The role of the German language in scientific communication in Germany has long been the subject of much discussion. In the media, including online, you can find a numerous articles on the subject. Titles in the press show that the German public is very concerned about this state of affairs. The headlines already leave no illusions that the German language is displaced in the scientific research by the English language. Are we dealing with the birth of new lingua franca? Based on selected titles I tried to show how far they correspond with the content of the article. Subjected analyses allowed to discover language strategies used in the titles to illustrate the problem

Women Mentoring Women: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experience of ten business and professional women who have experienced a mentoring relationship as a mentor or protegee with another woman, to understand the essence of their mentoring experience, and to know more about their participation as mentors. This study began with the assumption that women who experienced mentoring whether from women or men would be active mentors themselves. However, the data reveal an important contradiction. Since women are entering the business and professional ranks of the work force at an increasing pace, there are greater numbers of women who have reached positions of influence and are in situations to mentor other women. Likewise, there is also an increase in the number of women entering professions who may benefit from a mentoring relationship, especially as it concerns their workplace satisfaction and professional development. Thus, those who promote mentoring need to know more about its practice. This qualitative study took a phenomenological approach to examine mentoring experiences; the data were collected during conversations that developed into narratives. This approach enabled these women participants to reflect deeply on their own mentoring experiences, and to consider how they in turn mentor others. These women narrated their mentoring experiences as they examined the influences of family, education, and gender, as well as their work. Part of this examination considered the historical context which has otherwise been repressive to women\u27s development in general and to their career development in particular for these women aged thirty-eight to fifty-seven. There are two major implications of this study. First, while these women are interested in mentoring, participate in and enjoy mentoring, and recognize the benefits of mentoring, they lack a commitment to specifically mentor other women. Second, this phenomenological methodology promoted their understanding about the way they seem to distance themselves from mentoring even though they believe they benefited from their own mentoring experiences

In this study, we investigate the effect of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on economic growth in a conditional convergence framework. We look at carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and the group of "F gases", as well as the effect of the sum of these pollutants, i.e. almost all greenhouse gases. Our sample is composed of 81 countries with a variety of per capita income levels and covers the period between 1993 and 2012. We define two ten-year periods and regress economic growth on emissions growth of each pollutant separately, on the first-year GDP of the period and on several control variables. To address the issue of inverse causality bias between pollution emissions and economic growth, as between investment and economic growth, we use an instrumental variable methodology. We use past data to instrument pollution and investment. More precisely, the data of the first year of the period are used as instruments. We find that, except for CO2, greenhouse gas emissions growth does not generate economic growth. CO2 emissions growth has a positive impact on economic growth. Interestingly, this impact is less pronounced between 2003 and 2012, as compared to the 1993-2002 period. In addition, the impact of CO2 emissions growth is stronger in the richer half of countries in our sample

The subject of the dissertation is to evaluate the quality of websites. The research consisted in specifying infoecological characteristics and attributes of website quality, diagnosing information needs of users of such services as well as a providing a detailed analysis of 36 library websites of state higher vocational schools in Poland and 6 services of foreign libraries. The main objective of the dissertation is to show and fill in gaps in the field of bibliology and informatology research by emphasizing the particular importance of information ecology as a vital element in the correct website assessment. An indirect goal is to draw attention to a responsibility for the information environment in which web pages play an important role and are treated by the contemporary recipient as one of the main sources of information and knowledge. Methods used to attain the objective of the dissertation included the method of scholarly literature analysis and criticism, and the comparative method. For the purposes of the research an original method was created for assessing the quality of library web services from the perspective of environmental information. The method was built based on the method of diagnostic survey. Results of the analysis of the services have shown their quality level regarding their construction, utility and functionality as well as their information content. The analysis of library websites, their design and content, has led to the conclusion that they meet infoecological information needs of their users, whereby they show infoecological features. The level of the implementation of these features, however, is varied. In an aggregate comparison and statement of the results, it is Polish websites that attained better marks. The ranking of the library website qualities created on the basis of the research performed by the author of the dissertation can be a valuable source of information for the management of a given library. Also, it can serve as a basic set of data that can be used to improve the existing services

Putative P1B-type ATPase from the bacterium Achromobacter xylosoxidans A8 alters Pb2+/Zn2+/Cd2+-resistance and accumulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

AbstractPbtA, a putative P1B-type ATPase from the Gram-negative soil bacterium Achromobacter xylosoxidans A8 responsible for Pb2+/Zn2+/Cd2+-resistance in Escherichia coli, was heterologously expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. When present in Zn2+- and Pb2+/Cd2+-hypersensitive S. cerevisiae strains CM137 and DTY168, respectively, PbtA was able to restore Zn2+- and Pb2+-resistant phenotype. At the same time, the increase of Pb, Zn, and Cd accumulation in yeast was observed. However, Cd2+-tolerance of the pbtA-bearing yeasts dramatically decreased. The PbtA-eGFP fusion protein was localized primarily in the tonoplast and also in the plasma membrane and the perinuclear region corresponding to the endoplasmic reticulum at later growth stages. This indicates that PbtA protein is successfully incorporated into membranes in yeasts. Since PbtA caused a substantial increase of Pb2+/Zn2+-resistance and accumulation in baker's yeast, we propose its further use for the genetic modification of suitable plant species in order to obtain an effective tool for the phytoremediation of sites polluted by toxic transition metals

Search for cold and hot gas in the ram pressure stripped Virgo dwarf galaxy IC3418

We present IRAM 30m sensitive upper limits on CO emission in the ram pressure stripped dwarf Virgo galaxy IC3418 and in a few positions covering HII regions in its prominent 17 kpc UV/Ha gas-stripped tail. In the central few arcseconds of the galaxy, we report a possible marginal detection of about 1x10^6 M_sun of molecular gas (assuming a Galactic CO-to-H_2 conversion factor) that could correspond to a surviving nuclear gas reservoir. We estimate that there is less molecular gas in the main body of IC3418, by at least a factor of 20, than would be expected from the pre-quenching UV-based star formation rate assuming the typical gas depletion timescale of 2 Gyr. Given the lack of star formation in the main body, we think the H_2-deficiency is real, although some of it may also arise from a higher CO-to-H_2 factor typical in low-metallicity, low-mass galaxies. The presence of HII regions in the tail of IC3418 suggests that there must be some dense gas; however, only upper limits of < 1x10^6 M_sun were found in the three observed points in the outer tail. This yields an upper limit on the molecular gas content of the whole tail < 1x10^7 M_sun, which is an amount similar to the estimates from the observed star formation rate over the tail. We also present strong upper limits on the X-ray emission of the stripped gas in IC3418 from a new Chandra observation. The measured X-ray luminosity of the IC3418 tail is about 280 times lower than that of ESO 137-001, a spiral galaxy in a more distant cluster with a prominent ram pressure stripped tail. Non-detection of any diffuse X-ray emission in the IC3418 tail may be due to a low gas content in the tail associated with its advanced evolutionary state and/or due to a rather low thermal pressure of the surrounding intra-cluster medium.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, A&A accepte

This article examines, under the selected aspects, the texts’ titles belonging to the archaeological and ideological discourse on ethnogenesis of the Slavs. An analysis of the titles show how much not only the content of the text but also the form of it and the titles themselves are under the historical and institutional framework building up an sociopolitical discourse. The period of time when the title was established is the one of the strong nationalist movement and a particular political situation. As the effect of the latter not only the press releases but also the scientific publications were not neutral against the mention earlier discourse but shows how powerful it was in the case of the titles.
