    Does Pig Density Matter for the Choice of Control Strategies in Classical Swine Fever Epidemic?

    This paper examines the importance of pig population density in the area of an outbreak of CSF for the spread of the disease and the choice of control measures. A sector-level market and trade model and a spatial, stochastic, dynamic epidemiological simulation model for the Netherlands were used. Outbreaks in sparsely and densely populated areas were compared under four different control strategies and with two alternative trade assumptions. Results indicate that the control strategy required by current EU legislation is enough to eradicate an epidemic starting in an area with sparse pig population. By contrast, additional control measures are necessary if the outbreak begins in an area with high pig population density. The economic consequences of using preventive slaughter rather than emergency vaccination as an additional control measure depend strongly on the reactions of trading partners.     Multidimensional relativistic MHD simulations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae: dynamics and emission

    Pulsar Wind Nebulae, and the Crab nebula in particular, are the best cosmic laboratories to investigate the dynamics of magnetized relativistic outflows and particle acceleration up to PeV energies. Multidimensional MHD modeling by means of numerical simulations has been very successful at reproducing, to the very finest details, the innermost structure of these synchrotron emitting nebulae, as observed in the X-rays. Therefore, the comparison between the simulated source and observations can be used as a powerful diagnostic tool to probe the physical conditions in pulsar winds, like their composition, magnetization, and degree of anisotropy. However, in spite of the wealth of observations and of the accuracy of current MHD models, the precise mechanisms for magnetic field dissipation and for the acceleration of the non-thermal emitting particles are mysteries still puzzling theorists to date. Here we review the methodologies of the computational approach to the modeling of Pulsar Wind Nebulae, discussing the most relevant results and the recent progresses achieved in this fascinating field of high-energy astrophysics.Comment: 29 pages review, preliminary version.     We provide soundness and completeness results for the extension of muCRL with time put forward by Groote. The specification language muCRL has been designed especially to deal with data in a process algebraic context. Using the features for data, only a minor extension of the language was needed to obtain a very expressive variant of time. The main tool to establish the completeness result is a mapping of timed to untimed muCRL and employing the completeness results obtained for untimed muCRL

    Multisensory interactions are observed in species from single-cell organisms to humans. Important early work was primarily carried out in the cat superior colliculus and a set of critical parameters for their occurrence were defined. Primary among these were temporal synchrony and spatial alignment of bisensory inputs. Here, we assessed whether spatial alignment was also a critical parameter for the temporally earliest multisensory interactions that are observed in lower-level sensory cortices of the human. While multisensory interactions in humans have been shown behaviorally for spatially disparate stimuli (e.g. the ventriloquist effect), it is not clear if such effects are due to early sensory level integration or later perceptual level processing. In the present study, we used psychophysical and electrophysiological indices to show that auditory-somatosensory interactions in humans occur via the same early sensory mechanism both when stimuli are in and out of spatial register. Subjects more rapidly detected multisensory than unisensory events. At just 50 ms post-stimulus, neural responses to the multisensory 'whole' were greater than the summed responses from the constituent unisensory 'parts'. For all spatial configurations, this effect followed from a modulation of the strength of brain responses, rather than the activation of regions specifically responsive to multisensory pairs. Using the local auto-regressive average source estimation, we localized the initial auditory-somatosensory interactions to auditory association areas contralateral to the side of somatosensory stimulation.     Quality of life and costs of Filgrastim® (G-CSF) treatment in patients with persistent chronic rhinosinusitis

    This is the first report of the double blind randomized clinical trial, in which we investigated the influence of Filgrastim(r) on the quality of life and treatment costs of chronic sinusitis patients who did not respond to regular treatments. The quality of life of 56 patients was assessed 5 times during the 24-week trial with the EuroQol, the SF-36 and the McGill Pain questionnaire. We further controlled for "responsiveness", based on clinical impression. Direct medical and indirect non-medical costs per patient during the trial were analyzed, based on data from clinical record forms and the hospital information system. We further compared the direct medical costs to the costs of regular treatment. The quality of life scores were all below population norm scores. Quality of life scores of the Filgrastim(r) group suggested a better quality of life than the placebo group, although none of the differences were statistically significant. There were indications that controlling for responsiveness increased the power of the design. The difference in costs between the trial groups were driven by the Filgrastim(r) costs (Euro 4899). When Filgrastim(r) costs were neglected, no difference in costs remained. Except for Filgrastim(r), total direct costs summed up to Euro 2712 and the indirect costs to Euro 582. Total direct costs of a 24-week regular treatment were three times lower than the costs of the trial treatment. While significantly increasing treatment costs, Filgrastim(r) administration does not lead to a better quality of life of chronic sinusitis patients, although there were
