    Structural characterization of self-assembled and langmuir-blodgett films at ambient and elevated temperatures

    Structural studies of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and self-assembled monolayers have been carried out at ambient and elevated temperatures. Spectroscopic results indicate that a high degree of orientation exists at ambient temperature which is destroyed at temperatures in excess of 150 degrees C. In the intermediate temperature range, studies show that some LB films reversibly disorder, maintaining some degree of "memory" of their initial oriented state. This turns out to be especially true for LB films of preformed polymers. Preliminary evidence suggests that flexible backbone spacer groups play a significant role in this enhanced thermal stability.In addition, recent work has focussed on the study of short chain organic molecules adsorbed on gold supported on mica by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and FTIR spectroscopy. Progress in this area will be updated and an assessment of the future uses of STM for studying organic molecules will be given

    Nous avons obtenu et analysé les spectres Raman de polymères en films minces et de la région interfaciale entre des films de polymères lamellaires, en couplant le faisceau laser avec un guide d'onde optique par l'intermédaire d'un prisme. Des informations sur les orientations et la répartition des molécules sont obtenues en modifiant les modes et la polarisation du champ électromagnétique incident. Nous présentons les résultats concernant différents films et leurs interactions interfaciales.By coupling laser light with a prism into an optical waveguide, we have observed and analyzed Raman spectra of thin polymer films, and of the interfacial region between laminate polymer films. Both orientational and spatial informations are obtained by optical fields for different modes and polarizations. Results on various films and their interfacial interactions will be presented
