Séparateur d'isotopes à double déflexion magnétique pour la production d'isotopes de très haute pureté

The electromagnetic separator of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of Orsay is made up of a 60° sector homogeneous magnetic field analyser followed by a semi-circular inhomogeneous field analyser of the Svartholm-Siegbahn type. The enrichment factors reached are from ten to a hundred times higher than those obtained with the other types of separators while the ion beam intensity remains in the neighbourhood of 1 milliampere. A description of the instrument is given as well as the first results obtained in the séparation of the isotopes of a few éléments : Cr, Sr, Yb, Hg, U, etc...Le séparateur électromagnétique du Laboratoire de Physique Nucléaire d'Orsay est constitué par un analyseur magnétique à secteur de 60° en champ homogène suivi d'un analyseur semi-circulaire à champ inhomogène du type Svartholm-Siegbahn. Les coefficients d'enrichissement atteints sont de 10 à 100 fois plus élevés que ceux obtenus avec les autres types de séparateurs alors que l'intensité des courants ioniques utiles reste voisine d'un milliampère. On donne une description de l'appareil ainsi que les premiers résultats obtenus lors de la séparation des isotopes de quelques éléments : Cr, Sr, Yb, Hg, U, etc..

Mercury isotopes of mass between 197 and 190 have been separated by electromagnetic deflection.
