    Marriage, Specialization, and the Gender Division of Labor

    A customary gender division of labor is one in which women and men are directed towards certain tasks and/or explicitly prohibited from performing others. We offer an explanation as to why the gender division of labor is so often enforced by custom, and why customary gender divisions of labor generally involve both direction and prohibition. Our model builds on the literature on the marital hold-up problem, and considers both problems in choice of specialty and human capital acquisition in a framework in which agents learn a variety of skills and must search for a marriage partner on the marriage market. We show that wasteful behavior may emerge due to strategic incentives in career choice and human capital acquisition, and that both problems may be mitigated through the customary gender division of labor. We find, however, that a gender division of labor is not Pareto-improving; one gender is made worse off. Both the distributional effects and welfare gains to a customary gender division of labor decrease as opportunities to exchange in markets increase.

    In pre-modern societies the residence of a newly-wedded couple is often decided by custom. We formulate a theory of optimal post-marital residence rules based on contracting problems created by the nature of pre-marriage human capital investments. We argue that a fixed post-marital residence rule may mitigate a hold-up problem by specifying marriage terms and limiting possibilities for renegotiation; the trade-off is that the rule may prohibit beneficial renegotiation of post-marital location. A point of interest of our approach is that the magnitude and direction of transfers accompanying marriage are endogenous. We apply our theoretical results to understanding cross-cultural post-marital residence patters. Our theory stems from contracting problems created by the nature of pre-marriage human capital investments. We argue that a fixed post-marital residence rule may solve a hold-up problem by specifying marriage terms and limiting possibilities for renegotiation; the trade-off is the rule may prohibit beneficial renegotiation of post-marital location. We compare alternative residence rules (or lack thereof) under different degrees of location specificity of human capital and environmental uncertainty. We apply our theoretical results to Murdock's (1967) 862-society data set, augmented with climate data. We find some predictive ability in variables related to outside options, control over the environment, and potential degree of social control.

As a result, this research aims to investigate the high pressure structure and transport properties of these materials in a effort to better understand why they behave as they do.     Peptide processing via silk-inspired spinning enables assembly of multifunctional protein alloy fibers

    Diverse fiber-forming proteins are found in nature that accomplish a wide range of functions including signaling, cell adhesion, and mechanical support. Unique sequence characteristics of these proteins often lead to their specialized roles. However, these proteins also share a common organizational hierarchy in primary and secondary structures that strongly influence both their intramolecular folding and intermolecular interactions. Based on what is known regarding protein fiber assembly of silk peptides, shear-induced elongation of the molecular strands drives interchain secondary structure crystallization via anisotropic alignment, which creates a molecular superstructure that forms the basis a fiber network. In this work, the hypothesis is this type of protein fiber assembly is not unique to silk sequences and that other proteins can be spun into fibers in similar fashion while maintaining unique functionality given by their specialized amino acid sequences such as RGD, GX1X2, and so forth. This was investigated by modeling the manner in which hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks of amino acids create interacting secondary structures at the chain level when exposed to shear. It was determined computationally and then verified experimentally that fiber spinning success is most likely to occur after shear processing if the protein sequence exhibits a balance of hydrophobic and hydrophilic content and has sufficient length. Applied to the biological scale, both pure and mixed solutions of proteins such as fibronectin, laminin, and silk fibroin were spun into fibers. In particular, alloy protein fibers of silk fibroin mixed with fibronectin exhibited the characteristic mechanical integrity of silk and the bioactivity of fibronectin. This simple method of creating protein fibers with hybrid characteristics is significantly faster, less expensive, and less technically intensive than chimeric protein production, which purports to do the same. This finding also provides insight into a fundamental means by which protein fibers may be assembled in vivo by taking advantage of the thermodynamically favorable assembly of peptide sequences at the chain level under proper molecular orientation. Taken together, a high throughput means of producing a wide-range of pure and hybrid protein fibers has been developed for various biological applications and research investigations into the fibrous elements of biology

    Silk-fibronectin protein alloy fibres support cell adhesion and viability as a high strength, matrix fibre analogue

    Silk is a natural polymer with broad utility in biomedical applications because it exhibits general biocompatibility and high tensile material properties. While mechanical integrity is important for most biomaterial applications, proper function and integration also requires biomaterial incorporation into complex surrounding tissues for many physiologically relevant processes such as wound healing. In this study, we spin silk fibroin into a protein alloy fibre with whole fibronectin using wet spinning approaches in order to synergize their respective strength and cell interaction capabilities. Results demonstrate that silk fibroin alone is a poor adhesive surface for fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells in the absence of serum. However, significantly improved cell attachment is observed to silk-fibronectin alloy fibres without serum present while not compromising the fibres' mechanical integrity. Additionally, cell viability is improved up to six fold on alloy fibres when serum is present while migration and spreading generally increase as well.     ‘The Wandering Adolescent of Contemporary Japanese Anime and Videogames’

    PhDThis thesis examines the figure of the wandering adolescent, prominently visible in Japanese television anime and videogames produced from 1995 to the present. Japan in the 1990s and at the millennium experienced intense economic and social change, as the collapse of the 'bubble' economy of the 1980s resulted in a financial recession from which the country has yet to recover. At the close of the decade, the national experience was characterised in media descriptions of malaise and disenfranchisement, and the loss of perceived core traditional cultural values. Arguably in this period the figure of the adolescent changed qualitatively in Japanese culture, rising to prominence within youth panic discourses circulated by the Japanese news media. These concerned the perceived rise in antisocial and problematic teenage behaviour, including the otaku, the hikikomori shut-in, classroom disobedience, bullying, and prostitution, while multiple cases of brutal murder perpetrated by teenagers became the focus of extensive media coverage. Public discourse expressed alarm at the perceived breakdown of the traditional family and the growing commodification of childhood in Japanese culture. This thesis develops understanding of the shifting attitude in Japan towards adolescence within the context of these cultural anxieties, and through the analysis of anime and videogames suggests strategies that are at work within popular cultural texts that are the product of, contribute to and reorient debates about the position of the suddenly and inescapably visible teenager in Japanese society. Through analysis of discourses relating to the shifting representation of the wandering adolescent as it moves across cultural texts and media forms, the thesis forms an original contribution to knowledge and understanding of Japanese anime and videogames through illumination of a prominent motif that to date remains unexamined

    Are Building Codes Effective at Saving Energy? Evidence from Residential Billing Data in Florida

    In response to the 1973 oil embargo, many states began passing building energy codes in order to promote energy efficiency. While the vast majority of states have energy codes in place, policymakers are now attempting to legislate energy codes at the federal level to help address more recent concerns about energy efficiency and climate change. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about whether energy codes are an effective way to reduce energy consumption in practice. This paper provides the first evaluation of an energy-code change that uses residential billing data on both electricity and natural gas, combined with data on observable characteristics of each residence. The study takes place in Gainesville, Florida, and the empirical strategy is based on comparisons between residences constructed just before and just after Florida increased the stringency of its energy code in 2002. We find that the increased stringency of the energy code is associated with a 4-percent decrease in electricity consumption and a 6-percent decrease in natural-gas consumption. The pattern of savings is consistent with reduced consumption of electricity for air-conditioning and reduced consumption of natural gas for heating. We also estimate economic costs and benefits and find that the private payback period for the average residence is 6.4 years. The social payback period, which accounts for the avoided costs of air-pollution emissions, ranges between 3.5 and 5.3 years.
