Water loss in horticultural products. Modelling, data analysis and theoretical considerations
The water loss of individual fruit (melon, plum and mandarin) was analysed using the traditional diffusion based approach and a kinetic approach. Applying simple non linear regression, both approaches are the same, resulting in a quite acceptable analysis. However, by applying mixed effects non linear regression analysis, explicitly including the variation over the individuals, the kinetic approach was found to reflect the processes occurring during mass loss better than the diffusion approach. All the variation between the individuals in a batch could be attributed to the initial mass or size of the individuals. The fraction of the fruit mass that is available for transpiration is the key item in the water loss process, rather than the skin resistance and fruit area. Programmed assembly of polymer-DNA conjugate nanoparticles with optical readout and sequence-specific activation of biorecognition
Soft micellar nanoparticles can be prepared from DNA conjugates designed to assemble via base pairing
such that strands containing a polymer corona and a cholesterol tail generate controlled supramolecular
architecture. Functionalization of one DNA conjugate strand with a biorecognition ligand results in
shielding of the ligand when in the micelle, while encoding of the DNA sequences with overhangs allows
supramolecular unpacking by addition of a complementary strand and sequence-specific unshielding of
the ligand. The molecular assembly/disassembly and ‘on–off’ switch of the recognition signal is
visualized by FRET pair signalling, PAGE and a facile turbidimetric binding assay, allowing direct and
amplified readout of nucleic acid sequence recognition
Superstrings with Intrinsic Torsion
We systematically analyse the necessary and sufficient conditions for the
preservation of supersymmetry for bosonic geometries of the form R^{1,9-d}
\times M_d, in the common NS-NS sector of type II string theory and also type
I/heterotic string theory. The results are phrased in terms of the intrinsic
torsion of G-structures and provide a comprehensive classification of static
supersymmetric backgrounds in these theories. Generalised calibrations
naturally appear since the geometries always admit NS or type I/heterotic
fivebranes wrapping calibrated cycles. Some new solutions are presented. In
particular we find d=6 examples with a fibred structure which preserve N=1,2,3

The MIK2/SCOOP Signaling System Contributes to Arabidopsis Resistance Against Herbivory by Modulating Jasmonate and Indole Glucosinolate Biosynthesis.
Initiation of plant immune signaling requires recognition of conserved molecular patterns from microbes and herbivores by plasma membrane-localized pattern recognition receptors. Additionally, plants produce and secrete numerous small peptide hormones, termed phytocytokines, which act as secondary danger signals to modulate immunity. In Arabidopsis, the Brassicae-specific SERINE RICH ENDOGENOUS PEPTIDE (SCOOP) family consists of 14 members that are perceived by the leucine-rich repeat receptor kinase MALE DISCOVERER 1-INTERACTING RECEPTOR LIKE KINASE 2 (MIK2). Recognition of SCOOP peptides elicits generic early signaling responses but knowledge on how and if SCOOPs modulate specific downstream immune defenses is limited. We report here that depletion of MIK2 or the single PROSCOOP12 precursor results in decreased Arabidopsis resistance against the generalist herbivore Spodoptera littoralis but not the specialist Pieris brassicae. Increased performance of S. littoralis on mik2-1 and proscoop12 is accompanied by a diminished accumulation of jasmonic acid, jasmonate-isoleucine and indolic glucosinolates. Additionally, we show transcriptional activation of the PROSCOOP gene family in response to insect herbivory. Our data therefore indicate that perception of endogenous SCOOP peptides by MIK2 modulates the jasmonate pathway and thereby contributes to enhanced defense against a generalist herbivore
Accuracy and Reliability of Pelvimetry Measures Obtained by Manual or Automatic Labeling of Three-Dimensional Pelvic Models.
(1) Background: The morphology of the pelvic cavity is important for decision-making in obstetrics. This study aimed to estimate the accuracy and reliability of pelvimetry measures obtained when radiologists manually label anatomical landmarks on three-dimensional (3D) pelvic models. A second objective was to design an automatic labeling method. (2) Methods: Three operators segmented 10 computed tomography scans each. Three radiologists then labeled 12 anatomical landmarks on the pelvic models, which allowed for the calculation of 15 pelvimetry measures. Additionally, an automatic labeling method was developed based on a reference pelvic model, including reference anatomical landmarks, matching the individual pelvic models. (3) Results: Heterogeneity among landmarks in radiologists' labeling accuracy was observed, with some landmarks being rarely mislabeled by more than 4 mm and others being frequently mislabeled by 10 mm or more. The propagation to the pelvimetry measures was limited; only one out of the 15 measures reported a median error above 5 mm or 5°, and all measures showed moderate to excellent inter-radiologist reliability. The automatic method outperformed manual labeling. (4) Conclusions: This study confirmed the suitability of pelvimetry measures based on manual labeling of 3D pelvic models. Automatic labeling offers promising perspectives to decrease the demand on radiologists, standardize the labeling, and describe the pelvic cavity in more detail
Zero Temperature Limit of Holographic Superconductors
We consider holographic superconductors whose bulk description consists of
gravity minimally coupled to a Maxwell field and charged scalar field with
general potential. We give an analytic argument that there is no "hard gap":
the real part of the conductivity at low frequency remains nonzero (although
typically exponentially small) even at zero temperature. We also numerically
construct the gravitational dual of the ground state of some holographic
superconductors. Depending on the charge and dimension of the condensate, the
infrared theory can have emergent conformal or just Poincare symmetry. In all
cases studied, the area of the horizon of the dual black hole goes to zero in
the extremal limit, consistent with a nondegenerate ground state.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure
Attention to Wi-Fi Diversity: Resource Management in WLANs with Heterogeneous APs
Many home networks integrate a small number (typically 2-4) of Wi-Fi Access Points (APs), with heterogeneous characteristics: different 802.11 variants, capabilities and security schemes. This paper proposes the consideration of these specific characteristics in order to improve the management of network resources. Three use cases are presented in order to showcase the potential benefits. By the use of a user-space AP, which works in coordination with a controller, the network is able to assign each connected station to the AP that best fits with its characteristics. The system also manages security, avoiding the need of adding specific elements for authentication, encryption or decryption. Extensions are proposed to an existing protocol that defines the communication between the AP and the controller, in order to communicate and store the specific characteristics of each AP and end device. This includes new association and handoff schemes that do not introduce any additional delay. The system has been implemented in a real environment, and a battery of tests has been run using three hardware platforms of different characteristics. The results show that handoffs between bands are possible, and estimate the processing delays, the Round-Trip Time and the handoff delay, which is small enough in order not to produce any significant disruption to the user (10-50 ms). Finally, the scenarios of interest have been replicated in a simulation environment, showing that significant benefits can be achieved if the specific characteristics of each AP and station are considered
