    Degeneracies when only T=1 two-body interactions are present

    In the nuclear f_7/2 shell, the nucleon-nucleon interaction can be represented by the eight values E(J)=, J=0,1,...,7, where for even J the isospin is 1, and for odd J it is 0. If we set the T=0 (odd J) two-body matrix elements to 0 (or to a constant), we find several degeneracies which we attempt to explain in this work. We also give more detailed expressions than previously for the energies of the states in question. New methods are used to explain degeneracies that are found in {45}Ti (I=25/2- and 27/2-), {46}V (I=12^+_1 and 13^+_1, as well as I=13^+_2 and 15+), and {47}V (I=29/2- and 31/2-).Comment: 21 pages; RevTeX4.     Breeding latitude predicts timing but not rate of spring migration in a widespread migratory bird in South America

    Identifying the processes that determine avian migratory strategies in different environmental contexts is imperative to understanding the constraints to survival and reproduction faced by migratory birds across the planet. We compared the spring migration strategies of Fork‐tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus s. savana) that breed at south‐temperate latitudes (i.e., austral migrants) vs. tropical latitudes (i.e., intratropical migrants) in South America. We hypothesized that austral migrant flycatchers are more time‐selected than intratropical migrants during spring migration. As such, we predicted that austral migrants, which migrate further than intratropical migrants, will migrate at a faster rate and that the rate of migration for austral migrants will be positively correlated with the onset of spring migration. We attached light‐level geolocators to Fork‐tailed Flycatchers at two tropical breeding sites in Brazil and at two south‐temperate breeding sites in Argentina and tracked their movements until the following breeding season. Of 286 geolocators that were deployed, 37 were recovered ~1 year later, of which 28 provided useable data. Rate of spring migration did not differ significantly between the two groups, and only at one site was there a significantly positive relationship between date of initiation of spring migration and arrival date. This represents the first comparison of individual migratory strategies among conspecific passerines breeding at tropical vs. temperate latitudes and suggests that austral migrant Fork‐tailed Flycatchers in South America are not more time‐selected on spring migration than intratropical migrant conspecifics. Low sample sizes could have diminished our power to detect differences (e.g., between sexes), such that further research into the mechanisms underpinning migratory strategies in this poorly understood system is necessary.Fil: Jahn, Alex.     HD DVD substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis : fabrication, theoretical predictions and practical performance

    Commercial HD DVDs provide a characteristic structure of encoding pits which were utilized to fabricate cost efficiently large area SERS substrates for chemical analysis. The study targets the simulation of the plasmonic structure of the substrates and presents an easily accessible fabrication process to obtain highly sensitive SERS active substrates. The theoretical simulation predicted the formation of supermodes under optimized illumination conditions, which were verified experimentally. First tests of the developed SERS substrates demonstrated their excellent potential for detecting vitamin A and pro- vitamin A at low concentration levels

    Arctic sea ice melt onset favored by an atmospheric pressure pattern reminiscent of the North American-Eurasian Arctic pattern

    The timing of melt onset in the Arctic plays a key role in the evolution of sea ice throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn. A major catalyst of early melt onset is increased downwelling longwave radiation, associated with increased levels of moisture in the atmosphere. Determining the atmospheric moisture pathways that are tied to increased downwelling longwave radiation and melt onset is therefore of keen interest. We employed Self Organizing Maps (SOM) on the daily sea level pressure for the period 1979–2018 over the Arctic during the melt season (April–July) and identified distinct circulation patterns. Melt onset dates were mapped on to these SOM patterns. The dominant moisture transport to much of the Arctic is enabled by a broad low pressure region stretching over Siberia and a high pressure over northern North America and Greenland. This configuration, which is reminiscent of the North American-Eurasian Arctic dipole pattern, funnels moisture from lower latitudes and through the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Other leading patterns are variations of this which transport moisture from North America and the Atlantic to the Central Arctic and Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Our analysis further indicates that most of the early and late melt onset timings in the Arctic are strongly related to the strong and weak emergence of these preferred circulation patterns, respectively

    Development of toxicity indices for assessing the quality of the Illinois River

    Individual toxicant concentrations in the Illinois River were expressed as fractions of their 96-hr LC50 values to bluegills, yielding their component toxicities in bluegill toxic units (BGTU’s). A solution having a toxicity of 1.0 BGTU was defined as being lethal to 50 percent of the bluegills exposed to it for 96 hr. River toxicants included aldrin, undissociated ammonia (ammonia₍ᵤ₎), arsenic, cadmium, hexavalent and trivalent chromium, copper, cyanide, fluoride, linear alkylate sulfonate (LAS), lead, mercury, phenols, and zinc. Component toxicities at different locations on the river were summed to produce the toxicity index, or total toxicity, of the river. Preliminary mean toxicity indices developed from previously published data during 1972 and 1973 ranged from 0.045 to 0.168 BGTU's, on the Illinois and Des Plaines rivers. However, maximum component toxicities of ammonia₍ᵤ₎ and cyanide during this period reached 0.630 and 0.467 BGTU's, respectively. LAS, copper, fluoride, and zinc also contributed to the preliminary river toxicity indices. Mean toxicity indices developed during field tests, in which bluegills were exposed directly to river water, and the lack of mortality at these tests, indicated that the Illinois River is not normally acutely toxic to fish. The 96-hr LC50 values of ammonia₍ᵤ₎ and LAS to bluegills were found to be 1.65 and 6.5 mg/liter, respectively, using continuous-flow bioassays with dilution water similar in hardness, alkalinity and pH to Illinois River water.U.S. Department of the InteriorU.S. Geological SurveyOpe

    First IBEX observations of the terrestrial plasma sheet and a possible disconnection event

    The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission has recently provided the first all-sky maps of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) emitted from the edge of the heliosphere as well as the first observations of ENAs from the Moon and from the magnetosheath stagnation region at the nose of the magnetosphere. This study provides the first IBEX images of the ENA emissions from the nightside magnetosphere and plasma sheet. We show images from two IBEX orbits: one that displays typical plasma sheet emissions, which correlate reasonably well with a model magnetic field, and a second that shows a significant intensification that may indicate a near-Earth (similar to 10 R(E) behind the Earth) disconnection event. IBEX observations from similar to 0.5-6 keV indicate the simultaneous addition of both a hot (several keV) and colder (similar to 700 eV) component during the intensification; if IBEX directly observed magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail, the hot component may signify the plasma energization

    Extraction of the active acceptor concentration in (pseudo-) vertical GaN MOSFETs using the body-bias effect

    We report and discuss the performance of an enhancement mode n-channel pseudo-vertical GaN metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). The trench gate structure of the MOSFET is uniformly covered with an Al₂O₃ dielectric and TiN electrode material, both deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Normally-off device operation is demonstrated in the transfer characteristics. Special attention is given to the estimation of the active acceptor concentration in the Mg doped body layer of the device, which is crucial for the prediction of the threshold voltage in terms of device design. A method to estimate the electrically active dopant concentration by applying a body bias is presented. The method can be used for both pseudo-vertical and truly vertical devices. Since it does not depend on fixed charges near the channel region, this method is advantageous compared to the estimation of the active doping concentration from the absolute value of the threshold voltage

    Boundary theories of critical matchgate tensor networks

    Key aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence can be captured in terms of tensor network models on hyperbolic lattices. For tensors fulfilling the matchgate constraint, these have previously been shown to produce disordered boundary states whose site-averaged ground state properties match the translation-invariant critical Ising model. In this work, we substantially sharpen this relationship by deriving disordered local Hamiltonians generalizing the critical Ising model whose ground and low-energy excited states are accurately represented by the matchgate ansatz without any averaging. We show that these Hamiltonians exhibit multi-scale quasiperiodic symmetries captured by an analytical toy model based on layers of the hyperbolic lattice, breaking the conformal symmetries of the critical Ising model in a controlled manner. We provide a direct identification of correlation functions of ground and low-energy excited states between the disordered and translation-invariant models and give numerical evidence that the former approaches the latter in the large bond dimension limit. This establishes tensor networks on regular hyperbolic tilings as an effective tool for the study of conformal field theories. Furthermore, our numerical probes of the bulk parameters corresponding to boundary excited states constitute a first step towards a tensor network bulk-boundary dictionary between regular hyperbolic geometries and critical boundary states

    Statics and dynamics of an incommensurate spin order in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet CdCr2_2O4_4

    Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering we show that a cubic spinel, CdCr2_2O4_4, undergoes an elongation along the c-axis (c>a=bc > a = b) at its spin-Peierls-like phase transition at TNT_N = 7.8 K. The N\'{e}el phase (T<TNT < T_N) has an incommesurate spin structure with a characteristic wave vector \textbf{Q}M_M = (0,δ\delta,1) with δ\delta \sim 0.09 and with spins lying on the acac-plane. This is in stark contrast to another well-known Cr-based spinel, ZnCr2_2O4_4, that undergoes a c-axis contraction and a commensurate spin order. The magnetic excitations of the incommensurate N\'{e}el state has a weak anisotropy gap of 0.6 meV and it consists of at least three bands extending up to 5 meV.Comment: PRL in pres
