Minimal symmetric Darlington synthesis
We consider the symmetric Darlington synthesis of a p x p rational symmetric
Schur function S with the constraint that the extension is of size 2p x 2p.
Under the assumption that S is strictly contractive in at least one point of
the imaginary axis, we determine the minimal McMillan degree of the extension.
In particular, we show that it is generically given by the number of zeros of
odd multiplicity of I-SS*. A constructive characterization of all such
extensions is provided in terms of a symmetric realization of S and of the
outer spectral factor of I-SS*. The authors's motivation for the problem stems
from Surface Acoustic Wave filters where physical constraints on the
electro-acoustic scattering matrix naturally raise this mathematical issue
Continuous Interaction with a Virtual Human
Attentive Speaking and Active Listening require that a Virtual Human be capable of simultaneous perception/interpretation and production of communicative behavior. A Virtual Human should be able to signal its attitude and attention while it is listening to its interaction partner, and be able to attend to its interaction partner while it is speaking – and modify its communicative behavior on-the-fly based on what it perceives from its partner. This report presents the results of a four week summer project that was part of eNTERFACE’10. The project resulted in progress on several aspects of continuous interaction such as scheduling and interrupting multimodal behavior, automatic classification of listener responses, generation of response eliciting behavior, and models for appropriate reactions to listener responses. The development of a 16S rRNA gene based PCR for the identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae and comparison with four other species specific PCR assays
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Streptococcus pneumoniae </it>is one of the most frequently encountered pathogens in humans but its differentiation from closely related but less pathogenic streptococci remains a challenge.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This report describes a newly-developed PCR assay (Spne-PCR), amplifying a 217 bp product of the 16S rRNA gene of <it>S. pneumoniae</it>, and its performance compared to other genotypic and phenotypic tests.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The new PCR assay designed in this study, proved to be specific at 57°C for <it>S. pneumoniae</it>, not amplifying <it>S. pseudopneumoniae </it>or any other streptococcal strain or any strains from other upper airway pathogenic species. PCR assays (psaA, LytA, ply, spn9802-PCR) were previously described for the specific amplification of <it>S. pneumoniae</it>, but <it>psaA</it>-PCR was the only one found not to cross-react with <it>S. pseudopneumoniae</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Spne-PCR, developed for this study, and psaA-PCR were the only two assays which did not mis-identify <it>S. pseudopneumoniae </it>as <it>S. pneumoniae</it>. Four other PCR assays and the AccuProbe assay were unable to distinguish between these species.</p

BACKGROUND: The Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) In Stroke (PAIS) study is a phase III multicenter, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of high-dose acetaminophen in patients with acute stroke. The trial compares treatment with a daily dose of 6 g acetaminophen, started within 12 hours after the onset of symptoms, with matched placebo. The purpose of this study is to assess whether treatment with acetaminophen for 3 days will result in improved functional outcome through a modest reduction in body temperature and prevention of fever.The previously planned statistical analysis based on a dichotomization of the scores on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) may not make the most efficient use of the available baseline information. Therefore, the planned primary analysis of the PAIS study has been changed from fixed dichotomization of the mRS to a sliding dichotomy analysis. Genetically identical twin-pair difference models support the amyloid cascade hypothesis
The amyloid cascade hypothesis has strongly impacted the Alzheimer's disease research agenda and clinical trial designs over the past decades, but precisely how amyloid-β pathology initiates the aggregation of neocortical tau remains unclear. We cannot exclude the possibility of a shared upstream process driving both amyloid-β and tau in an independent manner instead of there being a causal relationship between amyloid-β and tau. Here, we tested the premise that if a causal relationship exists, then exposure should be associated with outcome both at the individual-level as well as within identical twin-pairs, who are strongly matched on genetic, demographic and shared environmental background. Specifically, we tested associations between longitudinal amyloid-β PET and cross-sectional tau-PET, neurodegeneration and cognitive decline using genetically identical twin-pair difference models, which provide the unique opportunity of ruling out genetic and shared environmental effects as potential confounders in an association. We included 78 cognitively unimpaired identical twins with [18F]flutemetamol (amyloid-β)-PET, [18F]flortaucipir (tau)-PET, MRI (hippocampal volume), and cognitive data (composite memory). Associations between each modality were tested at the individual-level using generalized estimating equation models, and within identical twin-pairs using within-pair difference models. Mediation analyses were performed to test for directionality in the associations as suggested by the amyloid cascade hypothesis. At the individual-level, we observed moderate-to-strong associations between amyloid-β, tau, neurodegeneration and cognition. The within-pair difference models replicated results observed at the individual-level with comparably strong effect sizes. Within-pair differences in amyloid-β were strongly associated with within-pair differences in tau (β=0.68, p < 0.001), and moderately associated with within-pair differences in hippocampal volume (β=-0.37, p = 0.03) and memory functioning (β=-0.57, p < 0.001). Within-pair differences in tau were moderately associated with within-pair differences in hippocampal volume (β=-0.53, p < 0.001) and strongly associated with within-pair differences in memory functioning (β=-0.68, p < 0.001). Mediation analyses showed that of the total twin-difference effect of amyloid-β on memory functioning, the proportion mediated through pathways including tau and hippocampal volume was 69.9%, which was largely attributable to the pathway leading from amyloid-β to tau to memory functioning (proportion mediated: 51.6%). Our results indicate that associations between amyloid-β, tau, neurodegeneration and cognition are unbiased by (genetic) confounding. Furthermore, effects of amyloid-β on neurodegeneration and cognitive decline were fully mediated by tau. These novel findings in this unique sample of identical twins are compatible with the amyloid cascade hypothesis and thereby provide important new knowledge for clinical trial designs

Neural Correlates of Behavioural Olfactory Sensitivity Changes Seasonally in European Starlings
Possibly due to the small size of the olfactory bulb (OB) as compared to rodents, it was generally believed that songbirds lack a well-developed sense of smell. This belief was recently revised by several studies showing that various bird species, including passerines, use olfaction in many respects of life. During courtship and nest building, male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) incorporate aromatic herbs that are rich in volatile compounds (e.g., milfoil, Achillea millefolium) into the nests and they use olfactory cues to identify these plants. Interestingly, European starlings show seasonal differences in their ability to respond to odour cues: odour sensitivity peaks during nest-building in the spring, but is almost non-existent during the non-breeding season.This study used repeated in vivo Manganese-enhanced MRI to quantify for the first time possible seasonal changes in the anatomy and activity of the OB in starling brains. We demonstrated that the OB of the starling exhibits a functional seasonal plasticity of certain plant odour specificity and that the OB is only able to detect milfoil odour during the breeding season. Volumetric analysis showed that this seasonal change in activity is not linked to a change in OB volume. By subsequently experimentally elevating testosterone (T) in half of the males during the non-breeding season we showed that the OB volume was increased compared to controls.By investigating the neural substrate of seasonal olfactory sensitivity changes we show that the starlings' OB loses its ability during the non-breeding season to detect a natural odour of a plant preferred as green nest material by male starlings. We found that testosterone, applied during the non-breeding season, does not restore the discriminatory ability of the OB but has an influence on its size
Nature and frequency of respiratory involvement in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia
Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) is a relatively common mitochondrial disorder. Weakness of the extra-ocular, limb girdle and laryngeal muscles are established clinical features. Respiratory muscle involvement however has never been studied systematically, even though respiratory complications are one of the main causes of death. We therefore determined the prevalence and nature of respiratory muscle involvement in 23 patients with genetically confirmed CPEO. The main finding was decreased respiratory muscle strength, both expiratory (76.8% of predicted, p = 0.002) and inspiratory (79.5% of predicted, p = 0.004). Although the inspiratory vital capacity (92.5% of predicted, p = 0.021) and the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (89.3% of predicted, p = 0.002) were below predicted values, both were still within the normal range in the majority of patients. Expiratory weakness was associated with a decreased vital capacity (ρ = 0.502, p = 0.015) and decreased peak expiratory flow (ρ = 0.422, p = 0.045). Moreover, expiratory muscle strength was lower in patients with limb girdle weakness (62.6 ± 26.1% of predicted vs. 98.9 ± 22.5% in patients with normal limb girdle strength, p = 0.003), but was not associated with other clinical features, subjective respiratory complaints, disease severity or disease duration. Since respiratory involvement in CPEO is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, the present data justify periodic assessment of respiratory functions in all CPEO patients
