Computer Generation of Metal Components by Simultaneous Deposition of Mould, Cores and Part
A new solid freeforming method based on co-delivery of mould powder materials and part
powder materials using vibration-controlled, dry powder valves is presented in this paper. Thin
layers of stainless steel powder are delivered to the forming area according to the cross-section of
the CAD file to produce the component. Mould powder which has low sinterability is delivered to
the non-forming areas of the same layer. All powders are delivered by computer-controlled,
acoustic powder valves. The flow rate and switching of the valves provides the composition and
shape control during fabrication. The stacked layers of loose powder are then sintered in a
conventional furnace. The mould materials are removed after sintering. This method avoids the
high thermal stress problem in selective laser sintering, avoids high capitalisation, makes use of
conventional furnaces and allows for the incorporation of three dimensional function gradients.
Test pieces including step wedge and Spierpinski’s cube were fabricated. Advantages, limitations

Dry Powder Microfeeding System for Solid Freeform Fabrication
Second generation SFF techniques allow both composition and shape to be downloaded
directly from a computer file so that 3D functionally graded materials (FGM) can be assembled.
Methods for multi-material deposition are also needed in combinatorial research, colour
management and pharmaceutical dosing. In this work, computer-controlled microfeeding systems
using ultrasonic vibration of a capillary were built. A wide range of stable flow rate control and
switching control were achieved in the acoustic vibration system, and uniform powder doses
were obtained in the ultrasonic system. The experimental results show that the nozzle diameter,
transmission fluid depth, waveforms, voltage amplitude, frequency and oscillation duration all
influence the dose mass. Among these factors, the nozzle diameter, voltage amplitude and
oscillation duration can be used to control the dose mass. Raster printing of patterns with various
resolution and dot size are demonstrated.Mechanical Engineerin

Direct Extrusion Freeforming of Ceramic Pastes
Microextrusion freeforming of ceramic lattices from high solids ceramic pastes provides
multi-scale hierarchical void structures with the advantages of low shrinkage stress and high
sintered density. Alumina lattices were directly fabricated using 80-500 Pm diameter filaments.
We report here on the implementation of design and fabrication of these scaffolds for band gap

Shifting ground: agricultural R&D worldwide
This brief summarizes the book, Agricultural R&D in the Developing World: Too Little, Too Late?, edited by Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston, and Roley R. Piggott. The authors of the brief look at topics such as: International spillovers of public agricultural R&D; patterns of worldwide public investments in agricultural research; pervasive underfunding of agricultural research; divergent research agendas. The brief examines policy implications and concludes that "The issues are large scale and long term and demand serious attention, including further, more specific analysis. The national governments of developing countries can take some initiative, as indicated by the analysis of case studies in the book, in areas of national agricultural research policy such as: (1) enhancing IPR and tailoring the institutional and policy details of intellectual property to best fit local circumstances, (2) increasing the total amount of government funding for their national agricultural research systems, (3) introducing institutional arrangements and incentives for private and joint public–private funding, such as matching grants and check-off funds, and (4) improving the processes by which agricultural research resources are administered and allocated." A novel non-Fermi-liquid state in the iron-pnictide FeCrAs
We report transport and thermodynamic properties of stoichiometric single
crystals of the hexagonal iron-pnictide FeCrAs. The in-plane resistivity shows
an unusual "non-metallic" dependence on temperature T, rising continuously with
decreasing T from ~ 800 K to below 100 mK. The c-axis resistivity is similar,
except for a sharp drop upon entry into an antiferromagnetic state at T_N 125
K. Below 10 K the resistivity follows a non-Fermi-liquid power law, rho(T) =
rho_0 - AT^x with x<1, while the specific heat shows Fermi liquid behaviour
with a large Sommerfeld coefficient, gamma ~ 30 mJ/mol K^2. The high
temperature properties are reminiscent of those of the parent compounds of the
new layered iron-pnictide superconductors, however the T -> 0 properties
suggest a new class of non-Fermi liquid.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Measuring the Fraction of Obscured Quasars by the Infrared Luminosity of Unobscured Quasars
Recent work has suggested that the fraction of obscured AGN declines with
increasing luminosity, but it has been difficult to quantify this trend. Here,
we attempt to measure this fraction as a function of luminosity by studying the
ratio of mid-infrared to intrinsic nuclear bolometric luminosity in unobscured
AGN. Because the mid-infrared is created by dust reprocessing of shorter
wavelength nuclear light, this ratio is a diagnostic of f_obsc, the fraction of
solid angle around the nucleus covered by obscuring matter. In order to
eliminate possible redshift-dependences while also achieving a large dynamic
range in luminosity, we have collected archival 24 micron MIPS photometry from
objects with z~1 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Great
Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and the Cosmic Evolution Survey
(COSMOS). To measure the bolometric luminosity for each object, we used
archival optical data supplemented by GALEX data. We find that the mean ratio
of 24 microns to bolometric luminosity decreases by a factor of ~3 in the
L_bol=10^44-3x10^47 ergs s^-1 range, but there is also a large scatter at
constant L_bol. Using radiation transfer solutions for model geometries, we
show how the IR/bolometric ratio relates to f_obsc and compare these values
with those obtained obtained from samples of X-ray selected AGN. Although we
find approximate agreement, our method indicates somewhat higher values of
f_obsc, particularly in the middle range of luminosities, suggesting that there
may be a significant number of heavily obscured AGN missed by X-ray surveys.Comment: ApJ, in press. 10 pages in emulateapj style, 4 figures, 3 table
Patients' request for and emergency physicians' prescription of antimicrobial prophylaxis for anthrax during the 2001 bioterrorism-related outbreak
BACKGROUND: Inappropriate use of antibiotics by individuals worried about biological agent exposures during bioterrorism events is an important public health concern. However, little is documented about the extent to which individuals with self-identified risk of anthrax exposure approached physicians for antimicrobial prophylaxis during the 2001 bioterrorism attacks in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a telephone survey of randomly selected members of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians to assess patients' request for and emergency physicians' prescription of antimicrobial agents during the 2001 anthrax attacks. RESULTS: Ninety-seven physicians completed the survey. Sixty-four (66%) respondents had received requests from patients for anthrax prophylaxis; 16 (25%) of these physicians prescribed antibiotics to a total of 23 patients. Ten physicians prescribed ciprofloxacin while 8 physicians prescribed doxycycline. CONCLUSION: During the 2001 bioterrorist attacks, the majority of the emergency physicians we surveyed encountered patients who requested anthrax prophylaxis. Public fears may lead to a high demand for antibiotic prophylaxis during bioterrorism events. Elucidation of the relationship between public health response to outbreaks and outcomes would yield insights to ease burden on frontline clinicians and guide strategies to control inappropriate antibiotic allocation during bioterrorist events
Effect of magnetic fluctuations on the normal state properties of Sr_2RuO_4
We investigate the normal state transport properties of SrRuO and we
show that a consistent explanation of the experimental results can be obtained
assuming that the system is near a quantum phase transition. Within the
framework of a self-consistent spin fluctuation theory, we calculate the
temperature variation of some relevant physical quantities and we discuss a
