Error Characteristics of Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)

Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is a 100 megabits per second fiber optic local area network (LAN) standard being developed by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI). We analyze the impact of various design decisions on the error detection capability of the protocol. In particular, we quantify frame error rate, token loss rate, and undetected error rate. Several characteristics of the 32-bit frame check sequence (FCS) polynomial, which is also used in IEEE 802 LAN protocols, are discussed

A Comparison of Hashing Schemes for Address Lookup in Computer Networks

Using a trace of address references, we compared the efficiency of several different hashing functions, such as cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) polynomials, Fletcher checksum, folding of address octets using the exclusive-or operation and bit extraction from the address. Guidelines are provided for determining the size of the hashmark required to achieve a specified level of performance

Yoga, Christians Practicing Yoga, and God: On Theological Compatibility, or Is There a Better Question?

Houston is a wildly diverse city; nonetheless it should come as no surprise that the Houston Chronicle “Belief” section frequently features stories about church expansions or declines, pastoral developments, and other reports on Christian communities. Christians, after all, make up over 70% of the city’s population. A provocative cover of a 2011 Belief section, however, shed light on a very different face of religion in Houston. The cover featured an image of local yoga teacher and entrepreneur Jennifer Buergermeister donning fashionable yoga attire and in the posture of a South Asian goddess, complete (thanks to clever photography) with six arms. The headline read, “THE SOUL OF YOGA.” In the article, journalist Shellnutt quotes Buergermeister on how yoga helped her connect with “God as a creator, as a source” and brought her “closer to my divinity.” Another local yoga teacher and entrepreneur, Roger Rippy, was also interviewed for the article and is quoted denying that yoga is a religion because it is not based in dogma, but it is, nonetheless, “about your own particular practice and your own particular relationship with God.”

The role of magnetic fields in the scattering of p-modes

Aims. We determine the direct and indirect effects of magnetic field on p-mode scattering. Methods. We solve a set of magnetohydrodynamic equations using the Born approximation to determine phase shifts in p-modes due to a region of inhomogeneity. The region of inhomogeneity is a magnetic flux tube with the characteristics of flaring field lines. This enables us to investigate the magnetic field effects on the phase shifts. Results. The magnetic configuration of our flux tube model plays a vital role in the phase shifts of p-modes. The suppression of sound speed and pressure within the flux tube region is not the only factor to consider in the scattering of p-modes. There is a direct effect of the magnetic fields caused by the flaring of field lines on phase shifts

Two-dimensional electron system in high magnetic fields: Wigner crystal vs. composite-fermion liquid

The two dimensional system of electrons in a high magnetic field offers an opportunity to investigate a phase transition from a quantum liquid into a Wigner solid. Recent experiments have revealed an incipient composite fermion liquid in a parameter range where theory and many experiments had previously suggested the Wigner crystal phase, thus calling into question our current understanding. This Letter shows how very small quantitative corrections (< 1%) in the energy due to the weak interaction between composite fermions can cause a fundamental change in the nature of the ground state, thus providing insight into the puzzling experimental results.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
