabilizes
skyrmions at room temperature and that there is a strong dependence of the DMI
on the relative composition of the CoFeB alloy. Finally we optimize the layers
and the interfaces using different growth conditions and demonstrate that a
higher deposition rate leads to a more uniform film with reduced pinning and
skyrmions that can be manipulated by Spin-Orbit Torques
MicroRNA regulation of type 2 innate lymphoid cell homeostasis and function in allergic inflammation.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) exert powerful effects on immunity through coordinate regulation of multiple target genes in a wide variety of cells. Type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are tissue sentinel mediators of allergic inflammation. We established the physiological requirements for miRNAs in ILC2 homeostasis and immune function and compared the global miRNA repertoire of resting and activated ILC2s and T helper type 2 (TH2) cells. After exposure to the natural allergen papain, mice selectively lacking the miR-17∼92 cluster in ILC2s displayed reduced lung inflammation. Moreover, miR-17∼92-deficient ILC2s exhibited defective growth and cytokine expression in response to IL-33 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin in vitro. The miR-17∼92 cluster member miR-19a promoted IL-13 and IL-5 production and inhibited expression of several targets, including SOCS1 and A20, signaling inhibitors that limit IL-13 and IL-5 production. These findings establish miRNAs as important regulators of ILC2 biology, reveal overlapping but nonidentical miRNA-regulated gene expression networks in ILC2s and TH2 cells, and reinforce the therapeutic potential of targeting miR-19 to alleviate pathogenic allergic responses
Study on Arctic Mining in Greenland
The Arctic region has a huge business potential and offers many possibilities, but to some extent, Arctic markets are not very familiar to most companies. It is therefore important to provide information about the markets, their characteristics and the operating context. This report gives an overview of the mining market and context in Greenland.
Mining activities have so far been limited in Greenland considering the potential. A relatively weak record of mining activity appears to contrast with the metal endowment and existence of numerous mineral occurrences and several world class mineral deposits.
Mineral exploration and mining in Greenland often occur in remote areas, usually far from existing infrastructure. This necessitates expensive transportation and establishment infrastructure. The remoteness, harsh Arctic climate and rugged terrain are negative factors often resulting in extra expenditures compared to most other jurisdictions.
The many deep fjords in Greenland offer excellent opportunities for deep-sea port and shipping capacity. The social license to operate is in general very favourable in Greenland, and an ambitious new mineral strategy can be instrumental to attract new investments to mining in Greenland. Currently, Greenland is undergoing a phase of rapid development, and large government-funded infrastructure projects are in progress including new airports.

Epitaxial film growth and magnetic properties of Co_2FeSi
We have grown thin films of the Heusler compound Co_2FeSi by RF magnetron
sputtering. On (100)-oriented MgO substrates we find fully epitaxial
(100)-oriented and L2_1 ordered growth. On Al_2O_3 (11-20) substrates, the film
growth is (110)-oriented, and several in-plane epitaxial domains are observed.
The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a power law with
an exponent of 7/2 at low temperatures. Investigation of the bulk magnetic
properties reveals an extrapolated saturation magnetization of 5.0 mu_B/fu at 0
K. The films on Al_2O_3 show an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, while the
epitaxial films are magnetically isotropic in the plane. Measurements of the
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism of the films allowed us to determine element
specific magnetic moments. Finally we have measured the spin polarization at
the surface region by spin-resolved near-threshold photoemission and found it
strongly reduced in contrast to the expected bulk value of 100%. Possible
reasons for the reduced magnetization are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure
