Capacity loss of non-aqueous Li-Air battery due to insoluble product formation: Approximate solution and experimental validation
In this paper, we present a study of Lithium (Li)-air battery capacity by accounting for the voltage loss associated with the electrode passivation and transport resistance caused by insoluble product formation. Two regimes are defined, in which approximate formulas are developed to explicitly evaluate the battery capacity, along with extensive validation against experimental data of various cathode properties and materials from our and several other groups. The dependence of battery capacity on the surface coverage factor, tortuosity, and Damköhler numbers (Da) is explicitly expressed and discussed. The formulas provide a guideline for experimentalists and practitioners in air cathode design, analysis, and control
Efficient Ultrasound Image Analysis Models with Sonographer Gaze Assisted Distillation.
Recent automated medical image analysis methods have attained state-of-the-art performance but have relied on memory and compute-intensive deep learning models. Reducing model size without significant loss in performance metrics is crucial for time and memory-efficient automated image-based decision-making. Traditional deep learning based image analysis only uses expert knowledge in the form of manual annotations. Recently, there has been interest in introducing other forms of expert knowledge into deep learning architecture design. This is the approach considered in the paper where we propose to combine ultrasound video with point-of-gaze tracked for expert sonographers as they scan to train memory-efficient ultrasound image analysis models. Specifically we develop teacher-student knowledge transfer models for the exemplar task of frame classification for the fetal abdomen, head, and femur. The best performing memory-efficient models attain performance within 5% of conventional models that are 1000× larger in size
Two semi-Lagrangian fast methods for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations
In this paper we apply the Fast Iterative Method (FIM) for solving general
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations and we compare the results with an
accelerated version of the Fast Sweeping Method (FSM). We find that FIM can be
indeed used to solve HJB equations with no relevant modifications with respect
to the original algorithm proposed for the eikonal equation, and that it
overcomes FSM in many cases. Observing the evolution of the active list of
nodes for FIM, we recover another numerical validation of the arguments
recently discussed in [Cacace et al., SISC 36 (2014), A570-A587] about the
impossibility of creating local single-pass methods for HJB equations
Metallopanstimulin as a marker for head and neck cancer
BACKGROUND: Metallopanstimulin (MPS-1) is a ribosomal protein that is found in elevated amounts in the sera of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We used a test, denoted MPS-H, which detects MPS-1 and MPS-1-like proteins, to determine the relationship between MPS-H serum levels and clinical status of patients with, or at risk for, HNSCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 125 patients were prospectively enrolled from a university head and neck oncology clinic. Participants included only newly diagnosed HNSCC patients. Two control groups, including 25 non-smokers and 64 smokers, were studied for comparison. A total of 821 serum samples collected over a twenty-four month period were analyzed by the MPS-H radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: HNSCC, non-smokers, and smokers had average MPS-H values of 41.5 ng/mL, 10.2 ng/mL, and 12.8 ng/mL, respectively (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: We conclude that MPS-1 and MPS-1-like proteins are elevated in patients with HNSCC, and that MPS-H appears to be a promising marker of presence of disease and response to treatment in HNSCC patients

Dynamic Covalent Synthesis of Crystalline Porous Graphitic Frameworks
Porous graphitic framework (PGF) is a two-dimensional (2D) material that has emerging energy applications. An archetype contains stacked 2D layers, the structure of which features a fully annulated aromatic skeleton with embedded heteroatoms and periodic pores. Due to the lack of a rational approach in establishing in-plane order under mild synthetic conditions, the structural integrity of PGF has remained elusive and ultimately limited its material performance. Here, we report the discovery of the unusual dynamic character of the C=N bonds in the aromatic pyrazine ring system under basic aqueous conditions, which enables the successful synthesis of a crystalline porous nitrogenous graphitic framework with remarkable in-plane order, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction studies and direct visualization using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The crystalline framework displays superior performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, outperforming the amorphous counterparts in terms of capacity and cycle stability. Insertion of well-defined, evenly spaced nanoscale pores into the two-dimensional (2D) layers of graphene invokes exciting properties due to the modulation of its electronic band gaps and surface functionalities. A bottom-up synthesis approach to such porous graphitic frameworks (PGFs) is appealing but also remains a great challenge. The current methods of building covalent organic frameworks rely on a small collection of thermodynamically reversible reactions. Such reactions are, however, inadequate in generating a fully annulated aromatic skeleton in PGFs. With the discovery of dynamic pyrazine formation, we succeeded in applying this linking chemistry to obtain a crystalline PGF material, which has displayed high electrical conductivity and remarkable performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. We envision that the demonstrated success will open the door to a wide array of fully annulated 2D porous frameworks, which hold immense potential for clean energy applications. We report the unusual dynamic characteristics of the C=N bonds in the pyrazine ring promoted under basic aqueous conditions, which enables the successful synthesis of two-dimensional porous graphitic frameworks (PGFs) featuring fully annulated aromatic skeletons and periodic pores. The PGF displayed high electrical conductivity and remarkable performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, far outperforming the amorphous counterparts in terms of capacity and cycle stability
Logics of Finite Hankel Rank
We discuss the Feferman-Vaught Theorem in the setting of abstract model
theory for finite structures. We look at sum-like and product-like binary
operations on finite structures and their Hankel matrices. We show the
connection between Hankel matrices and the Feferman-Vaught Theorem. The largest
logic known to satisfy a Feferman-Vaught Theorem for product-like operations is
CFOL, first order logic with modular counting quantifiers. For sum-like
operations it is CMSOL, the corresponding monadic second order logic. We
discuss whether there are maximal logics satisfying Feferman-Vaught Theorems
for finite structures.Comment: Appeared in YuriFest 2015, held in honor of Yuri Gurevich's 75th

Accelerating exhaustive pairwise metagenomic comparisons
In this manuscript, we present an optimized and parallel version of our previous work IMSAME, an exhaustive gapped aligner for the pairwise and accurate comparison of metagenomes. Parallelization strategies are applied to take advantage of modern multiprocessor architectures. In addition, sequential optimizations in CPU time and memory consumption are provided. These algorithmic and computational enhancements enable IMSAME to calculate near optimal alignments which are used to directly assess similarity between metagenomes without requiring reference databases. We show that the overall efficiency of the parallel implementation is superior to 80% while retaining scalability as the number of parallel cores used increases. Moreover, we also show thats equential optimizations yield up to 8x speedup for scenarios with larger data.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tec
Effect of sex on meat quality characteristics of Qinchuan cattle
A total of 18 Qinchuan cattle, six intact males (IM), six castrated males (CM) and six females (FM), were used to investigate the effect of sex on the physicochemical characteristics (PCC) and fatty acid (FA) composition of the Longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM). Obvious sex differences were found in the PCC of LDM: the IM group had higher shear value, pH, drip and cooking losses, and contents of ash and hydroxyproline (Hyp) than the CM and FM groups, as well as lower ether extract content and lightness. Both the IM and CM groups had lower water content and higher protein content than the FM group. Sex differences were also observed in contents of C14:0, C14:1, C18:1, saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) between the IM and both the CM and FM groups but not between the CM and FM groups. The results indicated that sex is an importantsource of differences in meat quality of Qinchuan cattle because the castration and the meat characteristics of the CM group were more similar to the FM than the IM group
A 30 Gbps Low-Complexity and Real-Time Digital Modem for Wireless Communications at 0.325 THz
© 2019 IEEE. A high-speed wideband terahertz (THz) communication system with low-complexity and real-time digital signal processing (DSP) is presented in this paper. The architectures of baseband platform, intermediate frequency (IF) module and radio frequency (RF) frontend are described. For real-time DSP implementation with affordable field programmable gate array (FPGA) device, some effective strategies are discussed to reduce resource usage and ensure that the clock constraints are met. Adopting these strategies, all physical layer DSP modules are implemented in two FPGAs with more than 300 MHz system clock. The experimental test results using the developed real-time digital modem prototype demonstrate the superb performance for THz wireless communications
A clean signal for a top-like isosinglet fermion at the Large Hadron Collider
We predict a clean signal at the Large Hadron Collider (=14 TeV for
a scenario where there is a top-like, charge +2/3 vectorlike isosinglet
fermion. Such a quark, via mixing with the standard model top, can undergo
decays via both flavour-changing Z-boson coupling and flavour-changing Yukawa
interactions. We concentrate on the latter channel, and study the situation
where, following its pair-production, the heavy quark pair gives rise to two
tops and two Higgs boson. We show that the case where each Higgs decays in the
channel, there can be a rather distinct and background-free signal
that can unveil the existence of the vectorlike isosinglet quark of this kind.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 4 table
