    Manufacturing knowledge management strategy

    The study sought to understand the components of knowledge management strategy from the perspective of staff in UK manufacturing organizations. To analyse this topic, we took an empirical approach and collaborated with two manufacturing organizations. Our main finding centres on the key components of a knowledge management strategy, and the relationships between it and manufacturing strategy and corporate strategy. Other findings include: the nature of knowledge in manufacturing organizations; the relevance of (in)formal processes; top-down and bottom-up communication; taking ownership for information processes. We also make comments on the development of action plans for better knowledge management. The implications are that, for an integrated approach to knowledge management strategy in manufacturing organizations, involvement across the organization and at all levels is necessary

    Mysterious circles in the Namib Desert

    AbstractThere is currently still no scientifically sound explanation as to the origin of the so-called “fairy circles” in the Namib. An in situ experiment was conducted in the NamibRand Nature Reserve to test the latest hypothesis that the circles are the result of a semi-volatile gas that inhibits plant growth. Stipagrostis ciliata grass plants were planted in containers filled with soil from the circle or from outside the circle. Some containers were sealed at the bottom, to prevent any gases from entering from below, while others were left open. Containers were placed both inside the circle as well as outside the circle. The origin of the soil, i.e. whether it came from inside or outside the circles, did not affect the performance of the plants when they were growing in the same position and container type. All plants growing outside the circle, irrespective of the origin of the soil or the container type, performed better than those growing inside the circle. It is concluded that there is a factor inhibiting plant growth in the circle and that this factor could possibly be a semi-volatile gas, because growth was more negatively affected in the open containers than in the sealed containers

    Design Strategy for a Scalable Virtual Pharmacy Patient

    This paper reports on the completion of the first stage of research of a pilot study undertaken in collaboration by 3 Australian universities. The pilot involves the development of a virtual pharmacy patient (VPP) as a study of its effects on student learning when it is used as a formative assessment tool for pharmacy students in interviewing and diagnosing a patient. The design criteria that have been incorporated into the virtual patient system are described. The novelty of this system is in its ability to track and report on the style and appropriateness of student questioning of a virtual pharmacy patient. One of the main problems in this type of system is recognition of free-text student questions. An overview of the pragmatic solution to this and the systems potential as a tool to generate a lexicon for more complex question recognition is presented

    A 5000-year record of relative sea-level change in New Jersey, USA

    Stratigraphic data from salt marshes provide accurate reconstructions of Holocene relative sea level (RSL) change and necessary constraints to models of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), which is the dominant cause of late Holocene RSL rise along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast. Here, we produce a new mid- to late-Holocene RSL record from a salt marsh bordering Great Bay in southern New Jersey using basal peats. We use a multi-proxy approach (foraminifera and geochemistry) to identify the indicative meaning of the basal peats and produce sea-level index points (SLIPs) that include a vertical uncertainty for tidal range change and sediment compaction and a temporal uncertainty based on high precision Accelerator Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon dating of salt-marsh plant macrofossils. The 14 basal SLIPs range from 1211 ± 56 years BP to 4414 ± 112 years BP, which we combine with published RSL data from southern New Jersey and use with a spatiotemporal statistical model to show that RSL rose 8.6 m at an average rate of 1.7 ± 0.1 mm/yr (1σ) from 5000 years BP to present. We compare the RSL changes with an ensemble of 1D (laterally homogenous) and site-specific 3D (laterally heterogeneous) GIA models, which tend to overestimate the magnitude of RSL rise over the last 5000 years. The continued discrepancy between RSL data and GIA models highlights the importance of using a wide array of ice model and viscosity model parameters to more precisely fit site-specific RSL data along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast

    Population Monte Carlo algorithms

    We give a cross-disciplinary survey on ``population'' Monte Carlo algorithms. In these algorithms, a set of ``walkers'' or ``particles'' is used as a representation of a high-dimensional vector. The computation is carried out by a random walk and split/deletion of these objects. The algorithms are developed in various fields in physics and statistical sciences and called by lots of different terms -- ``quantum Monte Carlo'', ``transfer-matrix Monte Carlo'', ``Monte Carlo filter (particle filter)'',``sequential Monte Carlo'' and ``PERM'' etc. Here we discuss them in a coherent framework.     Entropic Tightening of Vibrated Chains

    We investigate experimentally the distribution of configurations of a ring with an elementary topological constraint, a ``figure-8'' twist. Using vibrated granular chains, which permit controlled preparation and direct observation of such a constraint, we show that configurations where one of the loops is tight and the second is large are strongly preferred. This agrees with recent predictions for equilibrium properties of topologically-constrained polymers. However, the dynamics of the tightening process weakly violate detailed balance, a signature of the nonequilibrium nature of this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Sputtered films of Er<sup>3+</sup> doped gallium sulphide glass

    Thin films of Er3+-doped gallium lanthanum sulfide (GLS) glass were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering onto fused silica and BK7 glass substrates. The films were characterized by use of SEM imaging, X-ray diffractometry, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. They are shown to be glassy, uniform in composition, and to exhibit an RMS surface roughness of &lt;8Å. The fluorescence lifetimes of the 4I11/2 to 4I13/2 and 4I13/2 to 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ were measured at each processing stage
