Charge asymmetry in W + jets production at the LHC
The charge asymmetry in W + jets production at the LHC can serve to calibrate
the presence of New Physics contributions. We study the ratio {\sigma}(W^+ + n
jets)/{\sigma}(W^- + n jets) in the Standard Model for n <= 4, paying
particular attention to the uncertainty in the prediction from higher-order
perturbative corrections and uncertainties in parton distribution functions. We
show that these uncertainties are generally of order a few percent, making the
experimental measurement of the charge asymmetry ratio a particularly useful

Crack paths under mixed mode loading
Long fatigue cracks that initially experience mixed mode displacements usually change direction in response to cyclic elastic stresses. Eventually the cracks tend to orient themselves into a pure mode I condition, but the path that they take can be complex and chaotic. In this paper, we report on recent developments in techniques for tracking the crack path as it grows and evaluating the strength of the mixed mode crack tip stress field
Ewald methods for polarizable surfaces with application to hydroxylation and hydrogen bonding on the (012) and (001) surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3
We present a clear and rigorous derivation of the Ewald-like method for
calculation of the electrostatic energy of the systems infinitely periodic in
two-dimensions and of finite size in the third dimension (slabs) which is
significantly faster than existing methods. Molecular dynamics simulations
using the transferable/polarizable model by Rustad et al. were applied to study
the surface relaxation of the nonhydroxylated, hydroxylated, and solvated
surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite). We find that our nonhydroxylated structures
and energies are in good agreement with previous LDA calculations on
alpha-alumina by Manassidis et al. [Surf. Sci. Lett. 285, L517, 1993]. Using
the results of molecular dynamics simulations of solvated interfaces, we define
end-member hydroxylated-hydrated states for the surfaces which are used in
energy minimization calculations. We find that hydration has a small effect on
the surface structure, but that hydroxylation has a significant effect. Our
calculations, both for gas-phase and solution-phase adsorption, predict a
greater amount of hydroxylation for the (012) surface than for the (001)
surface. Our simulations also indicate the presence of four-fold coordinated

Charge asymmetry ratio as a probe of quark flavour couplings of resonant particles at the LHC
We show how a precise knowledge of parton distribution functions, in
particular those of the u and d quarks, can be used to constrain a certain
class of New Physics models in which new heavy charged resonances couple to
quarks and leptons. We illustrate the method by considering a left-right
symmetric model with a W' from a SU(2)_R gauge sector produced in
quark-antiquark annihilation and decaying into a charged lepton and a heavy
Majorana neutrino. We discuss a number of quark and lepton mixing scenarios,
and simulate both signals and backgrounds in order to determine the size of the
expected charge asymmetry. We show that various quark-W' mixing scenarios can
indeed be constrained by charge asymmetry measurements at the LHC, particularly
at 14 TeV centre of mass energy.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Same-sign W pair production as a probe of double parton scattering at the LHC
We study the production of same-sign W boson pairs at the LHC in double
parton interactions. Compared with simple factorised double parton
distributions (dPDFs), we show that the recently developed dPDFs, GS09, lead to
non-trivial kinematic correlations between the W bosons. A numerical study of
the prospects for observing this process using same-sign dilepton signatures,
including same-sign WWjj, di-boson and heavy flavour backgrounds, at 14 TeV
centre-of-mass energy is then performed. It is shown that a small excess of
same-sign dilepton events from double parton scattering over a background
dominated by single scattering WZ(gamma*) production could be observed at the

Professionalism, Golf Coaching and a Master of Science Degree: A commentary
As a point of reference I congratulate Simon Jenkins on tackling the issue of professionalism in coaching. As he points out coaching is not a profession, but this does not mean that coaching would not benefit from going through a professionalization process. As things stand I find that the stimulus article unpacks some critically important issues of professionalism, broadly within the context of golf coaching. However, I am not sure enough is made of understanding what professional (golf) coaching actually is nor how the development of a professional golf coach can be facilitated by a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.). I will focus my commentary on these two issues
A deep dive into the ecology of Gamay (Botany Bay, Australia): current knowledge and future priorities for this highly modified coastal waterway
Context: Gamay is a coastal waterway of immense social, cultural and ecological value. Since European settlement, it has become a hub for industrialisation and human modification. There is growing desire for ecosystem-level management of urban waterways, but such efforts are often challenged by a lack of integrated knowledge.
Aim and methods: We systematically reviewed published literature and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), and consulted scientists to produce a review of Gamay that synthesises published knowledge of Gamay’s aquatic ecosystem to identify knowledge gaps and future research opportunities.
Key results: We found 577 published resources on Gamay, of which over 70% focused on ecology. Intertidal rocky shores were the most studied habitat, focusing on invertebrate communities. Few studies considered multiple habitats or taxa. Studies investigating cumulative human impacts, long-term trends and habitat connectivity are lacking, and the broader ecological role of artificial substrate as habitat in Gamay is poorly understood. TEK of Gamay remains a significant knowledge gap. Habitat restoration has shown promising results and could provide opportunities to improve affected habitats in the future.
Conclusion and implications: This review highlights the extensive amount of knowledge that exists for Gamay, but also identifies key gaps that need to be filled for effective management
Functionally Inert HIV-Specific Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes Do Not Play a Major Role in Chronically Infected Adults and Children
The highly sensitive quantitation of virus-specific CD8+ T cells using major histocompatibility complex–peptide tetramer assays has revealed higher levels of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in acute and chronic virus infections than were recognized previously. However, studies in lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection have shown that tetramer assays may include measurement of a substantial number of tetramer-binding cells that are functionally inert. Such phenotypically silent CTLs, which lack cytolytic function and do not produce interferon (IFN)-γ, have been hypothesized to explain the persistence of virus in the face of a quantitatively large immune response, particularly when CD4 help is impaired. In this study, we examined the role of functionally inert CTLs in chronic HIV infection. Subjects studied included children and adults (n = 42) whose viral loads ranged from <50 to >100,000 RNA copies/ml plasma. Tetramer assays were compared with three functional assays: enzyme-linked immunospot (Elispot), intracellular cytokine staining, and precursor frequency (limiting dilution assay [LDA]) cytotoxicity assays. Strong positive associations were observed between cell numbers derived by the Elispot and the tetramer assay (r = 0.90). An even stronger association between tetramer-derived numbers and intracellular cytokine staining for IFN-γ was present (r = 0.97). The majority (median 76%) of tetramer-binding cells were consistently detectable via intracellular IFN-γ cytokine staining. Furthermore, modifications to the LDA, using a low input cell number into each well, enabled LDAs to reach equivalence with the other methods of CTL enumeration. These data together show that functionally inert CTLs do not play a significant role in chronic pediatric or adult HIV infection
