    Automatic Pill Dispenser and Reminder

    The Automatic Pill Dispenser is a device which dispenses medications and reminds users when and which one to take, helping with medication adherence. Ideally, this machine will hold four different types of medications, which will be dispensed into a portable device, which the user can take with them throughout the day. When it is time, an integrated app will notify the user when they should take a specific pill. The main focus of work this year is to improve and refine the progress made from the previous group, while meeting the requirements of the design specifications. This year, the group is focused on making the Automatic Pill Dispenser more user friendly by creating a smart phone app which connects with the device and serves as the main operator. The portable device in which the pills are dispensed to is redesigned from the previous group, and is able to be used with the smart phone app. The device has also been made faster, which was accomplished by cutting out redundant sections and optimizing different aspects of the code, decreasing the overall dispensing time

    Reviewing an integrated MBA core course: Working paper series--03-16

    Entering the new century, business education must respond to changes in the work environment. The traditional job as we have known it is rapidly becoming rarer, and students find themselves in an environment of higher complexity, more competition, and faster change. Employers state that students are often unprepared to meet challenges of the new work environment. In response to these influences, a team of educators at Northern Arizona University's College of Business Administration redesigned their MBA program. Based on surveys of employers, alumni and others, core courses of the MBA program became functionally integrated, cross-disciplinary, more outcome-oriented, and more rigorous. The program core was integrated in its entirety; then, components of the core were "chunked" to fit traditional time slots for administrative reasons. This paper describes design and implementation efforts for one MBA core component: Individuals, Teams, and Careers. This component presents students with an integrated view of their own strengths and weaknesses as they relate to personal, team, and career issues for students' pursuit of careers after graduation. Course content is strongly based on self-evaluations by students, then moves into group interaction strategies and skills, and finally focuses on reciprocal interactions of the person and the work environment. The multiple foci of this component include students' careers as future managers, management of their own careers and career mentorship of subordinates. Content development for the MBA program core, and thus for this component was a team effort, negotiated among the MBA redesign team. Six team members represented traditional functional areas of economics, finance, accounting, marketing, management, and computer information systems. Development and implementation of Individuals, Teams, and Careers fell to the authors as members of the MBA core faculty representing the management area. Course topics were team-taught by two management faculty members, as well as by economics, marketing, business law, and human resources faculty. In addition, guest presenters included specialists in leadership, arbitration, and a retired career manager who had been President of IBM's General Products Division. In its first iteration, the Individuals, Teams, and Careers component was presented during semester break between the first and second semesters of the MBA program. With this medial position in the core, much of the team content was based on students' retrospective views of team interaction and performance during the first half of the program. The course has since been moved to the beginning of the course sequence. In this current position, this "chunk" appears as one of two initial program components and fulfills the socialization and expectations-setting function for individual and team performance in the program, as well as addressing career management at the start of the program. This paper describes the integrated content of this MBA program component, including its multiple focus and its outcome orientation. In addition, dimensions of the team-teaching experience in this course component are examined. Finally, students' responses to this component are reported, relative to content and pedagogy. We expect other educators will benefit from seeing Northern Arizona University's response to the dramatically changing environment of the 21st century

    Dairy effluent is a significant point source in the pollution of waterways. Only 50% of dairy farms in the dryland regions of Victoria, Australia, have suitable dairy effluent systems of which only 25% are managed effectively (IRIS Research 2000). Despite many farmers viewing effluent as an undesirable waste, it contains relatively large amounts of agronomically valuable nutrients especially nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). Results are reported from the first two years of a three year study comparing turnip leaf and root dry matter (DM) responses to a range of dairy effluent rates

    Seed Ecology of \u3cem\u3eMicrolaena stipoides\u3c/em\u3e in Grazing Systems of South-Eastern Australia

    Microlaena stipoides var. stipoides (Labill.) R.Br. (Microlaena) is a tufted C3 native Australian perennial grass with a short rhizome that can form dense lawns. Microlaena has a wide geographic distribution throughout southern Australia, particularly in the temperate, high-rainfall tableland areas (\u3e 550 mm AAR) of south-eastern and western Australia where is considered to be important for the grazing industries because of its extended growing season in higher rainfall areas, persistence over many years and persistence through drought. Although Microlaena has an important role in the stability of grazed native pastures, little is known about this grass in grazed communities. This study focused on phenology, seed rain, seed bank, seed germination and seedling recruitment. The overall aim was to assess the likely importance of seeds for the maintenance of Microlaena within swards where it already exists

    Presidential party affiliation and electoral cycles in the U.S.economy: evidence from party changes in adjacent terms.

    Unique evidence presented in this study challenges previous findings about presidential politics and business cycles. Prior studies find strong evidence for a Democratic economic growth advantage of about 1.8 percent per year over the course of a term but only weak evidence for a pre- election surge in growth for incumbent Presidents of either party. This study finds a much smaller Democratic advantage and strong evidence for a pre-election growth surge for Republican Presidents relative to Democratic Presidents. The novelty of these results is attributable to the use of repeated party-change reversals in adjacent terms for identification in place of binary changes in isolated terms separated by as much as a half-century in prior studies. We find a strongly partisan Federal Reserve effect on growth as well. Results are insensitive to an extensive battery of robustness checks including a placebo test

    Polyclonal Mycobacterium Avium Infections in Patients with AIDS: Variations in Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Different Strains of M. Avium Isolated from the Same Patient.

    Broth microdilution MICs were determined for pairs of strains isolated from five AIDS patients with polyclonal Mycobacterium avium infection. Four (80%) of the five patients were infected simultaneously with strains having different antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. These findings have implications for the interpretation of susceptibility data in M. avium prophylaxis and treatment trials
