    Evaluating Mood Changes in Response to Anthropogenic Noise with a Response-Slowing Task in Three Species of Zoo-housed Primates

    In the zoo environment, anthropogenic noise is common as sound levels fluctuate due to visitors, construction, habitat design, and special events. In this study, changes in the mood of three species of zoo-housed primates in response to a loud annual event were evaluated with the response-slowing paradigm. In this paradigm, animals experiencing anxiety slow responses on simple cognitive tasks when emotional content is displayed. Following a previously validated approach, we measured latencies to touch potentially threatening (conspecific faces with directed gaze) and non-threatening (conspecific faces with averted gaze) images overlaid on a grey square, relative to neutral control images (grey squares only) on a touchscreen. In Experiment 1, four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were tested in two conditions: during a baseline (non-stressful) period and opportunistically during three days during which loud jets frequently flew overhead. Results indicated a significant effect of condition, with an increase in latency to touch images of conspecific faces relative to control images during the days of the loud event. In Experiment 2, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes, n = 4) and western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla, n = 2) were tested during the same loud event following a similar methodology. The results revealed subtle changes across conditions; however, this was likely driven by the apes increasing their response speed to face stimuli relative to control stimuli over time (habituation). These findings suggest that the macaques, but not the apes, underwent detectable affective changes during the loud event. With additional development, this relatively simple paradigm may be an effective and feasible way to evaluate real-time changes in the mood of zoo-housed animals

    Signaling of the human P2Y(1) receptor measured by a yeast growth assay with comparisons to assays of phospholipase C and calcium mobilization in 1321N1 human astrocytoma cells

    The human P2Y(1) receptor was expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain MPY578q5, which is engineered to couple to mammalian G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and requires agonist-induced activation for growth. A range of known P2Y(1) receptor agonists were examined with the yeast growth assay system, and the results were validated by comparing with potencies in the transfected 1321N1 astrocytoma cell line, in which calcium mobilization was measured with a FLIPR (fluorometric-imaging plate reader). The data were also compared with those from phospholipase C activation and radioligand binding with the use of a newly available radioligand [(3)H]MRS2279 (2-chloro-N(6)-methyl-(N)-methanocarba-2’-deoxyadenosine-3’,5’bisphosphate). In the yeast growth assay, the rank order of potency of 2-MeSADP (2-methylthioadenosine 5’-diphosphate), ADP (adenosine 5’-diphosphate), and ATP (adenosine 5’-triphosphate) is the same as those in other assay systems, i.e., 2-MeSADP>ADP>ATP. The P2Y(1)-selective antagonist MRS2179 (N(6)-methyl-2-deoxyadenosine-3’,5’-bisphosphate) was shown to act as an antagonist with similar potency in all systems. The results suggest that the yeast expression system is suitable for screening P2Y(1) receptor ligands, both agonists and antagonists. The yeast system should be useful for random mutagenesis of GPCRs to identify mutants with certain properties, such as selective potency enhancement for small synthetic molecules and constitutive activity

    We have obtained (warped) AdS black hole solutions in the three dimensional extended new massive gravity. We investigate some properties of black holes and obtain central charges of the two dimensional dual CFT. To obtain the central charges, we use the relation between entropy and temperature according to the AdS/CFT dictionary.     Warped black holes in 3D general massive gravity

    We study regular spacelike warped black holes in the three dimensional general massive gravity model, which contains both the gravitational Chern-Simons term and the linear combination of curvature squared terms characterizing the new massive gravity besides the Einstein-Hilbert term. The parameters of the metric are found by solving a quartic equation constrained by an inequality that imposes the absence of closed timelike curves. Explicit expressions for the central charges are suggested by exploiting the fact that these black holes are discrete quotients of spacelike warped AdS(3) and a known formula for the entropy.     Acute visceral pain relief mediated by A(3)AR agonists in rats: involvement of N-type voltage-gated calcium channels

    Pharmacological tools for chronic visceral pain management are still limited and inadequate. A(3) adenosine receptor (A(3)AR) agonists are effective in different models of persistent pain. Recently, their activity has been related to the block of N-type voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels (Ca(v)2.2) in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons. The present work aimed to evaluate the efficacy of A(3)AR agonists in reducing postinflammatory visceral hypersensitivity in both male and female rats. Colitis was induced by the intracolonic instillation of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNBS; 30 mg in 0.25 mL 50% EtOH). Visceral hypersensitivity was assessed by measuring the visceromotor response and the abdominal withdrawal reflex to colorectal distension. The effects of A(3)AR agonists (MRS5980 and Cl-IB-MECA) were evaluated over time after DNBS injection and compared to that of the selective Ca(v)2.2 blocker PD173212, and the clinically used drug linaclotide. A(3)AR agonists significantly reduced DNBS-evoked visceral pain both in the postinflammatory (14 and 21 days after DNBS injection) and persistence (28 and 35 days after DNBS) phases. Efficacy was comparable to effects induced by linaclotide. PD173212 fully reduced abdominal hypersensitivity to control values, highlighting the role of Ca(v)2.2. The effects of MRS5980 and Cl-IB-MECA were completely abolished by the selective A(3)AR antagonist MRS1523. Furthermore, patch-clamp recordings showed that A(3)AR agonists inhibited Ca(v)2.2 in dorsal root ganglia neurons isolated from either control or DNBS-treated rats. The effect on Ca(2+) current was PD173212-sensitive and prevented by MRS1523. A(3)AR agonists are effective in relieving visceral hypersensitivity induced by DNBS, suggesting a potential therapeutic role against abdominal pain

    Logarithmic Corrections to Schwarzschild and Other Non-extremal Black Hole Entropy in Different Dimensions

    Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory if the latter is able to give an independent computation of the entropy of non-extremal black holes from microscopic description. For Schwarzschild black holes in four space-time dimensions the macroscopic result seems to disagree with the existing result in loop quantum gravity.Comment: LaTeX, 40 pages; corrected small typos and added reference

    Comments on Holographic Entanglement Entropy and RG Flows

    Using holographic entanglement entropy for strip geometry, we construct a candidate for a c-function in arbitrary dimensions. For holographic theories dual to Einstein gravity, this c-function is shown to decrease monotonically along RG flows. A sufficient condition required for this monotonic flow is that the stress tensor of the matter fields driving the holographic RG flow must satisfy the null energy condition over the holographic surface used to calculate the entanglement entropy. In the case where the bulk theory is described by Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the latter condition alone is not sufficient to establish the monotonic flow of the c-function. We also observe that for certain holographic RG flows, the entanglement entropy undergoes a 'phase transition' as the size of the system grows and as a result, evolution of the c-function may exhibit a discontinuous drop.Comment: References adde

    Family Planning Decisions, Perceptions and Gender Dynamics among Couples in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.

    Contraceptive use is low in developing countries which are still largely driven by male dominated culture and patriarchal values. This study explored family planning (FP) decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples in Mwanza region of Tanzania. Twelve focus group discussions and six in-depth interviews were used to collect information from married or cohabiting males and females aged 18-49. The participants were purposively selected. Qualitative methods were used to explore family planning decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples. A guide with questions related to family planning perceptions, decisions and gender dynamics was used. The discussions and interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed manually and subjected to content analysis. Four themes emerged during the study. First, "risks and costs" which refer to the side effects of FP methods and the treatment of side -effects as well as the costs inherit in being labeled as an unfaithful spouse. Second, "male involvement" as men showed little interest in participating in family planning issues. However, the same men were mentioned as key decision-makers even on the number of children a couple should have and the child spacing of these children. Third, "gender relations and communication" as participants indicated that few women participated in decision-making on family planning and the number of children to have. Fourth, "urban-rural differences", life in rural favoring having more children than urban areas therefore, the value of children depended on the place of residence. Family Planning programs should adapt the promotion of communication as well as joint decision-making on FP among couples as a strategy aimed at enhancing FP use
