Time and information in perceptual adaptation to speech

Presubmission manuscript and supplementary files (stimuli, stimulus presentation code, data, data analysis code).Perceptual adaptation to a talker enables listeners to efficiently resolve the many-to-many mapping between variable speech acoustics and abstract linguistic representations. However, models of speech perception have not delved into the variety or the quantity of information necessary for successful adaptation, nor how adaptation unfolds over time. In three experiments using speeded classification of spoken words, we explored how the quantity (duration), quality (phonetic detail), and temporal continuity of talker-specific context contribute to facilitating perceptual adaptation to speech. In single- and mixed-talker conditions, listeners identified phonetically-confusable target words in isolation or preceded by carrier phrases of varying lengths and phonetic content, spoken by the same talker as the target word. Word identification was always slower in mixed-talker conditions than single-talker ones. However, interference from talker variability decreased as the duration of preceding speech increased but was not affected by the amount of preceding talker-specific phonetic information. Furthermore, efficiency gains from adaptation depended on temporal continuity between preceding speech and the target word. These results suggest that perceptual adaptation to speech may be understood via models of auditory streaming, where perceptual continuity of an auditory object (e.g., a talker) facilitates allocation of attentional resources, resulting in more efficient perceptual processing.NIH NIDCD (R03DC014045

The purpose of this project was to customize a design and create a contemporary evening dress for a client, a school donor, who was attending two University events: a university founder\u27s ball event, and a botanical garden orchid show entitled Fashion meets Botanical Garden. Furthermore, the aim of this project was to show and educate customers with respect to how unique customized design can be performed with the help of technology and to showcase how such new technologies can open up a continuously-expanding array of creative possibilities and spawn a complex new set of solutions for designers

    Permanent Superhumps in V1974 Cyg

We present results of 32 nights of CCD photometry of V1974 Cygni, from the years 1994 and 1995. We verify the presence of two distinct periodicities in the light curve: 0.0812585 day~1.95 hours and 0.0849767 d~2.04 hr. We establish that the shorter periodicity is the orbital period of the underlying binary system. The longer period oscillates with an average value of |dot(P)| ~ 3x10^(7)--typical to permanent superhumps. The two periods obey the linear relation between the orbital and superhump periods that holds among members of the SU Ursae Majoris class of dwarf novae. A third periodicity of 0.083204 d~2.00 hr appeared in 1994 but not in 1995. It may be related to the recently discovered anti-superhump phenomenon. These results suggest a linkage between the classical nova V1974 Cyg and the SU UMa stars, and indicate the existence of an accretion disk and permanent superhumps in the system no later than 30 months after the nova outburst. From the precessing disk model of the superhump phenomenon we estimate that the mass ratio in the binary system is between 2.2 and 3.6. Combined with previous results this implies a white dwarf mass of 0.75-1.07 M sun.Comment: 11 pages, 10 eps. figures, Latex, accepted for publication in MNRA

The purpose of this study was to find how fashion designers\u27 personal experience and psychological process influence their design process. Especially, this study is to seek how flow, life satisfaction, personal expressiveness, and passion influence student designers\u27 design process. We hypothesized that there will be significant differences in student designers\u27 perceptions and design processes depending on their level of flow, life satisfaction, personal expressiveness, and passion

New scanning electron microscope observations of unadulterated calcareous nannofossil assemblages on lamina surfaces of Cretaceous Tanzania Drilling Project sediments reveal high diversity in the < 3 μm size-range and high abundances of small and frangible morphologies. These assemblages prompt comparison to modern assemblages, which show similar high diversity and abundance of very small and fragile taxa, although these assemblages are generally not preserved in the fossil record due to taphonomic filtering. Not only are there broad similarities between the general composition of modern assemblages and those of the Tanzanian lagerstätte, but also our discovery of several new Cretaceous taxa provides evidence for greatly extended fossil lineages of extant orders, with implications for both deep-time biodiversity divergence and survival through the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Our findings include: new species that are the first-recorded Mesozoic representatives of the extant Syracosphaeraceae and Papposphaeraceae; potentially previously unrecorded diversity in the Mesozoic Calciosoleniaceae, another extant order, represented by extant species that have been described already; and new species and unusually high abundances of the Mesozoic Stephanolithiaceae. We also highlight the extended range of an incertae sedis Cenozoic genus, Ellipsolithus, into at least the Turonian. Here, we describe seven new miniscule to very small Cretaceous species: Syracosphaera antiqua, S. repagula, Pocillithus macleodii, P. crucifer, Stradnerlithus wendleri, S.? haynesiae and Tortolithus foramen
