Quasiparticle contribution to heat carriers relaxation time in DyBaCuO from heat diffusivity measurements
It is shown that the controversy on phonons or electrons being the most
influenced heat carriers below the critical temperature of high-T
superconductors can be resolved. Electrical and thermal properties of the same
DyBaCuO monodomain have been measured for two highly different
oxygenation levels. While the oxygenated sample DyBaCuO has very
good superconducting properties ( K), the DyBaCuO
sample exhibits an insulator behavior. A careful comparison between
measurements of the {\bf thermal diffusivity} of both samples allows us to
extract the electronic contribution. This contribution to the relaxation time
of heat carriers is shown to be large below and more sensitive to the
superconducting state than the phonon contribution.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
A two-species model of a two-dimensional sandpile surface: a case of asymptotic roughening
We present and analyze a model of an evolving sandpile surface in (2 + 1)
dimensions where the dynamics of mobile grains ({\rho}(x, t)) and immobile
clusters (h(x, t)) are coupled. Our coupling models the situation where the
sandpile is flat on average, so that there is no bias due to gravity. We find
anomalous scaling: the expected logarithmic smoothing at short length and time
scales gives way to roughening in the asymptotic limit, where novel and
non-trivial exponents are found.Comment: 7 Pages, 6 Figures; Granular Matter, 2012 (Online
BULK NON-EQUILIBRIUM SUPERCONDUCTOR PROBED BY BALLISTIC PHONONS
A domain of non-equilibrium quasiparticles is created in bulk tin by irradiation with either a light pulse or a heat pulse. A probe beam of high frequency phonons is used to sense the local gap disturbance
The interaction of thermal phonons with conduction electrons in InSb. Application to heat-pulse spectroscopy
High frequency ballistic phonons were radiated by the heat pulse method (To 2 kF), selective coupling of the longitudinal modes and screening effects. Then, we report original extensive measurements of phonon absorption as a function of the electron concentration in the semiconductor. The Fermi sphere acts as a high-pass filter, which enables phonon spectroscopy with no adjustable parameters. As a result, the frequency distribution of a heat pulse could be determined in a detailed fashion.
FRICTIONLESS HEAT MOTION IN METALS AT LOW TEMPERATURES
Conservation of total momentum in electron-phonon collisions, in addition to scarcity of the resistive collisions is a characteristic feature of highly pure metals at low temperatures. This fact should yield instead of the usual diffusion process, a finite velocity of heat transport for which a fundamental parameter is the electron energetic lifetime. This paper discusses the requirements for such a ballistic mixed mode (electrons + phonons) to exist, and reports recent heat pulse experiments performed on metallic single crystals, in both the normal and the superconducting state
