The deep plan as an engine of modernity in Barcelona s residential buildings. 1930-1970

[EN] The large building depth is a remarkable feature of the housing building of the historical urban fabric of Barcelona and is one of the elements that most characterize the identity of the city. The article investigates the influence of the deep-plan in the housing building of the second modernity, focusing on the difference between permanence and transformations The deep plan was originally a response to the high demand for housing, but it turns into a structural law that becomes a common ground for the architects of the second modernity on which they experiment and introduce innovations in the arrangement of spaces. The deep plan has syntactic meaning in the plan layout arrangement. The overlapping of innovative theories, connections with another cultural environment as Milan, and professional practice turned into a figure with a semantic meaning.Lucchini, M.; Jaen I Urban, G. Since 1949, when Catalan culture has begun to recover from the disasters of the Civil War, Barcelona looked to Milan as a reference for modernising its architecture. Contacts between the architects from both cities were constant, the solutions proposed mutually influenced them and the result is one of the best episodes in both Italian and Catalan building design in the 20th Century. As an example to illustrate this relationship we compare three buildings from Milan and three from Barcelona

Crossed Destinies: the Tectonic and Modern Architecture in Barcelona During 50s-60s

[EN] The tectonic as theoretical subject was carried on in the nineteenth century in the context of German culture and concerns the relationship between form and construction, focusing on the analysis of the correspondences between the constructive and static needs and the intents addressed to aesthetics. In Barcelona, oppressed by Francoism during the 50s and 60s, the will to be modern was expressed to a considerable extent through the reinvention of a language characterised by a successful synthesis between modernity and attention to local culture. Therefore the tectonic is an investigative tool that links the culture of Barcelona s design with the broader koinè of modernity that has made tectonic one of its fundamentals. As in Italo Calvino's novel "The Castle of crossed destines" where different tales intersect, and the tellers are prompted by the symbols of a pack of cards so even in Barcelona the representative strength of Architecture interweaves with theoretical texts about tectonic providing a wider horizon to understand Barcelona architecture in the modern age.Lucchini, M.; Jaen I Urban, G.
