Jacob: An Educational Agent in a Virtual Environment

    Get PDF
The Jacob Project involves the construction of a virtual environment where an animated human-like agent called Jacob gives instruction to the user. The project focuses on three issues: the software engineering aspects of building a virtual reality system, the integration of natural language interaction and other interaction modalities, and the use of agent technology. Jacob has been given a task model and an instruction model in order to teach a particular task. The results of the project can be generalized so that the agent can be used to instruct other tasks in other virtual environments

Jacob and John Kitzmiller were brothers-in-arms, fighting through the thickets of Virginia with the 138th Pennsylvania. And spring of 1864 was one hell of a slog. The two boys were the youngest members of their family. When the war erupted, their mother and father, Samuel and Jane, lived alongside their daughter Catharine. Jacob was an apprentice blacksmith in B.G. Holabaugh\u27s shop. John still lived at home with his parents. [excerpt

Jacob Mincer's Contribution to Modern Labor Economics: A Review Essay

    Get PDF
One of the key figures in the development of modern labor economics is Jacob Mincer (1922- 2006). His contributions have recently been highlighted and assessed in two books. The most indepth and substantive of these volumes is by Portuguese economist Pedro Teixeira, entitled Jacob Mincer: A Founding Father of Modern Labor Economics (2007). Also valuable and well done is an edited volume by Shoshana Grossbard, Jacob Mincer: A Pioneer of Modern Labor Economics (2006). It is composed of a number of short remembrances by Mincer's colleagues and students, an oral history interview with Mincer by Teixeira, several larger review chapters on important parts of Mincer's research program, and several speeches and short articles by Mincer. In this review essay I provide a brief summary and evaluation of Mincer's research contributions and place in the history of thought in labor economics, drawing largely on these two books but with some of my own observations and perspectives interspersed. A note on the deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills PDE

We prove a priori estimates for a generalised Monge-Amp\`ere PDE with "non-constant coefficients" thus improving a result of Sun in the K\"ahler case. We apply this result to the deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation of Jacob-Yau to obtain an existence result and a priori estimates for some ranges of the phase angle assuming the existence of a subsolution. We then generalise a theorem of Collins-Sz\`ekelyhidi on toric varieties and use it to address a conjecture of Collins-Jacob-Yau.Comment: Final version. 14 pages.
