    Phosphorite geochemistry: isotopic evidence for meteoric alteration of francolite on a local scale

    Meteoric alteration of francolite in the Lower Pliocene Upper Varswater Formation of Cape Provihce, South Africa, has produced clear diagenetic trends in 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C, δ180, Na, S04, Sr/Ca and Nd/Ca that reflect the degree of groundwater interaction with francolite. When these diagenetic trends are extrapolated to zero alteration, δ13C-values for the original francolite-C02 are heavier than −3%‰ showing that organic-rich sediments played no part in the production of this francolite
