Does Abrasion Pleurodesis increase the Morbidity of Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery for Primary Pneumothorax?
Posters - Topic 6: Thoracic 2 - Pain, Pleura and Port Approaches: no. P62OBJECTIVE: Pneumothorax surgery is a frequently used model to investigate the impact of surgical approach on postoperative morbidity. However, the criticism that abrasion pleurodesis during such surgery may confound results by introducing additional morbidity has not been specifically investigated ...postprin
Market reaction to seasoned offerings in China
This study examines stock market reaction to the announcement of various forms
of seasoned issues in China. Our empirical evidence demonstrates that market reactions differ
in ways that suggest a difference between management’s internal assessment and the
market’s assessment of the stock price. The market responds unfavourably to the
announcement, notably in the case of rights issues and also with regard to open offers. Private
placements experience an unfavourable pre-announcement reaction, which contrasts with the
favourable reaction after the event. Convertible bond issues generate positive excess returns
consistent with the market’s confidence that they can help to align management and
shareholders’ interests. Further investigation shows that market reaction is related to factors
specific to the issuer and issue by reference to the period immediately surrounding the issue.
Specifically, ownership concentration, agency matters connected with equity offerings,
investor protection connected with fund allocation and security pricing, and the influence of
powerful moneyed interests together provide an instructive insight into market reaction.
Institutional inefficiency pertaining to underwriting, auditing, analysts’ forecasts and credit
ratings are found to have a weak association with market price, consistent with due public
scepticism concerning management and their gatekeepers
A review of physical supply and EROI of fossil fuels in China
This paper reviews China’s future fossil fuel supply from the perspectives of physical output and net energy output. Comprehensive analyses of physical output of fossil fuels suggest that China’s total oil production will likely reach its peak, at about 230 Mt/year (or 9.6 EJ/year), in 2018; its total gas production will peak at around 350 Bcm/year (or 13.6 EJ/year) in 2040, while coal production will peak at about 4400 Mt/year (or 91.9 EJ/year) around 2020 or so. In terms of the forecast production of these fuels, there are significant differences among current studies. These differences can be mainly explained by different ultimately recoverable resources assumptions, the nature of the models used, and differences in the historical production data. Due to the future constraints on fossil fuels production, a large gap is projected to grow between domestic supply and demand, which will need to be met by increasing imports. Net energy analyses show that both coal and oil and gas production show a steady declining trend of EROI (energy return on investment) due to the depletion of shallow-buried coal resources and conventional oil and gas resources, which is generally consistent with the approaching peaks of physical production of fossil fuels. The peaks of fossil fuels production, coupled with the decline in EROI ratios, are likely to challenge the sustainable development of Chinese society unless new abundant energy resources with high EROI values can be found
Application of a fast track surgery protocol for video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy in non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis: a case-control study
Session 16 - MITIG VATS Session no. F-144This open access journal suppl. entitled: 23rd European Conference on General Thoracic SurgeryOBJECTIVES: The use of fast-track surgery (FTS) management has rarely been assessed in the treatment of non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis (NTMG) using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). METHODS: FTS management was applied in 68 consecutive patients receiving VATS thymectomy for NTMG. Our FTS protocol included: maintenance of each patient’s original anti-cholinesterase and steroid therapy perioperatively; no plasmapharesis or immunoglobulin therapy preoperatively; avoidance or minimization of central lines, chest tubes and ICU stays postoperatively; and specific management of postop respiratory difficulties without ‘knee-jerk’ assumption of myasthenic crisis. These patients were matched for multiple demographic and ...postprin
The time-dependent expression of keratins 5 and 13 during the reepithelialization of human skin wounds
The time-dependent reepithelialization of 55 human surgical skin wounds with a wound age between 8h and more than 2 months was investigated by the immunohistochemical localization of cytokeratins 5 and 13. A complete, rebuilt epidermal layer over the wound area was first detectable in a 5-day-old wound, while all wounds of more than 18 days duration contained a completely reepithelialized wound area. Between 5 and 18 days the basal layer of keratinocytes showed — in contrast to normal skin — only some cells positive for cytokeratin 5. In some, but not all lesions with a wound age of 13 days or more, a basal cell layer completely staining for cytokeratin 5 was demonstrable. This staining pattern was found in all skin wounds with a wound age of more than 23 days. The immunohistochemical detection of cytokeratin 13 which can be observed regularly in non-cornifying squamous epithelia provides no information for the time-estimation of human skin wounds, since no significant temporary expression of this polypeptide seems to occur during the healing of human skin wounds
MaxAlign: maximizing usable data in an alignment
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The presence of gaps in an alignment of nucleotide or protein sequences is often an inconvenience for bioinformatical studies. In phylogenetic and other analyses, for instance, gapped columns are often discarded entirely from the alignment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>MaxAlign is a program that optimizes the alignment prior to such analyses. Specifically, it maximizes the number of nucleotide (or amino acid) symbols that are present in gap-free columns – the alignment area – by selecting the optimal subset of sequences to exclude from the alignment.</p> <p>MaxAlign can be used prior to phylogenetic and bioinformatical analyses as well as in other situations where this form of alignment improvement is useful. In this work we test MaxAlign's performance in these tasks and compare the accuracy of phylogenetic estimates including and excluding gapped columns from the analysis, with and without processing with MaxAlign. In this paper we also introduce a new simple measure of tree similarity, Normalized Symmetric Similarity (NSS) that we consider useful for comparing tree topologies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We demonstrate how MaxAlign is helpful in detecting misaligned or defective sequences without requiring manual inspection. We also show that it is not advisable to exclude gapped columns from phylogenetic analyses unless MaxAlign is used first. Finally, we find that the sequences removed by MaxAlign from an alignment tend to be those that would otherwise be associated with low phylogenetic accuracy, and that the presence of gaps in any given sequence does not seem to disturb the phylogenetic estimates of <it>other </it>sequences.</p> <p>The MaxAlign web-server is freely available online at http://www.cbs.dtu.dk/services/MaxAlign where supplementary information can also be found. The program is also freely available as a Perl stand-alone package.</p
Missense mutations cluster within the carboxyl-terminal region of DAX-1 and impair transcriptional repression
DAX-1 is an orphan nuclear receptor that plays a key role in the development and function of the adrenal gland and hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. Mutations in the gene encoding DAX-1 result in X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC). Affected boys typically present with primary adrenal failure in infancy or childhood and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism at the time of puberty. The majority of DAX1 mutations described to date are nonsense or frameshift mutations that result in premature truncation of the DAX-1 protein and loss of DAX-1 repressor function. Relatively few missense mutations in DAX1 have been reported. Here, we describe missense mutations in three additional families with X-linked AHC. When combined with previous reports, the DAX1 missense mutations appear to cluster within restricted regions of the putative ligand-binding domain of DAX-1 and affect amino acids that are evolutionarily conserved, suggesting that these regions correspond to critical functional domains. Transcription assays, using a variety of artificial and native target genes, were performed to assess the effects of these mutations on the function of DAX-1. All DAX-1 missense mutant constructs showed marked loss of repressor function, with the exception of I439S, a mutation previously shown to be associated with delayed-onset adrenal failure and incomplete hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. These data indicate that most DAX1 missense mutations associated with classic AHC exhibit marked loss of function. The locations of these mutations thereby identify important functional domains in the carboxyl-terminus of the protein
Field theories with anisotropic scaling in 2D, solitons and the microscopic entropy of asymptotically Lifshitz black holes
Field theories with anisotropic scaling in 1+1 dimensions are considered. It
is shown that the isomorphism between Lifshitz algebras with dynamical
exponents z and 1/z naturally leads to a duality between low and high
temperature regimes. Assuming the existence of gap in the spectrum, this
duality allows to obtain a precise formula for the asymptotic growth of the
number of states with a fixed energy which depends on z and the energy of the
ground state, and reduces to the Cardy formula for z=1. The holographic
realization of the duality can be naturally inferred from the fact that
Euclidean Lifshitz spaces in three dimensions with dynamical exponents and
characteristic lengths given by z, l, and 1/z, l/z, respectively, are
diffeomorphic. The semiclassical entropy of black holes with Lifshitz
asymptotics can then be recovered from the generalization of Cardy formula,
where the ground state corresponds to a soliton. An explicit example is
provided by the existence of a purely gravitational soliton solution for BHT
massive gravity, which precisely has the required energy that reproduces the
entropy of the analytic asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with z=3.
Remarkably, neither the asymptotic symmetries nor central charges were
explicitly used in order to obtain these results.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, references corrected and update
Holographic DC conductivities from the open string metric
We study the DC conductivities of various holographic models using the open
string metric (OSM), which is an effective metric geometrizing density and
electromagnetic field effect. We propose a new way to compute the nonlinear
conductivity using OSM. As far as the final conductivity formula is concerned,
it is equivalent to the Karch-O'Bannon's real-action method. However, it yields
a geometrical insight and technical simplifications. Especially, a real-action
condition is interpreted as a regular geometry condition of OSM. As
applications of the OSM method, we study several holographic models on the
quantum Hall effect and strange metal. By comparing a Lifshitz background and
the Light-Cone AdS, we show how an extra parameter can change the temperature
scaling behavior of conductivity. Finally we discuss how OSM can be used to
study other transport coefficients, such as diffusion constant, and effective
temperature induced by the effective world volume horizon.Comment: 33 page
