    Fiber-Cavity-Based Optomechanical Device

    We describe an optomechanical device consisting of a fiber-based optical cavity containing a silicon nitiride membrane. In comparison with typical free-space cavities, the fiber-cavity's small mode size (10 {\mu}m waist, 80 {\mu}m length) allows the use of smaller, lighter membranes and increases the cavity-membrane linear coupling to 3 GHz/nm and quadratic coupling to 20 GHz/nm^2. This device is also intrinsically fiber-coupled and uses glass ferrules for passive alignment. These improvements will greatly simplify the use of optomechanical systems, particularly in cryogenic settings. At room temperature, we expect these devices to be able to detect the shot noise of radiation pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; the following article has been submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Background: Genetic testing of cancer predisposing genes will increasingly be needed in oncology clinics to target cancer treatment. This Delphi study aimed to identify areas of agreement and disagreement between genetics and oncology health professionals and service users about the key messages required by women with breast/ovarian cancer who undergo BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic testing and the optimal timing of communicating key messages. Methods: Participants were 16 expert health professionals specialising in oncology/genetics and 16 service users with breast/ovarian cancer and a pathogenic BRCA1/BRCA2 variant. Online questionnaires containing 53 inductively developed information messages were circulated to the groups separately. Participants rated each message as key/not key on a Likert scale and suggested additional messages. Questionnaires were modified according to the feedback and up to 3 rounds were circulated. Consensus was reached when there was ≥75% agreement. Results: Thirty key messages were agreed by both groups with 7 of the key messages agreed by ≥95% of participants: dominant inheritance, the availability of predictive testing, the importance of pretest discussion, increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and the option of risk-reducing mastectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Both groups agreed that key messages should be communicated before genetic testing and once a pathogenic variant has been identified. Conclusions: There was a high level of agreement within and between the groups about the information requirements of women with breast/ovarian cancer about BRCA1/BRCA2. These key messages will be helpful in developing new approaches to the delivery of information as genetic testing becomes further integrated into mainstream oncology services

    Floppy modes and the free energy: Rigidity and connectivity percolation on Bethe Lattices

    We show that negative of the number of floppy modes behaves as a free energy for both connectivity and rigidity percolation, and we illustrate this result using Bethe lattices. The rigidity transition on Bethe lattices is found to be first order at a bond concentration close to that predicted by Maxwell constraint counting. We calculate the probability of a bond being on the infinite cluster and also on the overconstrained part of the infinite cluster, and show how a specific heat can be defined as the second derivative of the free energy. We demonstrate that the Bethe lattice solution is equivalent to that of the random bond model, where points are joined randomly (with equal probability at all length scales) to have a given coordination, and then subsequently bonds are randomly removed.Comment: RevTeX 11 pages + epsfig embedded figures.     Aberrant Cortical Activity In Multiple GCaMP6-Expressing Transgenic Mouse Lines

    Transgenic mouse lines are invaluable tools for neuroscience but as with any technique, care must be taken to ensure that the tool itself does not unduly affect the system under study. Here we report aberrant electrical activity, similar to interictal spikes, and accompanying fluorescence events in some genotypes of transgenic mice expressing GCaMP6 genetically-encoded calcium sensors. These epileptiform events have been observed particularly, but not exclusively, in mice with Emx1-Cre and Ai93 transgenes, across multiple laboratories. The events occur at >0.1 Hz, are very large in amplitude (>1.0 mV local field potentials, >10% df/f widefield imaging signals), and typically cover large regions of cortex. Many properties of neuronal responses and behavior seem normal despite these events, though rare subjects exhibit overt generalized seizures. The underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon remain unclear, but we speculate about possible causes on the basis of diverse observations. We encourage researchers to be aware of these activity patterns while interpreting neuronal recordings from affected mouse lines and when considering which lines to study

    A new limit on the permanent electric dipole moment of ^{199}Hg

    We present the first results of a new search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the ^{199}Hg atom using a UV laser. Our measurements give d(Hg)= - (1.06 +/- 0.49 +/- 0.40) 10^{-28} e cm. We interpret the result as an upper limit |d(Hg)| < 2.1 10^{-28} e cm (95% C.L.), which sets new constraints on theta_{QCD}, chromo-EDMs of the quarks, and CP violation in Supersymmetric models.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Relevance of initial and final conditions for the Fluctuation Relation in Markov processes

    Numerical observations on a Markov chain and on the continuous Markov process performed by a granular tracer show that the ``usual'' fluctuation relation for a given observable is not verified for finite (but arbitrarily large) times. This suggests that some terms which are usually expected to be negligible, i.e. ``border terms'' dependent only on initial and final states, in fact cannot be neglected.     Single Photons on Pseudo-Demand from Stored Parametric Down-Conversion

    We describe the results of a parametric down-conversion experiment in which the detection of one photon of a pair causes the other photon to be switched into a storage loop. The stored photon can then be switched out of the loop at a later time chosen by the user, providing a single photon for potential use in a variety of quantum information processing applications. Although the stored single photon is only available at periodic time intervals, those times can be chosen to match the cycle time of a quantum computer by using pulsed down-conversion.     Developing a Methodology to Prioritize Texas Watersheds for Environmental Restoration Efforts

    During the past 150 years, several Texas watersheds have undergone significant changes that affect land use, the amount of water flowing through these systems, water quality, and the numbers and types of fish and aquatic species that live in rivers and lakes (McKinney, 2002). For the most part, these changes can be attributed to human activities such as dam building and reservoir management, population growth and resulting increased water use, increased runoff from paved surfaces, the introduction of non-native plant species, and others (Jensen, 2003a). As a consequence, competition for waters between human uses and environmental purposes has now increased to such an extent that some habitats and ecosystems that rely on water may be in peril, especially in semiarid and arid regions of Texas (TWDB, 2002). Recently, there has been increased public interest in investigating whether policies and management strategies could be implemented to restore watersheds, riparian zones, and other natural areas critically important to support wildlife, fisheries, and forests (Brown, 2000 and Alnwick, 2003). Often, the goal is to restore these sites to conditions that approximate conditions that existed prior to intensive human settlement in the 1800s. Interest in restoring watersheds and ecosystems has been expressed by several agencies including the U.S. EPA (2000 and 2001) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (2000). At a local or regional level, efforts have been undertaken to identify restoration opportunities along the Texas Gulf Coast by General Land Office Natural Resources Inventory program (1998). In addition, organizations including the Nature Conservancy (2000), the National Wildlife Federation (1998), and the Galveston Bay Foundation (19980 have also examined the need to set priorities for environmental restoration. For example, the Nature Conservancy published a report, Designing a Geography of Hope (Groves et al, 2000), that describes one method of assessing restoration opportunities across ecosystems and watersheds. A special challenge facing restoration efforts is in developing management strategies that will benefit ecological conditions in watersheds while, at the same time, preserving existing land uses (including homes and businesses) as well as dams and other infrastructure. Activities to identify estuaries and other watersheds that may be in need of restoration efforts have been initiated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (2000) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (2002). To deal with these public concerns, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District Office has expressed interest in determining how watershed restoration programs could be designed and implemented. One of the primary needs in this regard is to develop a science-based process that could objectively evaluate, prioritize, and identify watersheds that most need restoration efforts as well as regions where these measures are most likely to succeed. If such a methodology were developed, the Corps could use these recommendations, in conjunction with non-Federal sponsors, to develop full-fledged feasibility studies within targeted watersheds. Obviously, such a method could potentially be used by other natural resources agencies and organizations in Texas and elsewhere. It should be noted that the Corps is already engaged in ecosystem restoration studies and projects in some parts of Texas, though these efforts are developed as a part of comprehensive Corps projects. Some of these Texas projects include efforts in San Antonio (Salado Creek), Dallas, Houston, the North Bosque River watershed, and other regions. This project seeks to create a methodology that can be used to prioritize watersheds throughout Texas for possible restoration projects, the feasibility of which would be determined in subsequent detailed studies. Environmental operating principles that should guide the Corps in its public works and water resources projects were identified in a March 2002 speech in Louisiana by Lt. General Robert Flowers (Corps of Engineers, 2002). Some of the main points he addressed include the following: * The Corps should strive to achieve environmental sustainability, * Balance should be sought between human activities and natural systems * Potential problems should be resolved by designing environmental and economic solutions that complement one another. * The Corps should seek ways to assess and mitigate potential adverse affects caused by Corps of Engineers projects on the environment
