    Fatigue-induced changes of impedance and performance in target tracking

    Kinematic variability is caused, in part, by force fluctuations. It has been shown empirically and numerically that the effects of force fluctuations on kinematics can be suppressed by increasing joint impedance. Given that force variability increases with muscular fatigue, we hypothesized that joint impedance would increase with fatigue to retain a prescribed accuracy level. To test this hypothesis, subjects tracked a target by elbow flexion and extension both with fatigued and unfatigued elbow flexor and extensor muscles. Joint impedance was estimated from controlled perturbations to the elbow. Contrary to the hypothesis, elbow impedance decreased, whereas performance, expressed as the time-on-target, was unaffected by fatigue. Further analysis of the data revealed that subjects changed their control strategy with increasing fatigue. Although their overall kinematic variability increased, task performance was retained by staying closer to the center of the target when fatigued. In conclusion, the present study reveals a limitation of impedance modulation in the control of movement variability

    Conventionally assessed voluntary activation does not represent relative voluntary torque production

    The ability to voluntarily activate a muscle is commonly assessed by some variant of the twitch interpolation technique (ITT), which assumes that the stimulated force increment decreases linearly as voluntary force increases. In the present study, subjects (n = 7) with exceptional ability for maximal voluntary activation (VA) of the knee extensors were used to study the relationship between superimposed and voluntary torque. This includes very high contraction intensities (90–100%VA), which are difficult to consistently obtain in regular healthy subjects (VA of ∼90%). Subjects were tested at 30, 60, and 90° knee angles on two experimental days. At each angle, isometric knee extensions were performed with supramaximal superimposed nerve stimulation (triplet: three pulses at 300 Hz). Surface EMG signals were obtained from rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and medialis muscles. Maximal VA was similar and very high across knee angles: 97 ± 2.3% (mean ± SD). At high contraction intensities, the increase in voluntary torque was far greater than would be expected based on the decrement of superimposed torque. When voluntary torque increased from 79.6 ± 6.1 to 100%MVC, superimposed torque decreased from 8.5 ± 2.6 to 2.8 ± 2.3% of resting triplet. Therefore, an increase in VA of 5.7% (from 91.5 ± 2.6 to 97 ± 2.3%) coincided with a much larger increase in voluntary torque (20.4 ± 6.1%MVC) and EMG (33.9 ± 6.6%max). Moreover, a conventionally assessed VA of 91.5 ± 2.6% represented a voluntary torque of only 79.6 ± 6.1%MVC. In conclusion, when maximal VA is calculated to be ∼90% (as in regular healthy subjects), this probably represents a considerable overestimation of the subjects’ ability to maximally drive their quadriceps muscles

    Bilateral motor unit synchronization is functionally organized.

    To elucidate the neural interactions underlying bimanual coordination, we investigated in 11 participants the bilateral coupling of homologous muscles in an isometric force production task involving fatiguing elbow flexion and extension. We focused on changes in motor unit (MU) synchronization as evident in EMG recordings of relevant muscles. In contrast to a related study on leg muscles, the arm muscles did not exhibit MU synchronization around 16 Hz, consistent with our hypothesis that 16 Hz MU synchronization is linked to balance maintenance. As expected, bilateral MU synchronization was apparent between 8 and 12 Hz and increased with fatigue and more strongly so for extensor than for flexor muscles. MU synchronization in that frequency band is interpreted in terms of common bilateral input and substantiates the idea that common input is functionally organized. Since these findings are consistent with the literature on mirror movements, they suggest that both phenomena may be related. © 2006 Springer-Verlag

    Can the electromyographic fatigue threshold be determined from superficial elbow flexor muscles during an isometric single-joint task?

    The purpose of this study was to compare the electromyographic fatigue threshold (EMG) values determined simultaneously from superficial elbow flexor muscles during an isometric single-joint task. Eight subjects performed isometric elbow flexions at randomly ordered percentages of maximal voluntary contraction (20, 30, 40, 50 and 60%). During these bouts, electromyographic (EMG) activity was measured in the anterior head of Deltoïd, lateral head of Triceps brachii, Brachioradialis and both short and long head of Biceps brachii. For each subject and each muscle, the EMG amplitude data were plotted as function of time for the five submaximal bouts. The slope coefficient of the EMG amplitude versus time linear relationships were plotted against force level. EMG was determined as the y-intercept of this relationship and considered as valid only if the following criteria were met: (1) significant positive linear regression (P < 0.05) between force and slope coefficient, (2) an adjusted coefficient of determination for force versus slope coefficient relationship greater than 0.85, and (3) a standard error for the EMG below 5% of maximal voluntary contraction. The EMG could only be determined for one muscle (the long head of Biceps brachii) and only in three out of the eight subjects (mean value = 24.9 ± 1.1% of maximal voluntary contraction). The lack of EMG in most of the subjects (5/8) could be explained by putative compensations between elbow muscles which were indirectly observed in some subjects. In this way, EMG should be studied from a more simple movement i.e., ideally a movement implying mainly one muscle
