Static Observers in Curved Spaces and Non-inertial Frames in Minkowski Spacetime
Static observers in curved spacetimes may interpret their proper acceleration
as the opposite of a local gravitational field (in the Newtonian sense). Based
on this interpretation and motivated by the equivalence principle, we are led
to investigate congruences of timelike curves in Minkowski spacetime whose
acceleration field coincides with the acceleration field of static observers of
curved spaces. The congruences give rise to non-inertial frames that are
examined. Specifically we find, based on the locality principle, the embedding
of simultaneity hypersurfaces adapted to the non-inertial frame in an explicit
form for arbitrary acceleration fields. We also determine, from the Einstein
equations, a covariant field equation that regulates the behavior of the proper
acceleration of static observers in curved spacetimes. It corresponds to an
exact relativistic version of the Newtonian gravitational field equation. In
the specific case in which the level surfaces of the norm of the acceleration
field of the static observers are maximally symmetric two-dimensional spaces,
the energy-momentum tensor of the source is analyzed.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

Influência das frações granulométricas sobre a fixação de zinco pelo solo
This paper was carried out in order to verify the effects of the clay, silt and sand soil fractions on zinc fixation by soils. Ten grams each of 30 samples of different soils were placed in a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask and 4 ml of solution containing 100 mg of inert Zn and 0.70 mc of radioactive 65Zn were added. After 20 days of incubation, Zn was extracted with 20 ml of 0.01 M EDTA solution made 1 M with respect to (NH4)2CO3. An aliquot of 5 ml of the extract was transferred to a test-tube and radioactivity of 65Zn in it was measured with a scintillation counter. Quantity of fixed Zn by the different soils was calculated from the data obtained and counting made on the standard solution. It was concluded that clay and silt took part of the Zn fixation by the soil, but not the sand.
The purpose of this experiment was to verify the effects of some properties of the soil as pH, and the content of soluble phosphate and organic matter on the soil capacity to fix zinc. Ten grams each of 30 samples of different soils were placed in a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask and 4 ml of solution containing 100 mg of inert zinc and 0.7 mcof radioactive 65Zn were added. After 20 days of incubation, Zn was extracted with 20 ml of 0.01 M EDTA solution made 1M respect to (NH4)2CO3. An aliquot of 5 ml of the extract was transferred to a test tub and radioactivity of 65 Zn in it was measured with a scintillation counter. Quantity of zinc fixed by the different soils was calculated from the data obtained and county made on the standard solution. It was concluded that the amount of zinc fixed by the soil was positively correlated with pH, soluble phosphate and organic matter content of the soils.
Hodge Theory on Metric Spaces
Hodge theory is a beautiful synthesis of geometry, topology, and analysis,
which has been developed in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. On the other
hand, spaces of images, which are important in the mathematical foundations of
vision and pattern recognition, do not fit this framework. This motivates us to
develop a version of Hodge theory on metric spaces with a probability measure.
We believe that this constitutes a step towards understanding the geometry of
vision.

infinite dimensional \alpha-scale homology.Comment: appendix by Anthony W. Baker, 48 pages, AMS-LaTeX. v2: final version,

Supersymmetry Without Prejudice
We begin an exploration of the physics associated with the general
CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation, the pMSSM. The 19 soft SUSY
breaking parameters in this scenario are chosen so as to satisfy all existing
experimental and theoretical constraints assuming that the WIMP is a
conventional thermal relic, ie, the lightest neutralino. We scan this parameter
space twice using both flat and log priors for the soft SUSY breaking mass
parameters and compare the results which yield similar conclusions. Detailed
constraints from both LEP and the Tevatron searches play a particularly
important role in obtaining our final model samples. We find that the pMSSM
leads to a much broader set of predictions for the properties of the SUSY
partners as well as for a number of experimental observables than those found
in any of the conventional SUSY breaking scenarios such as mSUGRA. This set of
models can easily lead to atypical expectations for SUSY signals at the LHC.Comment: 61 pages, 24 figs. Refs., figs, and text added, typos fixed; This

The geological cycle of plastics and their use as a stratigraphic indicator of the Anthropocene
The rise of plastics since the mid-20th century, both as a material element of modern life and as a growing environmental pollutant, has been widely described. Their distribution in both the terrestrial and marine realms suggests that they are a key geological indicator of the Anthropocene, as a distinctive stratal component. Most immediately evident in terrestrial deposits, they are clearly becoming widespread in marine sedimentary deposits in both shallow- and deep-water settings. They are abundant and widespread as macroscopic fragments and virtually ubiquitous as microplastic particles; these are dispersed by both physical and biological processes, not least via the food chain and the ‘faecal express’ route from surface to sea floor. Plastics are already widely dispersed in sedimentary deposits, and their amount seems likely to grow several-fold over the next few decades. They will continue to be input into the sedimentary cycle over coming millennia as temporary stores – landfill sites – are eroded. Plastics already enable fine time resolution within Anthropocene deposits via the development of their different types and via the artefacts (‘technofossils’) they are moulded into, and many of these may have long-term preservation potential when buried in strata
The Association Between Broad Antigen HLA Mismatches, Eplet HLA Mismatches and Acute Rejection After Kidney Transplantation
Epitope matching, which evaluates mismatched amino acids within antigen-antibody interaction sites (eplets), may better predict acute rejection than broad antigen matching alone. We aimed to determine the association between eplet mismatches and acute rejection in kidney transplant recipients. The association between eplet mismatches, broad antigen mismatches and acute rejection was assessed using adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression. Model discrimination for acute rejection was evaluated using the area under receiver operating characteristic curves.Of the 3,499 kidney transplant recipients from 2006 to 2011, the average (SD) number of broad antigen and eplet mismatches were 3.4 (1.7) and 22.8 (12.2), respectively. Compared with 0 to 2 eplet mismatches, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for acute rejection among those with 20 or greater eplet mismatches was 2.16 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33-3.52; P = 0.001). The adjusted area under the curve for broad antigen mismatches was 0.58 (95% CI, 0.56-0.61), similar to that for eplet mismatches (HR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.56-0.61; P = 0.365). In recipients who were considered as low immunological risk (0-2 broad antigen HLA-ABDR mismatch), those with 20 or greater eplet mismatches experienced an increased risk of rejection compared to those with less than 20 mismatches (adjusted HR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.11-3.08; P = 0.019).Increasing number of eplet mismatches is associated with acute rejection in kidney transplant recipients. Consideration of eplet HLA mismatches may improve risk stratification for acute rejection in a selected group of kidney transplant candidates.Hung Thanh Do Nguyen, Germaine Wong, Jeremy R. Helicity Analysis of Semileptonic Hyperon Decays Including Lepton Mass Effects
Using the helicity method we derive complete formulas for the joint angular
decay distributions occurring in semileptonic hyperon decays including lepton
mass and polarization effects. Compared to the traditional covariant
calculation the helicity method allows one to organize the calculation of the
angular decay distributions in a very compact and efficient way. In the
helicity method the angular analysis is of cascade type, i.e. each decay in the
decay chain is analyzed in the respective rest system of that particle. Such an
approach is ideally suited as input for a Monte Carlo event generation program.
As a specific example we take the decay () followed by the nonleptonic decay for which we show a few examples of decay distributions which are
generated from a Monte Carlo program based on the formulas presented in this
paper. All the results of this paper are also applicable to the semileptonic
and nonleptonic decays of ground state charm and bottom baryons, and to the
decays of the top quark.Comment: Published version. 40 pages, 11 figures included in the text. Typos

Star Formation and Dynamics in the Galactic Centre
The centre of our Galaxy is one of the most studied and yet enigmatic places
in the Universe. At a distance of about 8 kpc from our Sun, the Galactic centre
(GC) is the ideal environment to study the extreme processes that take place in
the vicinity of a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Despite the hostile
environment, several tens of early-type stars populate the central parsec of
our Galaxy. A fraction of them lie in a thin ring with mild eccentricity and
inner radius ~0.04 pc, while the S-stars, i.e. the ~30 stars closest to the
SMBH (<0.04 pc), have randomly oriented and highly eccentric orbits. The
formation of such early-type stars has been a puzzle for a long time: molecular
clouds should be tidally disrupted by the SMBH before they can fragment into
stars. We review the main scenarios proposed to explain the formation and the
dynamical evolution of the early-type stars in the GC. In particular, we
discuss the most popular in situ scenarios (accretion disc fragmentation and
molecular cloud disruption) and migration scenarios (star cluster inspiral and
Hills mechanism). We focus on the most pressing challenges that must be faced
to shed light on the process of star formation in the vicinity of a SMBH.Comment: 68 pages, 35 figures; invited review chapter, to be published in
