    Classification of IIB backgrounds with 28 supersymmetries

    We show that all IIB backgrounds with strictly 28 supersymmetries are locally isometric to the plane wave solution of arXiv:hep-th/0206195. Moreover, we demonstrate that all solutions with more than 26 supersymmetries and only 5-form flux are maximally supersymmetric. The N=28 plane wave solution is a superposition of the maximally supersymmetric IIB plane wave with a heterotic string solution. We investigate the propagation of strings in this background, find the spectrum and give the string light-cone Hamiltonian.Comment: 30 pages, typos correcte

    IIA supergravity backgrounds preserving one supersymmetry locally admit four types of Killing spinors distinguished by the orbits of Spin(9,1)Spin(9,1) on the space of spinors. We solve the Killing spinor equations of IIA supergravity with and without cosmological constant for Killing spinors representing two of these orbits, with isotropy groups Spin(7)Spin(7) and Spin(7)⋉R8Spin(7)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^8. In both cases, we identify the geometry of spacetime and express the fluxes in terms of the geometry. We find that the geometric constraints of backgrounds with a Spin(7)⋉R8Spin(7)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^8 invariant Killing spinor are identical to those found for heterotic backgrounds preserving one supersymmetry.Comment: 21 page

    M-Horizons

    We solve the Killing spinor equations and determine the near horizon geometries of M-theory that preserve at least one supersymmetry. The M-horizon spatial sections are 9-dimensional manifolds with a Spin(7) structure restricted by geometric constraints which we give explicitly. We also provide an alternative characterization of the solutions of the Killing spinor equation, utilizing the compactness of the horizon section and the field equations, by proving a Lichnerowicz type of theorem which implies that the zero modes of a Dirac operator coupled to 4-form fluxes are Killing spinors. We use this, and the maximum principle, to solve the field equations of the theory for some special cases and present some examples.Comment: 36 pages, latex. Reference added, minor typos correcte

    The effects of a national, voluntary agreement for a more inclusive working life on work participation following long-term sickness absence:a Norwegian cohort study

    OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the average individual effect of the company-level Norwegian Agreement on a More Inclusive Working Life (IA Agreement) on individuals' (i) sustained return to work after a sickness absence (SA) episode, and (ii) recurrent SA. METHODS: Using register data, 79 253 men and 94 914 women born in Norway 1967-1976 were followed for one year between 2005 and 2010 after returning to work from an SA episode (&gt;16 days). Weighted Cox proportional hazard models analysed time to first exit from work by companies' IA status (IA/non-IA). Weighted cumulative incidence differences between IA and non-IA groups with 95% bootstrapped confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for the competing events of full SA, graded (&lt;100%) SA, unemployment/economic inactivity, education, disability pension, and death/emigration. Stabilised inverse probability of treatment weights balanced IA/non-IA groups according to nine covariates. Analyses were stratified by gender, and separately for two initial SA diagnoses (musculoskeletal and psychological). RESULTS: Both men [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 0.96, 95% CI 0.93-0.99] and women (adjusted HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94-0.99) in IA companies were less likely to exit work in the year following SA. Similar findings were seen among individuals with musculoskeletal diagnoses and women with psychological diagnoses. Men with psychological diagnoses were more likely to exit work. Recurrent full and graded SA were more likely, and unemployment/economic inactivity less likely, in IA companies. However, the estimated effects were small and the CI often included the null. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals working in IA companies were more likely to remain in work. This was mainly due to reduced unemployment/economic inactivity, suggesting the IA Agreement may have influenced work participation through other means than reduced SA.</p

    Pseudo-Killing Spinors, Pseudo-supersymmetric p-branes, Bubbling and Less-bubbling AdS Spaces

    We consider Einstein gravity coupled to an n-form field strength in D dimensions. Such a theory cannot be supersymmetrized in general, we nevertheless propose a pseudo-Killing spinor equation and show that the AdS X Sphere vacua have the maximum number of pseudo-Killing spinors, and hence are fully pseudo-supersymmetric. We show that extremal p-branes and their intersecting configurations preserve fractions of the pseudo-supersymmetry. We study the integrability condition for general (D,n) and obtain the additional constraints that are required so that the existence of the pseudo-Killing spinors implies the Einstein equations of motion. We obtain new pseudo-supersymmetric bubbling AdS_5 X S^5 spaces that are supported by a non-self-dual 5-form. This demonstrates that non-supersymmegtric conformal field theories may also have bubbling states of arbitrary droplets of free fermions in the phase space. We also obtain an example of less-bubbling AdS geometry in D=8, whose bubbling effects are severely restricted by the additional constraint arising from the integrability condition.Comment: typos corrected, extra comments and references added, version appeared in JHE

    Heterotic Black Horizons

    We show that the supersymmetric near horizon geometry of heterotic black holes is either an AdS_3 fibration over a 7-dimensional manifold which admits a G_2 structure compatible with a connection with skew-symmetric torsion, or it is a product R^{1,1} * S^8, where S^8 is a holonomy Spin(7) manifold, preserving 2 and 1 supersymmetries respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the AdS_3 class of heterotic horizons can preserve 4, 6 and 8 supersymmetries provided that the geometry of the base space is further restricted. Similarly R^{1,1} * S^8 horizons with extended supersymmetry are products of R^{1,1} with special holonomy manifolds. We have also found that the heterotic horizons with 8 supersymmetries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4, AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3 or R^{1,1} * T^4 * K_3, where the radii of AdS_3 and S^3 are equal and the dilaton is constant.Comment: 35 pages, latex.     Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras and the BLG Theory I: Classification of Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras

    As Lie algebras of compact connected Lie groups, semisimple Lie algebras have wide applications in the description of continuous symmetries of physical systems. Mathematically, semisimple Lie algebra admits a Cartan-Weyl basis of generators which consists of a Cartan subalgebra of mutually commuting generators H_I and a number of step generators E^\alpha that are characterized by a root space of non-degenerate one-forms \alpha. This simple decomposition in terms of the root space allows for a complete classification of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper, we introduce the analogous concept of a Cartan-Weyl Lie 3-algebra. We analyze their structure and obtain a complete classification of them. Many known examples of metric Lie 3-algebras (e.g. the Lorentzian 3-algebras) are special cases of the Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras. Due to their elegant and simple structure, we speculate that Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras may be useful for describing some kinds of generalized symmetries.
