Background: College students experience a period of uncertainty and statements that are strongly influenced by models of new behavior patterns found in the university. Poor eating habits are a major public health concern among college students who experience transition into university life, during which they are exposed to stress and lack of time. Objective: To examine the comparative analysis of food consumption pattern and body mass index of university residential students. Methods: Descriptive research design was adopted. The sample for the study (556 students: 278 male and 278 female) was drawn from the population of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques (fishbowl without replacement) were used to draw the sample from the population. A self-structured questionnaire on food consumption pattern (FCP) was administered for the study. Pearson product moment coefficient and multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: The result of the correlation analysis showed that nearly all the variables considered for the study had significant positive/negative correlation except for FFS (family financial status) and FCP4 (vegetables). The regression analysis showed the significant composite contribution of FCP to BMI (F(11,544)=2.44, p < .05) with 22% of predictors accounting for variance in the criterion variable (R=.217). Conclusion: Therefore, the study concluded that food consumption pattern of residential university students is a critical factor that requires close attention of all the stakeholders. Recommendation: It is therefore recommended that the campaign for nutritional guidelines Nutrition society should be extended to the higher institution of learning community

PHARMACOGNOSTIC STUDIES AND ANTIINFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES OF CLERODENDRUM VOLUBILE P Beauv LEAF

Get PDF
Clerodendrum volubile P Beauv (Verbenaceae) is a climbing shrub used traditionally in the treatment of swelling, gout and venereal diseases. In this study, the microscopic, macroscopic, phytochemical analysis and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated using standard procedures. The results revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, anthraquinone and cardiac glycoside while the methanol extract, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate fractions exhibited significant (p<0.05) anti-inflammatory activities when compared to the effect of the reference drug Diclofenac sodium

Influence of Gender and Leg Dominance on Q-angle Among Young Adult Nigerians

The quadriceps femoris muscle angle (Q-angle) is a known index of knee function and patellofemoral kinetics. This study reports normal values of the Q-angle measured bilaterally in a sample of young adult Nigerians aged 17 - 30 years and the influence of leg dominance and gender on the Q-angle. Four hundred healthy volunteers (200 males and 200 females) with no history of musculoskeletal pathology that could influence the Q-angle participated in the study, using the non-probability sample of convenience. The Q-angle was measured using a universal goniometer with the subject in the erect weight-bearing position. Results showed that in the male subjects, the Q-angles were 12.30 ± 4.0E and 10.38 ± 3.49E for the right and left lower limbs respectively, while in the female subjects, the Q-angles were 17.06 ± 3.64E and 14.84 ± 3.47E for the right and left lower limbs respectively. Analysis revealed a significant contra-lateral difference. Generally, the right Q-angle was significantly higher than the left (p< 0.05) in both the male and female subjects. The females had significantly higher Q-angles than their male counterparts (p< 0.05). Leg dominance did not have a significant influence (p > 0.05), as the right Q-angle was higher than the left in subjects with right leg dominance as well as those with left leg dominance. From these results, the assumption that Q-angles in the right and left limbs are equal is contending, and it is therefore recommended that measures of Q-angles should be documented as either right or left in the clinics as well as in research reports. KEY WORDS: Q-angle, leg dominance, gender influenc

The antidiabetic potentials of the methanol extract of Parkia biglobosa seed (Mimosoideae), its chloroform, hexane, and mother liquor fractions were evaluated in glucose-loaded and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The methanol extract of the seed exhibited a peak percentage decrease of 64% and 44.1% in blood glucose levels of the glucose-loaded and alloxan-induced diabetic rats respectively. The blood glucose lowering effect of the chloroform fraction (65.7%;

ANTI-AGING AND THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF EXERCISE PARTICIPATION AMONG THE UNIVERSITY STAFF MEMBERS

This study is a survey to find out the knowledge ofanti-aging and therapeutic effects of exercise participation among the University staff members. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study while self-structured modified questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. The purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the sample from the target population. The total of two hundred and seventeen (217) respondents participated in the study forming the sample size for the study. The statistical tools used for the study includes the mean, standard deviation, percent counts, frequency and chi-square contingency table. The hypothesis for thestudy was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the findings showed that there is a significant level of association between the knowledge of anti-aging and level of exercise participation among the members of staff of University of Ibadan

Durable Remission with Immunotherapy in a Patient with Sarcomatoid Renal Cell Carcinoma

Get PDF
Sarcomatoid differentiation is a rare and aggressive histologic subtype with poor prognosis, seen in several malignancies. In sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the degree of sarcomatoid differentiation and the stage at presentation determines the prognosis. Despite resection, chemotherapy and targeted therapy response is modest, with relapse usually occurring within a few months. We present a case of a gentleman with sarcomatoid RCC managed with pembrolizumab, who has had no evidence of recurrence for over 4 years since the last dose of immunotherapy. RCCs with sarcomatoid differentiation have a high presence of programmed cell death protein 1 and programmed cell death ligand 1 in T cells and tumor cells, respectively, making immunotherapy an attractive option in this setting. Clinical trials are ongoing to further define the benefit of immunotherapy in sarcomatoid RCC

EFFECT OF EIGHT WEEKS INTERVAL TRAINING PROGRAM ON THE SELECTED PERFORMANCE RELATED VARIABLES OF UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PLAYERS

Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of eight weeks interval training program on the speed and leg power of University football players. The variables investigated were age, weight, height, jump height, speed and leg power. One group pretest-posttest experimental study design were employed for the study. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested in the study. Twenty-two random selected University of Ibadan soccer players formed the sample for the study. Data collected were analyzed using the means, standard deviation and significance difference between the pretest-posttest main variables were determined using paired t-test. The alpha level was set at 0.05 level. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the interval training program increases the speed and jump height of the soccer players significantly but the leg power did not improve following the eight weeks of training session. Therefore it was recommended that the plyometric exercises in the training program should be modified in further studies for improved power performance
