    Temperature effects on the 15-85 mu m spectra of olivines and pyroxenes

    Far-infrared spectra of laboratory silicates are normally obtained at room temperature even though the grains responsible for astronomical silicate emission bands seen at wavelengths >20 μm are likely to be at temperatures below ∼150 K. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on silicate spectra, we have obtained absorption spectra of powdered forsterite and olivine, along with two orthoenstatites and diopside clinopyroxene, at 3.5±0.5 K and at room temperature (295±2 K). To determine the changes in the spectra the resolution must be increased from ∼1 to 0.25 cm−1 at both temperatures, because a reduction in temperature reduces the phonon density, thereby reducing the width of the infrared peaks. Several bands observed at 295 K split at 3.5 K. At 3.5 K the widths of isolated single bands in olivine, enstatites and diopside are ∼90 per cent of their 295-K widths. However, in forsterite the 3.5-K widths of the 31-, 49- and 69-μm bands are, respectively, 90, 45 and 31 per cent of their 295-K widths. Owing to an increase in phonon energy as the lattice contracts, 3.5-K singlet peaks occur at shorter wavelengths than do the corresponding 295-K peaks; the magnitude of the wavelength shift increases from ∼0–0.2 μm at 25 μm to ∼0.9 μm at 80 μm. In olivines and enstatites the wavelength shifts can be approximated by polynomials of the form ax+bx2 where x=λpk(295 K) and the coefficients a and b differ between minerals; for diopside this formula gives a lower limit to the shift. Changes in the relative absorbances of spectral peaks are also observed. The temperature dependence of λpk and bandwidth shows promise as a means to deduce characteristic temperatures of mineralogically distinct grain populations. In addition, the observed changes in band strength with temperature will affect estimates of grain masses and relative mineral abundances inferred using room-temperature laboratory data. Spectral measurements of a variety of minerals at a range of temperatures are required to quantify these effects fully

    The 69-mu m forsterite band as a dust temperature indicator

    A band of pure crystalline forsterite (100 per cent Mg2SiO4) occurs at 69.67 μm at room temperature (295 K); for olivines with ≳10 per cent Fe the corresponding feature is at ≳73 μm. The Mg-rich forsterite feature is observed in a variety of ISO LWS spectra, but the corresponding Fe-rich olivine feature is not. For the 10 astronomical sources in our sample, the forsterite band peaks in the 68.9–69.3 μm range and narrows with decreasing peak wavelength. This is consistent with the shortwards shifting of the peak observed when laboratory samples are cooled to 77 K (69.07 μm) and 3.5 K (68.84 μm). The shifted peak is produced by lattice contraction and the sharpening is due to a decrease in phonon density at lower temperatures. However, the astronomical bands are narrower than those of the laboratory samples. By comparing the laboratory and astronomical peak wavelengths, we deduce characteristic forsterite 69-μm band temperatures that are in the 27–84 K range for the eight post-main-sequence objects in our sample. These values are shown to be consistent with the local continuum temperatures derived using a β=1.5 dust emissivity index, similar to derived interstellar values of the opacity index. For the pre-main sequence-objects HD 100546 and MWC 922, the characteristic 69-μm forsterite band temperatures (127±18 and 139±10 K, respectively) are significantly higher than those of the post-main-sequence objects and are more than twice as high as their local continuum temperatures deduced using β=1.5. The assumption of large grains (β=0) can produce agreement between the derived 69-μm and continuum temperatures for one of these objects but not for the other — a spatial separation between the forsterite and continuum-emitting grains may therefore be implied for it. We conclude that observations of the peak wavelength and FWHM of the 69-μm forsterite band show great promise as a new diagnostic of characteristic grain temperatures

    The Thermal Design, Characterization, and Performance of the SPIDER Long-Duration Balloon Cryostat

    We describe the SPIDER flight cryostat, which is designed to cool six millimeter-wavelength telescopes during an Antarctic long-duration balloon flight. The cryostat, one of the largest to have flown on a stratospheric payload, uses liquid helium-4 to deliver cooling power to stages at 4.2 and 1.6 K. Stainless steel capillaries facilitate a high flow impedance connection between the main liquid helium tank and a smaller superfluid tank, allowing the latter to operate at 1.6 K as long as there is liquid in the 4.2 K main tank. Each telescope houses a closed cycle helium-3 adsorption refrigerator that further cools the focal planes down to 300 mK. Liquid helium vapor from the main tank is routed through heat exchangers that cool radiation shields, providing negative thermal feedback. The system performed successfully during a 17 day flight in the 2014-2015 Antarctic summer.     Management of secondary poor response to botulinum toxin in cervical dystonia: a multicentre audit

    Background: Botulinum toxin A (BoNT‐A) is an effective treatment for cervical dystonia. Nevertheless, up to 30‐40% patients discontinue treatment, often due to poor response. The British Neurotoxin Network (BNN) recently published guidelines on the management of poor response to BoNT‐A in cervical dystonia, but adherence to these has not yet been assessed. Objectives: To assess adherence to and usefulness of BNN guidelines in clinical practice. Methods: We undertook a retrospective medical notes audit of adherence to the BNN guidelines in three U.K. tertiary neurosciences centres. Results: Out of 76 patients identified with poor response, 42 (55%) had a suboptimal response and, following BNN recommendations, 25 of them (60%) responded to adjustments in BoNT dose, muscle selection or injection technique. Of the remaining 34 (45%) patients with no BoNT response, 20 (59%) were tested for immune resistance, 8 [40%] of whom showed resistance. 14 (18%) of all patients were switched to BoNT‐B, and 27 (36%) were referred for deep brain stimulation surgery. In those not immune to BoNT‐A, clinical improvement was seen in 5 (41%) after adjusting their dose and injection technique. Conclusion: Our audit shows that optimizing BoNT dose or injection strategy largely led to improvements in those with suboptimal response and in those reporting no response without resistance. It would be helpful to standardize investigations of potential resistance in those with no therapeutic response

    Broadband coated lens solutions for FIR-mm-wave instruments

    This paper presents recent results of ongoing European Space Agency funded program of work aimed at developing large dielectric lenses suitable for future satellite missions, with a particular focus on requirements for CMB polarimetry. Two lens solutions are being investigated: (i) polymer lenses with broadband multi-layer antireflection coatings; (ii) silicon lenses with surface-structured anti-reflection coating represented by directly machined pyramidal features. For each solution, base materials with and without coatings have been optically characterized over a range of temperatures down to ∼10 K. Full lens solutions are under manufacture and will be tested in a bespoke large cryo-optical facility

    The challenges of transferring chronic illness patients to adult care: reflections from pediatric and adult rheumatology at a US academic center

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Little is known about the transfer of care process from pediatric to adult rheumatology for patients with chronic rheumatic disease. The purpose of this study is to examine changes in disease status, treatment and health care utilization among adolescents transferring to adult care at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We identified 31 eligible subjects who transferred from pediatric to adult rheumatology care at UCSF between 1995–2005. Subject demographics, disease characteristics, disease activity and health care utilization were compared between the year prior to and the year following transfer of care.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean age at the last pediatric rheumatology visit was 19.5 years (17.4–22.0). Subject diagnoses included systemic lupus erythematosus (52%), mixed connective tissue disease (16%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (16%), antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (13%) and vasculitis (3%). Nearly 30% of subjects were hospitalized for disease treatment or management of flares in the year prior to transfer, and 58% had active disease at the time of transfer. In the post-transfer period, almost 30% of subjects had an increase in disease activity. One patient died in the post-transfer period. The median transfer time between the last pediatric and first adult rheumatology visit was 7.1 months (range 0.7–33.6 months). Missed appointments were common in the both the pre and post transfer period.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A significant percentage of patients who transfer from pediatric to adult rheumatology care at our center are likely to have active disease at the time of transfer, and disease flares are common during the transfer period. These findings highlight the importance of a seamless transfer of care between rheumatology providers.</p

    Cloned cattle derived from a novel zona-free embryo reconstruction system

    As the demand for cloned embryos and offspring increases, the need arises for the development of nuclear transfer procedures that are improved in both efficiency and ease of operation. Here, we describe a novel zona-free cloning method that doubles the throughput in cloned bovine embryo production over current procedures and generates viable offspring with the same efficiency. Elements of the procedure include zona-free enucleation without a holding pipette, automated fusion of 5-10 oocyte-donor cell pairs and microdrop in vitro culture. Using this system, zona-free embryos were reconstructed from five independent primary cell lines and cultured either singularly (single-IVC) or as aggregates of three (triple-IVC). Blastocysts of transferable quality were obtained at similar rates from zona-free single-IVC, triple-IVC, and control zona-intact embryos (33%, 25%, and 29%, respectively). In a direct comparison, there was no significant difference in development to live calves at term between single-IVC, triple-IVC, and zona-intact embryos derived from the same adult fibroblast line (10%, 13%, and 15%, respectively). This zona-free cloning method could be straightforward for users of conventional cloning procedures to adopt and may prove a simple, fast, and efficient alternative for nuclear cloning of other species as well

    Female Sex Worker Social Networks and STI/HIV Prevention in South China

    Reducing harm associated with selling and purchasing sex is an important public health priority in China, yet there are few examples of sustainable, successful programs to promote sexual health among female sex workers. The limited civil society and scope of nongovernmental organizations circumscribe the local capacity of female sex workers to collectively organize, advocate for their rights, and implement STI/HIV prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to examine social networks among low-income female sex workers in South China to determine their potential for sexual health promotion.Semi-structured interviews with 34 low-income female sex workers and 28 health outreach members were used to examine how social relationships affected condom use and negotiation, STI/HIV testing and health-seeking behaviors, and dealing with violent clients. These data suggested that sex worker's laoxiang (hometown social connections) were more powerful than relationships between women selling sex at the same venue in establishing the terms and risk of commercial sex. Female sex workers from the same hometown often migrated to the city with their laoxiang and these social connections fulfilled many of the functions of nongovernmental organizations, including collective mobilization, condom promotion, violence mitigation, and promotion of health-seeking behaviors. Outreach members observed that sex workers accompanied by their laoxiang were often more willing to accept STI/HIV testing and trust local sexual health services.Organizing STI/HIV prevention services around an explicitly defined laoxiang social network may provide a strong foundation for sex worker health programs. Further research on dyadic interpersonal relationships between female sex workers, group dynamics and norm establishment, and the social network characteristics are needed

    Magnesium deficiency: effect on bone mineral density in the mouse appendicular skeleton

    BACKGROUND: Dietary magnesium (Mg) deficiency in the mouse perturbs bone and mineral homeostasis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate bone mineral density of the femur in control and Mg-deficient mice. METHODS: BALB/c mice aged 28 days at study initiation were maintained on a normal or Mg deficient (0.0002% Mg) diet, and at time points 0, 2, 4 or 6 weeks bones were harvested for bone mineral density analysis. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) was used to assess the trabecular metaphyseal compartment and the cortical midshaft. RESULTS: Although mean total bone density of the femoral midshaft in Mg deficient mice did not differ significantly from controls throughout the study, the trabecular bone compartment showed significantly decreased mineral content after 4 (p < 0.001) and 6 weeks (p < 0.001) of Mg depletion. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the profound effect of Mg depletion on the trabecular compartment of bone, which, with its greater surface area and turnover, was more responsive to Mg depletion than cortical bone in the appendicular skeleton of the mouse
