    Multimedia Annotation Interoperability Framework

    Multimedia systems typically contain digital documents of mixed media types, which are indexed on the basis of strongly divergent metadata standards. This severely hamplers the inter-operation of such systems. Therefore, machine understanding of metadata comming from different applications is a basic requirement for the inter-operation of distributed Multimedia systems. In this document, we present how interoperability among metadata, vocabularies/ontologies and services is enhanced using Semantic Web technologies. In addition, it provides guidelines for semantic interoperability, illustrated by use cases. Finally, it presents an overview of the most commonly used metadata standards and tools, and provides the general research direction for semantic interoperability using Semantic Web technologies

    LM-KBC 2023: 2<sup>nd</sup> Challenge on Knowledge Base Construction from Pre-trained Language Models

    Large language models (LLMs) like chatGPT [1] have advanced a range of semantic tasks and are being ubiquitously used for knowledge extraction. Although several works have explored this ability by crafting prompts with in-context or instruction learning, the viability of complete and precise knowledge base construction from LMs is still in its nascent form. In the 2nd edition of this challenge, we invited participants to extract disambiguated knowledge triples from LMs for a given set of subjects and relations. In crucial difference to existing probing benchmarks like LAMA [2], we made no simplifying assumptions on relation cardinalities, i.e., a subject-entity can stand in relation with zero, one, or many object-entities. Furthermore, submissions needed to go beyond just ranking predicted surface strings, and materialize disambiguated entities in the output, which were evaluated using established KB metrics of precision, recall, and F1-score. The challenge had two tracks: (1) a small model track, where models with &lt; 1 billion parameters could be probed, and (2) an open track, where participants could use any LM of their choice. We received seven submissions, two for track 1 and five for track 2. We present the contributions and insights of the submitted peer-reviewed submissions and lay out the possible paths for future work.     Multimedia Annotations on the Semantic Web

    Multimedia in all forms (images, video, graphics, music, speech) is exploding on the Web. The content needs to be annotated and indexed to enable effective search and retrieval. However, recent standards and best practices for multimedia metadata don't provide semantically rich descriptions of multimedia content. On the other hand, the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) Semantic Web effort has been making great progress in advancing techniques for annotating semantics of Web resources. To bridge this gap, a new W3C task force has been created to investigate multimedia annotations on the Semantic Web. This article examines the problems of semantically annotating multimedia and describes the integration of multimedia metadata with the Semantic Web. (Editor's note by John R. Smith)

    CURIOS: Connecting Community Heritage through Linked Data

    The CURIOS project explores how digital archives for rural community heritage groups can be made more sustainable so that volunteer members can maintain a lasting digital presence. It is developing software tools to help remote rural communities to collaboratively maintain and present information about their cultural heritage. The objective is to investigate the use of semantic web/linked data technology to build a general, flexible and “future proof” software platform that could help such projects to develop digital archives and to be sustainable over time. As an interdisciplinary project we aim to synthesise a narrative that draws from both social science and computer science perspectives by critically reflecting upon the novel approach taken and the on-going results that are being produced

    Applications of expressive ontology reasoning for the Semantic Web require scalable algorithms for deducing implicit knowledge from explicitly given knowledge bases. Besides the development of more effi- cient such algorithms, awareness is rising that approximate reasoning solutions will be helpful and needed for certain application domains. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the Screech approach to approximate reasoning with OWL ontologies, which is based on the KAON2 algorithms, facilitating a compilation of OWL DL TBoxes into Datalog, which is tractable in terms of data complexity. We present three different instantiations of the Screech approach, and report on experiments which show that a significant gain in efficiency can be achieved

    Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
