    Application of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) infusions in palliative home care: design of a randomized clinical trial

    BACKGROUND: Palliative care in cancer aims at alleviating the suffering of patients. A previous study in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer showed that adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) infusions had a favourable effect on fatigue, appetite, body weight, muscle strength, functional status and quality of life. The present study was designed 1. To evaluate whether ATP has favourable effects in terminally ill cancer patients, 2. To evaluate whether ATP infusions may reduce family caregiver burden and reduce the use of professional health care services, and 3. To test the feasibility of application of ATP infusions in a home care setting. METHODS/DESIGN: The study can be characterized as an open-labelled randomized controlled trial with two parallel groups. The intervention group received usual palliative care, two visits by an experienced dietician for advice, and regular ATP infusions over a period of 8 weeks. The control group received palliative care as usual and dietetic advice, but no ATP. This paper gives a description of the study design, selection of patients, interventions and outcome measures. DISCUSSION: From April 2002 through October 2006, a total of 100 patients have been randomized. Follow-up of patients will be completed in December 2006. At the time of writing, five patients are still in follow up. Of the 95 patients who have completed the study, 69 (73%) have completed four weeks of follow-up, and 53 (56%) have completed the full eight-week study period. The first results are expected in 2007

    Perpendicular giant magnetoresistance of NiFe/Cu multilayered nanowires

    We have prepared by electrodeposition Ni80Fe20/Cu multilayered nanowires into the pores of polymer membranes and performed giant magnetoresistance (GMR) measurements in the current perpendicular to the layer planes geometry. GMR ratios as high as 80% have been obtained at 4.2 K. Two types of structure have been studied: conventional Ni80Fe20/Cu multilayers and multilayers composed of Ni80Fe20/Cu/Ni80Fe20 trilayers magnetically isolated by long Cu rods.     Sharing data offers opportunities to make research into older person care more efficient. However, this is not yet common practice in the Netherlands. To optimally utilize the potential of data sharing, insight into factors that promote the implementation of data sharing in older person care research is important. In the TOPICS-MDS project, research data from the National Program for Older Person Care (NPO) was collected, managed and reused on a large scale. The experiences of stakeholders involved in this project can teach us more about the needs researchers have when sharing their data. For this study, we interviewed 23 people involved in different ways in data sharing in TOPICS-MDS about their experiences in the data sharing process. Thematic analysis yielded four overarching themes, which we converted into the following lessons: those who want to promote data sharing must ensure 1) visibility of the added value of data sharing, 2) trust in the database, 3) transparency of the process and 4) communication. These lessons complement the results of previous research with concrete advice. Optimizing data sharing in older person research is both promising and challenging. It requires dedication and involvement from both the researcher and the research participant, and appreciation for both.</p

    Perpendicular giant magnetoresistance of NiFe/Cu and Co/Cu multilayered nanowires

    We report a comparative study of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in CPP (current perpendicular to the planes) geometry in two different types of multilayered nanowire systems: Co/Cu and Ni80Fe20/Cu. The nanowires were produced in the cylindrical pores of a polymer membrane using a pulsed electrodeposition technique. A GMR ratio as large as 78% was obtained for Ni80Fe20/Cu multilayered nanowires. Using the results of the Valet-Fert model for perpendicular transport we deduce the bulk and interface spin asymmetry coefficients and comparison is made between the two systems
